    Where i’m from, the one that means “put the subject aside” here, indicates different subjects. If i spoke of two women named “Mary”, when talking about one of them, my hands would be on one side and when talking about the other, my hands go to the other side. Like physically placing the subject!

    most of these I consider universal, or at least I've seen across many european and american cultures. the exceptions were: modesty, don't know, だめ, なるほど, and money. but each culture seems to have a sign for money and don't know, they simply are different.
    let me know if I'm overgeneralizing!
    great video!

      I shake my hand in a I don't know gestures with index finger up to imply something like no I don't want or stop that or stop the rude behavior. But yeah the humble gestures just means waving hello or goodbye in a casual way, or waving at babies/small children. But the rest are basically the same with slight variations. Also, back in the day the O hand sign could mean coins but it depends a lot how you gesture because it can also be offensive.

    It’s not even just generally obscene like flipping someone off it’s specific and it signifies the exact intention of “ I’m going to take this right here and do exactly this with it” 😂😂

    I seriously dislike the dame gesture ( possibly because of the unfriendliness or the absurdity of the situations in which it is used... If you are new to Japan, well... basically there is nothing that you can do freely, so almost everything is dame!) the more so because is erroneously translated as "No!", while it should be more properly referred to as "Please stop!" or "Please don`t!". If someone comes up to you and screams "No!!!!" at you, what do you make of it? "No... what?". It doesn`t make any immediate sense. BTW, literally it means "It`s no good"

    the first gesture "calm down" is like ronaldo calm down celebration when he scored a goal. so i think that gesture is common in another country... maybe....

  • @boahkeinbockmehr
    @boahkeinbockmehr 5 лет назад +2

    Omg! If you do that money gesture in germany and someone looks into it, you are rightfully permitted to give them 10 hits on their upper arm. If they however manage to put their index finger through the hole and pull it back out before you can catch them, they are entitled to hitting your upper arm 10 times instead. Only rule is that the sign may not be held on eye level. I just imagine an unaware german going through tokio and randomly sticking their finger into people's money gesture and beating them up, wondering why japanese are so bad at the game.

      Hi shin ichi,
      Thank you for posting.
      That's an interesting question. I think "shōnen" or "shōjo" is used for a person under 20 years old while "seinen" is used for 20+ to around 35. And to be exact, "seinen" is used for both genders, we usually use it for a man though. Please note that "josei" means a woman/women and "dansei" means a man/men.
      Keep studying with JapanesePod101.com
