I find it quite relieving that the dozer side was actually trying it's best not to strain the ol' Case too much 😊 We know the Case is strong, but it's not beating the more modern and heavy blob of steel that is a dozer.
It should be obvious from the start that the prairie locomotive would lose just for the simple fact that it is a direct drive machine going up against a viscous drive machine ( uses a torque converter for power transfer to the drivetrain ), all that needed to happen was for the direct drive machine to stall out, which it did several times. Then the other losing factor is the dozer has a 50K pound plus weight advantage.
@@crazydave4455 It’s been my experience that hitch height matters when things are hooked close, and not a whole lot when they’re hooked 20 feet apart as in this case. The height advantage was mostly mitigated in my opinion.

@@crazydave4455 You’re right, just saying the farther apart they are while hooked lessens the up and down forces because of the long angle of the pull. We used to hook as short as possible when a stuck machine needed to be lifted while being pulled out. :)
Cable should be horizontal. Because it is sloping upward from the Case, under tension it tends to reduce the weight on it's rear wheels and so reduce traction.
The Case is a wonderful machine and a tribute to its maker, but it didn't stand a chance in this tug of war. The crowd was far too close to the cable too - if it had snapped it could have cut someone in half. I once pulled a stuck 360 digger out of a lagoon with one of our Cat D8s and the cable I used (a lot thicker than the one in this vid) actually smoked with the tension on it (presumably because I had kept it well oiled)..
It didn’t appear to me that the Cat was even trying to pull against the Case. I think that they just let it pull the Cat backwards which is still a lot because of its weight. No tracks digging in and showing any slippage and not sound of a diesel raving and pulling and no significant diesel exhaust under load gives it away. No doubt they didn’t want to tear anything up.
