That writing piece really hit home. For 10 years I talked about writing a book and then I finally wrote a book. It was the hardest thing I ever did and when I was done I didn’t feel accomplishment I felt relief. I know now I don’t want to be a writer, I want to be a teacher who uses writing as one of his tools. Thanks Mark sharing this important information!

    • @eh4519
      @eh4519 3 года назад +10

Wow, good on you for writing that book and having the emotional maturity to come to that conclusion.
I feel in a similar boat. Growing up I got a lot of praise for my writing, particularly creative writing. It became a big part of my identity. As a teenager I used to go to sleep telling myself that if I didn't write a world-changing book my life would have been a total failure. WOW, that's a lot of pressure to put on yourself. The fact is though, I never wrote in my spare time for enjoyment- I just couldn't bring myself to. A think this was partly due to extreme amounts of pressure, and also partly due to the fact that I just didn't find it enjoyable. I became a nurse so that I would be able to have a stable job and pursue writing on the side. I have been a nurse for almost a decade and still haven't written one substantial piece of creative writing. I do know that I do have a natural knack for words and knowing how to put them together to sound snappy, but I'm not sure that's enough. The past few years, but in particular very recently I have been grappling with the fact that it's likely that I will never be a writer- in part because all evidence would suggest it's simply something I don't actually want to do. It's been incredibly painful, largely because of the letting go of the lifelong identity/delusion I had created. It automatically changes a lot of my world view, and even though I actually think it makes it better, it's still painful. I know that I have to go through this because I can't live until I'm 50 thinking this way (I'm 32) and putting my life on hold and creating an opportunity cost that stops me from pursuing other more realistic and pleasurable goals.
Also, I found an old copy of a story that I wrote when I was 14 and was massively praised for by my teachers. You know what? It wasn't that good. Even for a kid. Perhaps I could have pursued writing further and got better, but it was a wake-up call that made me realise how the identity of 'writer' I had stamped myself with at a young age was not based in reality.

I feel like social media has made us hallow, approval seeking consumers. We are shown snapshots of perfectly curated fake lives we can never achieve because they don’t exist.
I personally have always hated the feeling things like Instagram gave me. I focus on my own little world, being better than me yesterday and spending time with people who I care about. I don’t want anything most of the time I spend thinking about how lucky I am to be safe in my home, not worrying about my next meal etc.
It really hurts to see people chasing money and material things… I wish I could wake them up to the fact you mentioned.

I maintain the belief that identity issues are a major cause of depression. Such as if a parent dies I feel the grief comes not only from missing them but from missing who you were when they were alive. And, as you say, people hang onto bad relationships because it's their identity, also a mid life crisis is all about questioning who you are.
Identity is such an important thing so no wonder we do things we hate in search of it, really interesting video. Thanks.

We can also end up hating the things we love. By which I mean that we can do them for the right reasons but hate them for the wrong reasons. Its possible, for example, to love writing. And end up hating it because we have unreasonable expectations . We might expect it to be easier than it is, which causes self-loathing when it turns out less than perfect. Or we dream about overnight success - which never comes. The core motivation might be the right one. But other erroneous motivations get mixed up with it.

I love being a music producer/musician: thinking of melodies in my mind, arranging the chords, figuring out which kick drum sounds good with the track, mixing the instruments, etc. Music is my favorite form of expression. What I DID dislike in my life (I say "dislike" as a substitute for "hate") was being in the military. I always say to people, "Joining the Air Force was one of the best decisions I've made in my life. Getting out of the Air Force was, also, one of the best decisions I've made in my life." It was something I initially did out of financial necessity, and while I'll always be grateful for the close friends, "regular-tier" friends, acquaintances, and experiences that the military brought me, I feel so much better about life since I've separated.
Mark, thanks for being my unofficial therapist for several years now, and thanks for the video!

The concept of liking the idea of something instead of the thing itself even extends to romantic relationships. A lot of people are in a relationship because they like the idea of being in one rather than like the person they're in a relationship with. And before you know it, you're too afraid to be single, because you've completely forgotten your identity, as in who "you" are without a partner.

All of this is so true, I just realized it myself recently. I think it’s hard to let go, too, bc you don’t want to give up on something that is hard before you were able to get better (too early). For example, I wanted to be a teacher, which is known to be hard in the beginning, but then I was able to determine that it felt harder to me than it normally would for new teachers bc I didn’t really want to do it. Stressful aspects of the job are more stressful if you’re in it for the wrong reasons. Great video, you touched on some feelings that I definitely felt when I was in that position.

This happened to me with mountain biking! I love hiking, so I thought I would love taking a bike over the same kinds of trails...but after getting a mountain bike, I now take it on paved trails more often than not.
I thought I would love the adrenaline rush + being out in nature. But in practice, I get annoyed with having to constantly pay attention to the technical things, my brain having to make a million small decisions a minute, having to lean one way, then the next, heart pounding out of my chest as I go downhill with a drop-off to the river next to me, trying to avoid falling... I realized I really liked the idea of mountain biking through the woods, but in practice I like hiking much better.
With hiking, you can look at nature but let your mind wander. With mountain biking, I'm sure you can eventually get to that point, but it takes a LOT of technical skill and willingness to fall a lot and potentially get injured first.

I think, I've tried going into a variety of things and have come out mostly feeling 'I GUESS i like it'. And although on one hand I agree that maybe it's not important to be anything, I also sometimes wonder if I'll ever feel connected to an interest at all.
I think, life is like that for me currently. Which is ok. I think, that maybe it's not so bad to not know and I'm just sort of embracing it as this perpetual hunt for something fun to do.

    This reminds me Alan Watts.
But the thing about this idea is if you're not careful about it, you'll end up homeless!
Because after adopting this idea you develop the expectation of always chasing after excitements, and no need to push yourself.
I mean your job is never going to be the most enjoyable thing to do, is it?
So it's stupid to have the expectation of having a job that's going to be very relaxing and super fun all the time.
So I think not hating the job is enough.. and loving "the type of person it makes you" is important, but you should not prioritize it over the enjoyment, because you can't even build the identity if you don't enjoy doing the actual thing at all.

It's not about enjoying yourself all the time, it's about finding something where you find pleasure in the process. Just because you are not doing something to achieve a goal doesn't mean you won't achieve anything, it means you are gonna enjoy yourself on your way getting there.

I've read a bunch of your articles now, and I'm a payment away from reading the 'Rise of Fundamentalism' article. I enjoy the newsletter, (albeit not as much as I've loved the books), but this video did work for me. Good stuff. If there's more content like this I'll have to give it a look.

I am not sure how well this applies when one is in a situation merely to survive or to meet basic needs. I think a lot of people may be facing that in their lives right now with quarantine /work/ living situations

This is so helpful, I’ve always felt that if I committed to something there was pressure to “see it through”, which just resulted in unhappiness. I think this video will help a lot of people. Also I LOOOVE the font/logo at the beginning how do I get that on my videos ??!
