About exploration and rewards: It is so tempting to fill every little crack with an optional/secret area, but you should really keep a healthy amount of empty corners and dead ends so when the player does find something interesting, it feels more exciting.

My brother studied geology and geography pretty extensively, so I was vaguely aware of some of the environmental stuff (particularly the tectonics and mountains and how rivers come from the mountains), but I didn't know rivers only converged, and didn't split! That's so cool. Lookit me, learning stuff. xD I tend to focus too much on conserving space (both memory and map space), and my senses of proportion and spacial awareness are AWFUL, so my world maps always end up too small and plain. xD This video was exactly the helpful advice I needed to start working on better maps. ^_^

Great suggestion! I'll get onto that ASAP. I definitely have a lot of tips and tricks for interior maps. Is there any specific Interior you were thinking of? House, Castle, Shop, Arena?
Great Job on your explanations! My original map looked great, but the realism seemed a bit lacking in the way mountains and rivers worked, so thank you!!
Thanks so much for this video. Great explanations and advice, by following this I feel like I've made the start of a pretty decent world map :D Keep up the great work
Yes, that's always an option as well. I'm not too much of a fan of how the foot hills blend with the mountains so I'm still looking for a custom foot hill asset. Maybe I'll make one.
Cool! Got some good tips here, like rivers converge, they don't branch. Glad to see some RPG maker videos that aren't 5 years old. I'm trying to research whether it's possible to randomize maps. Age of Empires II is my favorite game because it has randomized maps which makes exploration meaningful.
did quite a map overhaul after watchin this. tho what i find interesting is that you used the big mountain tile to "break up the repetitiveness of the mountain ranges", while i make the entire mountain range of the big tile and use the small one very rarely.
Supercool guide 😎🌈 A lot of useful information about the logic of creating a map - my respect for this ⭐ Pleasant music 🎸 I like your presentation of the material, and the ease with which it goes... Wish you inspiration, and fair wind to dreams 🌊👩🚀🚀
Kinda feel like reviving an old project of mine now. I Am going for more of a connected world/overworld... best way I can explain what I mean there, think open-world. Not a sandbox, but there is no true "overworld/world map". Gives more of an exploratory feel imo as you don't have a zoomed out view of the surrounding world, just the locale that you are in. Think of pokemon with how you go through the zones, but this is much more open like in a modern open-world title like skyrim.
I just downloaded rpg make mz to try it out. When designing my first world map I am noticing I have to use the same buildings a few times. Is there a way to get more assets for the over world type in the database? The dlcs that I found only seems to have outside and inside tilesets.
Im super late this party BUT I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! can i ask what kind of computer yall use! Im so bad at making sure i get the right one!! YOURE AWESOME LOVE ALL UR VIDEOS!!
What's the issue with the waterfalls? Are you using the specific waterfall tiles and they aren't working? I should be able to help you out if you can elaborate your problem for me.
@@LvLUpDesign A long time ago, when I used VX, making waterfalls was easy. Now the tiles of VX Ace, MV and MZ looks weird since they changed the river tiles...
@@LvLUpDesign I found a guy with the same problem, he decided to parallax the map... you will understand: forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/help-me-make-this-not-look-weird.52331/
Yeah that's one of the biggest issue with the RPT that's come out on both MV and MZ. That guy is correct though, Para laxing the desired graphic on top of the map would be the best option in this case. As time goes on, I can imagine the community will create some assets to fix this problem. I'll be releasing some asset sets in the future, (A few months away) So I'll take note of that so I can address it when I design the tiles.
i like this map, it looks like a chicken(the sandy bits down left are the leg, up from there is the white tail and all the way to the top right is the white head)
While it is semi-rare, there are actually quite a few rivers and streams that split across the world. I used to live by one where one fork was atlantic bound and the other pacific bound
Just started using MV When you say the forest is a "natural blocker" and to make an event/map. Would I just make an event that basically outlines the forest and transfers the player to a new forest level map? or is there a smarter way to do that?
I made a big map for the overworld and It is massive with atleast 40 different towns and cities that are waiting for events. and I was going to make a new map when I made an amateur and stupid mistake. Instead of making a new map, I accidentally edited the current overworld map and got it resized to a small 30x30. and I just lost everything... I literally lost everything without saving it.
Depends on how many events you're running. It it has lots of events then there is a chance any map can lag out the game. Bigger maps tend to fall into that.

The map is just a map, having maps in your game doesn't make it buggy. There are many ways to implement gacha, including an official plugin that you should already have in your DLC folder.
Hi FarbenCut. No you don't need to have a world map. Plenty of modern games don't. If you look at final fantasy 10 and 12, they both have regions instead of a world map.
One day you won't have enough time to read every comment! Another smash up job. You mentioned the one forest was a barrier; are those tiles impassable (i didn't think they were)?
That's a nice world map but I think the size is way too big (which is the most important thing?).😂 Seems difficult to make a game that can make good use of the entire map.
For a person who specifically talked about shifting tectonic plates you went with a single continent design? Very interesting. Personally I find the Pangea-style world really boring but to each their own.

Doubling the height and width like you suggested would make the map 4 times as big. I'd say that's too big.
