I came to Australia on this lovely ship as a ten pound Pom leaving Southampton for Sydney on 4 August 1970. The dockers in Southampton were on strike so we had to load our own luggage. She sailed via Messina and then Naples and Genoa where she filled up with Italian migrants. Then out of the Mediteranean to the Canary Islands where the crew went on strike for 3 days and all passengers were paid ten pounds per day to go ashore to eat - this was three times the fare we had paid as assisted passage migrants. I shared a 4 berth second class cabin with an Irish Family. I saw her again in Sydney in the 90's after her refit and she looked beautiful. So sad when she sank of the East coast of Africa. Lovely memories that changed my life. Frank Smith

I also had the priviledge of sailing on this ship from England to Australia (1969) memory great memories, I was 11years old. I traveled half away round the world got to see places I would prob have never seen I hold a special place in my heart for this ship and I agree with repenio06 I think the best Ship of the 20th Century, not only did she survive the hijack and 2 fires before they finally laid her to rest.
in Australia we have a saying for our soldiers "Lest we Forget"

I was 7 when we sailed out of Southhampton in early July 1969 & arrived in Sydney in Aug. Wonderful memories of the time on board.... we were allowed in the control room which was just outside our cabin door. Sneaking into first class, jamming the lifts so we could be rescued.. going on deck in stormy weather when no one was allowed outside... school was only a couple of hours or so per day.. yes what a great time we had.. & what a gracious ship ... Fond memories

sailed on the Achille Lauro to Australia in July 1971 . via Naples,Genoa,Malta, Tenerife and Cape Town. She was a stunning looking ship from all angles. I was a £10 pom at the time and still have copies of the ships newsletters . such a sad end to a fine ship although she would have ended up in a chinese or indian scrapyard.

I arrived in Australia in September 1970 age 8 with my family on the Achille Lauro. I remember loving the weekly lifeboat practice and the ship song as we left each port. We have great photos of crossing the equator (and all the adults making a BIG mess of the pool!

I travelled as a kid from England to New Zealand in Oct 1971. 10th Birthday in Spain, snuck into R16 Movies, learnt yoga, experienced apartheid in South Africa :( explored the whole ship, though didn't like the storm, broken stabilisers and huge waves. Actually I think I learnt more about life in those months than any other time. Love... friendship and wanderlust.

I was 10 when I left my home at Westend Southampton and boarded the Achille Lauro on the 5th November 1968, arriving Melbourne 12th December. It was the experiences of a landlubber as sea for five glorious weeks, that developed my love of the sea, and I guess resulted in my 40 odd years service in both Merchant and Navy. I well remember sitting in the Staff Mess of the Spirit of Tasmania 1994, and hearing the news reports of the demise of this grand old lady. VAL Achille Lauro.

I, along with my wife and two sons, disembarked from the Achille Lauro in Fremantle in December 1969 for a visit to the port town and Perth. Our voyage ended, on Christmas Eve 1969 at Sydney. We all hold fond memories of the ship and were saddened when it sank.

My father was on your ship too, got on at Genoa, Italy and got off in Sydney, Christmas Eve, 1969. Not sure if he visited Perth as he was a migrant with no money and couldn't speak English but I know he had an amazing experience on the ship, seeings things and places he would never have seen otherwise. Sadly he passed away 13 years ago at age 67, but he would loved to be able to see footage of "his" ship.

It's a late response, but I was on that ship at that time. I had earlier sailed out of Sydney on the Achille Lauro in very early January 1969. I had been away from Australia for a year, eventually returning also on the Achille of that December 1969 voyage (I had been hoping it could have been the Angelina Lauro, just for some difference).
Coming across the Indian Ocean from Cape Town, I could smell the scent of gum leaves miles out to sea, before arriving at Fremantle. It must have been a hot summer that year, to have released the gases from the trees.

I was possibly on at the same time. 1970 Melbourne to Spain via New Zealand I was 10, The 4 things I remember most was the song la nave blu by the band at the end of each night, A emergency drill one morning in the middle of nowhere with huge winds and very rough seas, Going up el Rio de la plata in South America that just looked like the sea but with brown water and of course crossing the equator with the fun and games around the pool.

I appreciate seeing footage of the ship as moving images seem to give a greater sense of scale. The Willem Ruys/Achille Laura was not in the same size and tonnage range as the Cunard Queens for example but when you see the ship up close you realize this was still a huge vessel--and one of the most interesting of ships to look at. Also some photos give a sense of scale if there's something with which to compare a ship but I think it's best achieved with movies/video.

The Achille Lauro was built in the Netherlands as Willem Ruys (c. 1939) A very fine ship no doubt about that but in no way comparable to the greatest pre-war liners such as Normandie/Queen Mary/Europa/Bremen/Rex etc. - these were the greatest ships of the 20thc and in the case of the Normandie and Queen Mary will probably never be equalled.
