Your understanding of Josef Stalin is exactly the image represented by America. He was very humble and brilliant.
So far as Mikhail Gorbachev is concerned he happened to be a great loser of modern history who acted on behalf of America who broke the Soviet into fragments.
Everybody, I request u all to ho through some true sources which represent the actual history of Stalin, Lenin, and soviet.
Are you out of your damn mind? I'm also a student of history. Stalin was a mass-murdering maniac. He even sent petty criminals to the Gulags, where they were worked to death. He destroyed freedom of press and expression, and curbed the human rights of the general public. He banned all public displays of religion and persecuted various religious and ethnic minorities. Khrushchev tried to reform the country, but Brezhnev reversed it back again. It was only after Gorbachev came to power that free and fair democratic elections, freedom of press, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and opening of the economy happened.
Gorbachev was ultimately trying to do good but was unfortunately unlucky that he couldn't keep the Union together, since the great deal of liberties that he gave to his people was eventually used against him to remove him off power. He was also the only leader of Soviet Union to have a law degree, which means that his understanding of politics and law was far superior to that of previous leaders. Stalin on the other hand was not very well educated and didn't even have a college degree. He was rebellious and a really moody person as described by those closest to him. And don't forget what he did during the Great Purge from 1936 to 1938. At least 7 lakh people were killed directly due to his shitty policies during this time and he signed those documents himself.

I listened to this 27 mins discussion, I found it absolutely misleading. Dear, I'm studying about Soviet for last 11 years, and the things u mentioned about its cruelty, poverty, liberty is totally immature way of studying the republic and its disintegration. What role America played in making Gorbachev, fragmenting Soviet and portraying its leaders as nasty and cruel, you seem to be total unaware of that.
Hence this small discussion was misleading. It's sad that people who prepare for civil exams are consuming such a biased and immature information.
Yeah well Stalin and Brezhnev weren't nasty then.... millions of people sent to concentration camps because they thought differently. All the espionages they did around the world and in India, it was supposed to happen. Even if the Americans sponsored it thank god, it helped us move on from this nehruvian socialism to a liberal and free market oriented economy, there would have been a civil strife 100/% if we would have been dependent on USSR, that hiding Chernobyl incident wasn't helpful either.
