I had six of them over the years. VW beetles have personalities of their own. They have so many lives, they don't die, they just "hibanate". They are so trustworthy and loyal to their owners. If I found a good one, I would probably give it a shot. They are one of the best cars ever made.
I was sitting there just waiting for the guy to come running out of his house yelling, "HEY! THAT'S NOT THE VW I WAS TALKING ABOUT! IT'S THE ONE IN THE BUILDING BEHIND THIS ONE WITH NO MOTOR OR TIRES!"
😂
My first car was a 1973 1300s UK registration number SEA 426L. So we named her seal as she was light blue and I was thrilled to find some photos of her online a couple of years ago, still running. ♥️
Great video guys, love your positive work ethic too.
You make a great team!
My Dad had the 67' last year with the front and back separated bar bumpers. He bought off his boss for $200.oo.
He drove it for about a year and a half, and someone stole it from in front of our house!
DANG! Ole pops is a savage! He still kept his cool and got the valve in that tire, all while his shoe and his thumb was on fire. Ya’ll need to do a Pop got the hotfoot T shirt. Id buy one!! Lol
A tip on using your air tank, you can connect it to a fully inflated tire on your tow rig or trailer and “borrow” some air to fill your tank. It’ll work as long as the donor tire has more psi than the tank.
There's nothing like father and son working together, and that are real close. great minds think alike!.. brings back fond memories of my dad and I ..you guys are amazing!..👍
My daughter would love that. She is 11 and has told me she wants a bug for her first vehicle. Nice work Lance
One of the reasons why they are not as popular as they used to be is the safety issues like airbags and a host of others safety items that cars nowadays have that the VW doesn't have. I hope she changes her mind by the time she is old enough and ready to get her first car. God bless her.
Since I was a young kid of 8- 13 I've loved HERBIE THE LOVE BUG , and therefore loved vw bugs never owned one but one day I hope so for my son when he gets older he can have the excitement and awe of a vw beetle
I’ve got a 74 that I’m working on getting running reliably, this video just gave me more motivation to finish it
Just found your channel while on lockdown. We had a breakers yard in Ireland in the early sixties and broke lots of these for spares. We had a local guy who imported boat loads of mint Beetles from Germany and we supplied the parts to convert them from left to right hand drive. He also bought the registration plates and log books to put on them which was perfectly legal back then. We closed in 1966 when my dad passed suddenly and your dad reminds me much of him. The strong silent type of old fashioned mechanic. Stay safe .
When you drove it home that was icing on the cake for me
I had a 1970 and believe me the hell I put it through was not something I'm proud of , but it was my first vehicle! The memories where priceless, I even found they float just to say , fix it and you may know what a mini tank you have ,and someone can create some memories with a fun machine they are .and again you guys are a blast & priceless, so God bless you and thank for reminding of a good part of my past.
That was the coolest find ever! Love those old-school VW Beatles.
Same here
Just found You last night- Binge watched alot of the videos and really made Me think of My Father and I back in the day! He was born and raised in Creedmore Tx. Cherish every minute You have with eachother.....
Woooow that beetle is gorgeous and now rust on her does that guy really know how much of a gem he had in his hand to give away for free even as a non starter.im in England and u can sell those in that condition for premium money you should definitely restore it to showroom condition
david yates why restore it if they can get it running and sell it like that for money ive found some 66’s just the shell nothing inside for 3k
You can tell someone loved her enough at one time to keep her out of the weather im sure with a little work someone will love her once again
Would take that beetle in a heartbeat! I was 4 when I started working with beetles. Those are the best cars mechanic wants to their shop!
This was one of your best videos... to see the condition of that bug and to see it turn over, then the spark and the first cold start. Then the grand finale! The drive home was awesome!!!! Oh! And getting air in the last tire...👍🏾
Check the spare in the front hood. It may have some air in it.
This summer I'm getting an old VW van out of my girlfriend's grandparents' barn. So excited! Hope it's in good shape still. Been in there for about 30 years
"I noticed in the end of the video...her rear passenger tire went flat.
Well, she's home now...she can relax. ❤😊❤
VW Beetle was "tired" ... So she passed air ...
I've had 4 of these cars....
And enjoyed driving every one....
Growing up watching Herbie, I've always loved these cars. Wish I had one
damn I wish somebody would give me a free VW in that good of shape.
toot tall I got mine for free in even better condition, fun cars for sure
@@kingwreckersgarage9371 I guess I don't know the right people. Then again, these days everyone I knew has died out. Odd thing though, as small as they are, I can still be comfortable in them. That don't happen with many cars these days, not even so called larger cars. I loved my squareback, until the damn mechanical fuel injection screwed up. Hell to fix. So even after I nearly burned up the car, I still got more than I paid for it. At 15 years old never having seen a metric wrench, I was able to get a VW van running. Didn't stay running long, but I got it going after setting for years, with absolutely no specific VW knowledge at all. Had I known then how easy they would be to rebuild, I would have done that, but I knew nothing so I didn't. I had a chance to buy a nice bus, bukt the wife nixed it cuz it didn't have namby pamby power steering.
@@tootall5559 just got my 71 square running again today. mild cam'd 1776cc, heads and 40mm DCNF Webbers. nose to tail she's mechanically good, electrically there is work to do, it's ugly as sin, and a NW car but she's street legal and tagged. Had a 68 square in high school. Best SPG I've ever had, and best driving air cooled model VW ever made. hopefully you will find a VW the warden will allow some day.
@@dasgoofinhiemer5039 my wife died, and my current lady won't tell me I can't do shit, I won't take it, so if I find the VW AND the money, I'll do it.
@@jxckson_s I have ran up on a beetle and a van that had automatics. Not the best thing in such a vehicle, but they did have them.
I'm so happy to see it rolling on down the road definitely brought a smile to my face ,the best reward!
You really found a gem there. My favorite episode so far. Strong work

Ha ha - I had two 1969 white Beetles in the 1970's. The paint on both was horrible - VW used a "new" formulation that was supposed to prevent corrosion, but it caused premature corrosion. This car actually looks to be in decent condition based on my memory of my two examples from 40+ years ago. Two big giveaways on the year are steering wheel (chrome horn ring), and taillights. The rotted off running boards stuffed inside is classic. The battery tray on one of mine rotted through while I was driving, and the battery dragged on the road, shorting out the posts on the body. My dad used his plumbing supplies in his truck and torch to fashion something to get me home. Great memories!
I am so proud of that little VW Beetle 💖
you guys have moved me from all my old subscriptions to your channel thanks for the fresh format !!!
I like those old cars ......if you don't mind you allow me to join you .....!!!! greetings from riyadh saudi arabia ....
I love how relaxed and cool you guys are. No yelling (at least that we see ;) ) Makes it more pleasurable to watch. Thank you. Great stuff.
Wow, how cool was that!? How gratifying it must've been to be able to have that thing start right up and be able to drive it back! And for free! Great job as always.!
This is one honest no gimmicks, no frills RUclips uploads ever. You and your dad are a real team. You both deserve this car. Get it in shape and keep her. If you both agree to. Thanks. You now have fan from Jamaica. Take care, and be safe.
Amazing they never fail to surprise, pretty sure I wouldn’t of expected it to drive home😳👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I like the father son chemistry. Respect.
The bug sounds great. This is why I love old Vdubs!
That car wanted to leave that garage!
I am in the market for a good one, I had three , a 68, a 71 super, and a 77. Miss them all. So easy to work on mechanically. Remember, every time a Beetle is saved from the scrap yard, an Angel gets it's wings.
This was a pretty awesome find. Amazing how well the VW crank and ran. Makes we want to run across one of these little bugs for free offer.
OAN: Man I'm from the South and this guy has a strong accent. Crazy how his dad doesn't but he does.
I noticed the same thing. I’ve also been looking for a big or even a project to work on. I’ve got my own 72 Chevy truck I need to put back together but I want something I can flip
I bought a 1060 VW in ....oh 1975. Rebuilt the engine, new clutch, valves ( and would spend a cpla hours once a month to adjust valves...) had a lever on the floor to twist and get reserve gas.(about 35 miles) . I drove that car from Srasota Fl....for about 6 months...loved it. Had a rubber gasket aroune engine compartment so no water or steam came into the compartment, so NEVER stalled from running thru water. I had driven through 2 ft deep water. Also put a tuned muffler on it.... Then I went to Phx AZ, stayed in Sante Fe for about 4 months, drove around Phx as I went to college for 3 years, then drove back to Sarasota.... Then a pickup truck demolished the car and me . I put easy 100,000 miles on it, only changed oil every 5000 miles or so, adjusted valves monthly, tuned every 2 or 3 months, replaced brakes ..oh about 40-45,000 miles, put a killer stereo in ...(no a/c yet even tho I lived in Phx (HOT) and Fl (hot) never missed the A/C . The heater worked great..I spent a winter in the mountains around Sante Fe and damn it got cold. 35 HP ..Top speed about 64 mph. Once, I got right on a semi's ass...I mean 10 ft back. Got to (buried the speedo) I guess 72-73 mph ....lol My girlfriends brother called it the tin can . It had that oil bath air cleaner, little tiny tail lights...I spent a LOT of time riding around the desert outside of Phx... She never let me down....but...man no power!!!!lol You have a 40 HP there.
Mine was 35 HP
Great job, that starting fluid tire trick was really cool too !
It was such a pleasure to see an old classic car fire up once again. Wish I had one of those to drive around in.
"Can't go wrong with a free car... And drive it home." (Great ending music.
Jeff 😉👍 And it’s an antique
One thing is for sure, vintage Volkswagen Beetles are special cars in their own special way. She’s a beaut’ for being. Free car!!!
As many opportunities as I've had and passed each and everyone up, sadly. Good shot guys! I think you hit the mark!
I love a barn find - the idea of that forgotten beauty getting a new lease of life is just magical!
Great film, enjoyed every minute of it. Keep them coming, you and your dad make a great team he must be very proud of you.
You to are the best and it is because of you that I want to become a old car mechanic you are awesome 😀
Where's Mustie1 when you need him, lol!
He's the person I thought of when I first saw this.Mustie knows his VW's.
Sean Spring Hahaha I like watching mustie
Mustie1 would of check the engine oil !
I was thinking the same thing. Mustie would get it running
Mustie makes me nervous when he works on ANYTHING
This 1968 Volkswagen Beetle is a true time capsule. One item of interest is, has integrated gas gauge in speedo and also a separate gas gauge to right of cluster. Gas gauge to right of speedo was on US VW Beetles from 1962 to 1967. Prior years had a lever ahead of shifter to turn when ran out of gas. Had a reserve of 1 gallon of fuel to hopefully get you to filling station. This must have been an early model 1968 VW Beetle. Have not seen this before. Looks to be a strong relic of the past. Enjoy the process of resurrecting & making this VW Beetle road worthy again ... Slainte' ! Cheers !
Youll never find a beetle that's too far gone. They just turn into Baja Bugs 😉😂
Done that a few times myself. VW's are so cool and so reliable. Last one I got running in 10 minutes and the all original 74 Porsche 914 with the original fuel injection setup was started before I got it off the trailer and that took me about 1 hour. Ran like a kitten after a few tweaks over the next week. So sweet. You got a great deal. Fun to start these old beasties.
I was 2 years old when the VW bug was built 🙏
That has got to be the best barn find/revival/will she run/ free car discoveries ever! I hope you decide to do this one up good, with that special turnin rust flair. She's fine, she deserves it! 🤙🤘🤙
I’ve had 4 old bugs in the past and love em, they’ve all been great! 😊👍🏻
"Lets reseat this old tire with lighter fluid!!" BOOM! It worked! Folks don't try this at home. I worked on VW"s for 20 yrs, now retired. Those old vee dubs were so reliable because they were SIMPLE. Easy to work on, and overbuilt. Yes the heater, wipers, and electrical sucked, and they were grossly under powered, but they always ran, and they were GREAT in the snow! I've owned several. Brought back lots of memories. Love these guys. GREAT videos.
That is a great find! Check list for your truck/trailer: gloves, dust mask, tools, air hose, Full air tank and fuel can, battery and wire, jack and 4 way lug wrench, bucket and maybe some canned air to clean out stuff. If you have a generator on the trailer small shop vac ot a gas powered leaf blower for cleaning out stuff like that engine compartment. Pretty sure you can fit all of that in the bucket and bed of truck. Over all you did real good there
That old girl deserves a through tidy and a restoration back to her original glory. I think I'd check the cooling fins and thermostat fir sticks and nuts.
I use to no a man that took one of those Volkswagens and put a 350 Chevrolet engine in one. He would Polk long down the highway and when you tried to pass him he would mash down on it and runoff and leave you.
Great job, guys. interesting video.
I wasn't as daring when I got my 1972 Super Beetle barn find, especially not with 4 flat tires. So I didn't try to start her up. We dug the car out of 10 inches of mud, shoe-horned it past an 8-foot drop-off, somehow got it across a tree stump, and then trailered it home. The rear window was missing, and I watched acorns and leaves flying out of the car during the entire 25-mile trip.
A shop vac would have shortened this long video considerably.
You are correct, and that really "sucks: ... Better to not live in a vacuum, but to utilize a shop vac when necessary ...
Or even a petrol powered leaf blower...
or 2 sheets of newspaper or thin cardboard rolled into tubes one inside the other with the back end of one closed off. Hand-Made air pump.
An editor would have shortened this LONG video considerably.
@@Greg042869 ....but then what would we do instead of spray-painting our toenails and letting them dry while we watch? :) We all see how much crap there was in the engine compartment, how slowly they're removing it (possibly needing a considerably bigger bucket) (Estimated Quantity/Rate of Removal = Time to Clear It) yet we don't think - well some folk don't - to Skip Forward to where they're no longer removing the debris? I believe the answer lies not in shop vacs or video editing but in the fact that Life moves more Slowly in the Deep South than anywhere else. I love that lit petrol tyre inflation trick - I could watch that all day.
love how you drove next to your comercial sign on your main road in front of your shop with that beetle you revived. cheers from germany my man👍🏼
“FROM GRAVE YARD TO 4TH GEAR” Would be a cool T-Shirt slogan from you guys!!
I thought the exact same thing when he said it.
Totally cool slogan
"She's a runner " ... Out of the garage & in words of Doobie Brothers "Takin' it to the streets" ...
Only a Beetle could fire right up! I Think the spirit of HERBIE Rides Again!
I absolute love these old VW's they are truly legendary cars I own two myself and they are not going anywhere so I won't be giving my cars away
Thanks anyways for sharing your video take care and God bless
That's why I love old VW Been driving them for 30 years. Have a 67 convertible I had for 25 years Ferdinand Porsche was a smart man.
Hi guys, I'm a brand new subscriber and so far have only seen the rusf part looking forward to seeing the restoràtion videos. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and videos Rodney
Out of this world! She is real good shape an I know it wont take to make it a runner for sure. Congratulating on finding such a nice VW.
I really want one of these as a first project car. I've heard they're super easy to work on.
I just finished one that's now on the road and turning heads. They make a great first project. Super-easy to work on and lots of parts available. Just check condition of floorpans and heater channels/sills before you buy as they are a real challenge to fix if rusted out like mine were:)
@@martinharris5017 Good to know, thank you!
Heater channels are a lot of work.....floorplans straightforward......be careful VWs will nickle and dime you
@@lukasgarage956 My advice is "Budget carefully". There are so many goodies and aftermarket upgrades out there it's easy to get carried away. Fortunately I have a local parts supplier who is fair with prices and as honest as they get. Also helps to join a club and you'll pick up lots of knowledge and contacts.
Akin of Fury They honestly are easy to work on and a fun car.
I just LOVE the sound of a true old Beetle motor!!! Makes my heart sing with joy!
Would love to see it after a pressure wash and a little clean up
"We got it running with 1 tool." That's the beauty of old German engineering.
Don't be too enamored, an aircooled VW is about as sophisticated as a Briggs and Stratton engine.
@@leifhietala8074 maybe so, but they have stood the test of time over and over again!
Всем доброго времени суток,классный канал!!!
VW would have made an ad campaign out of that years ago.
This guy's need a vacuum
This car is in superb shape for 52 years old un-restored. It should be cleaned up back to totally original. THe interior was exceptionally nice even for a 10 year old VW Deluxe Sunroof. There are very few bugs that can be easily put back to totally original (without big expense). Please dont hack it up! It would be easy to find someone who wants an original example like this. (Well the engine was replaced at some point, because Dual port started in 1970 or 71 ).
She sounds really good surprised me ill tell you that. I was seeing you all cleaning out all that crap and was saying she ain't going to start .
Yup it's the second time watching the vw being brought back to life but it's not the first time I've reviewed your videos there's is a lot to learn from your passion to bring back these vehicles to working order then the problem comes when you might have to let go( down the road) and that's my problem , because you start with the idea of if did this or do that to enhance the old with the new . So thank you for you sharing with us your videos . To stand back and to say job well done now it's time to put it to test (cruising down the road with a friend) the spark to dream of one more !
68 good year. You just can't kill a vw i love my bug drive her every day 🇦🇺🙃
THAT Bug is in very good shape. Everybody owned a Bug at one time! 👍
That VW BUG is saying:
Well now they call me the breeze
Cause I keep rollin down the road
from Lynyrd Skynyrd's: THEY CALL ME THE BREEZE
ZACHARY KEITH J. J. Cale brother.
I wish there were more videos exactly like this one. I think about this video daily because of how good it is
68s are my favorite Vw. Nice find. 🤘
I understand the 68&69 are the best beatles ever built. They had the larger engine and the updated trans axle. to me the are the best cars ever built because if you take care of them they will run for ever and when there is a problem it is easy to fix. Love them.
Yes the 68s are the best in my opinion, but I'm biased:)
Daniel Heartsill I had a 68 before my prior 73 project. And my 68 was my favorite!!
Martin Harris I agree!!
Daniel Heartsill My first was a 68, and it had the irs first year for it!
That's awesome! She deserves to live on and it looks like she's in the right hands for her new life. I'm excited to follow this one.
I've always wanted a beetle one day I'll get one
Justin Smith Grab one and take your time! Get a project one
Justin Smith yeah me to. Had a buddy in high school that had 1. We could put $10.00 in gas and go for a week. And gas was .99 cents a gallon. And we had Ethyl.
Monte Wow you just brought back memories!! Gas was about $.95 when I started driving. My buddy and I would split up some money and put $10 in and drive forever in our Beetles.
I had a '74 Superbeetle that was a lot of fun. It would always stall when rolling to a stop sign, so I had to leave the clutch in as long as possible, but when it snowed, the engine braking would start the wheels locking up, so I would pump the brakes with my left foot, gas with the right, and scrape the frost from inside of the windshield with a tape cassette case with my left hand, and shift with the right hand. Steering was a luxury. The good old days. I do like the big sunroof, though.
Justin Smith dont mean tobrag but im getting a 1967 today
Another awesome episode! I think the story was even better, had the trailer loaded up for the loooonngggg haul for around the corner! The power of b-roll!
😎 The Best Things in Life are Free...
That's so awesome that you found a running barn find VW.......for FREE at that! I'm hoping to get as lucky. A VW has been on my bucket list for almost my 48 years of living😁👍💯
You don't want the fan housing stuffed full of rat debris either.
Porsche admitted "Well, sometimes I looked over his [Hans Ledwinka] shoulder and sometimes he looked over mine" while designing the Volkswagen Type 1.
Und er läuft und läuft und läuft 🐞and he runs and runs and runs, VW Slogan 1960
Wow, what an unbelievable find. I owned 2 VW bugs and found them to be great. I'm glad to got a "free car" that you were able to drive back to the shop.
This is the stuff Disney films are made of, looking forward to see the follow ups atb from England
What about England???
bravo! she runs
Awesome ! Amazing, engine covered in crap, flat tire, no brakes, but the handbrake works, and then driving it home. Great work guys.
Old VW engines rarely ever die. They just need new clothes once in a while.
The regular maintenance is more frequent on air cooled, though less than a rotary for example. However, this is one of the few cars designed to run forever. So keep it clean, run it regularly, and it'll never die. I miss my 67. Shouldn't have sold it so cheap... But heck, that's life.
Back when VW made reliable, long lasting cars. Sigh.
@@bliglum Did you know the original beetle was last made in Mexico 2004? You sir, in theory, could still snag one...
@@alecfleming373 Yup. But I prefer the look of the earlier models.
@@bliglum I do too. In fact, I think the 67 bug was the best looking year of the whole line. One year only door handles, last year of low back seats, last year of the loop bumper and it was also unique to the year, not to forget the first year of the more pronounced up right headlights. I daily drove it to work for a year, so I got very personal with the little car. One of my favorite cars. The next two on the list, 89 VW Fox Wagon. Super fun to drive! And a Honda CR-V. So I have broken brand loyalty. But I done this years ago, grew up on Ford, first ride was an 85 Ranger.
Really reliable cars... 20 years sitting and runs after 20 minutes work
There's never a doubt that once you get an old Volkswagen a run will take you wherever you want to go you're right it probably wouldn't go cross-country excellent job guys
Be nice to see it after a pressure wash.
I really enjoyed this video. I have a 72 Super Beetle that my grandfather gave me before he died. I had to go all the way from MO to NY to get it. Unfortunately being from NY, It's pretty rusty and soon after I got it back in 2007, the fuel line rusted under the car and it's not run since. It's sitting in the back yard with a tarp on it since the windows leak. I hope to some day get it running again but it may be more work than it's worth. I've never seen that trick with sealing that tire up. That was pretty neat. Keep up the great work.
That little bug must of been well cared for before being parked up all those years ago
Xcccc
Definitely a thumbs up on this one, thanks guy's
you did't look for the spare. maybe it had one.
Awesome video and another part of history has been revived. I’m happy to be part of the Turnin Rust family and I look forward watching/supporting your guys journey. 🤘
The world's agenda, corona virus, watching this movie will make me happy I will forget the agenda for a while..
Man that was a fantastic video! Awesome to be given a car that actually runs and is a classic. That packrat nest was awesome! Surprised to see the wiring in such good shape since critters seem to love to chew wires!
