Oh God! How I wish I could have done that with my grandparents and great grandparents James. The only one of my great grandparents who was alive when I was born was my maternal great grandfather. I've been doing this since I was 8 y/o and wanted to so many times but was discouraged or told I couldn't because it wasn't any of my business. The few times I got to talk to them about their younger years I didnt record the conversation because if I had they'd "clam up", but some of the stories I heard, wow! My grandfather never knew his father but some of the names he heard were men his mother was married to, he told me about when he was hit by a car and they thought he was dead and he was taken to the morgue but woke up hours later hearing the music from the car's horn, etc. My grandmother always would talk about her horse and buggy and the 2 horses she had and the church she went to. Alot of times I would end up wishing I had a recorder with me or I had taken notes. Ohh, to have had the foresight to just record the conversations anyway, the ones that would start with "Grandma I know you've never worn 3 inch heels before!" or "Granddaddy what IS that(referring to something I had just heard on TV.)?!??!!"
