Damn near everyone was yacking by the end of it but gave a lot of insight about what our seniors go through! Makes me enjoy my food & drink a lot more! Lol

This is literally what they give elderly people in old folks homes who have swallowing issues. They also think it's disgusting. I have had an old man say "I'd rather choke then drink that."

Most of the patients had family choose for them and if they didn't have family they had a court appointed power of attorney. All we can do is hope the people making the choice have the patients best interests at heart. Most times that wasn't the case and it was more about the individual making the decision and how they felt in the situation. It is a very frustrating career.

Worked in a nursing home kitchen. We thickened every possible thing for residents with thickened needs. Nectar thick, honey thick, pudding thick. The worst was when someone would wanted pudding thick coffee or tea.
Here's an idea for u guys that me and my niece did over the weekend... make a list of at least 20 random foods and condiments that don't go together, milk, ketchup, a1 steak sauce, jello, apple sauce, banana slices, hotdogs etc... # each of them, then take a 20 sided dice and roll twice, the 2 u roll u put together and gotta eat it... just so u know milk with ketchup or milk with salsa is disgusting! And anything with a1 steak sauce is disgusting

I have to drink these gross drinks to live. I have an inflammatory disease that left one of my vocal chords paralyzed(yup vocal chords do more than help you talk). So these vids are kinda hard for me to watch 😣I hate this stuff too..but I have to live. My son will start using this too..he is only 19 and was just diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. Some of us have to stomach this crap daily😵

There is a whole division in diatetics dedicated to making the right consistency meals for the right ailments and needs of the patients. It is actually fascinating. Because I totally understand being repulsed by texture, I'm very sensitive to textures with my food, but I genuinely do not understand how the texture has changed the flavor of any of these. Thick milk? Sure, disgusting. Vile, just from a mental standpoint, but some of the others? I don't get it.
Thick it doesn’t really have a taste, no. Had to try it in my course and water wasn’t that bad. But then again, even in work I would never give my residents THAT thick as what they are doing, nor would I give them thickened milk.

The therapist wanted to put me on thick it. I told him no because I knew what the residents went threw. My uncle was also on it. that stuff is gross. My doctors said to tuck my chin when I swallow. You boys are brave trying it.
For those of you who drink thickened liquids or have a loved one on a thickened liquid diet, ask the speech therapist about the Frazier Free Water Protocol and make sure the recommendation was made after a modified barium swallow study or a fiber optic endoscopic swallow study! No one can tell if drinks are going down wrong just by looking at someone while they swallow. Thickened liquids are incredibly over recommended and often inappropriate.

They're graded on a scale including thin, slightly thick, mildly thick, moderately thick, and extremely thick. They are also associated with higher risks of dehydration and decreased quality of life (most people are not big fans, as evidenced in this video, and they don't really quench thirst).
