What we need is solar paint, wherein the actual paint on the car absorbs photons and transmits it to batteries or motors.

The sun is a great powerful source of energy. Trying to capture it and retain its energy is the real challenge. Someday I would like to see the heat of the summer somehow retained to use in the winter and the same for the winter cold being available to access in the summer heat.
Also, humans put out all kinds of energy. If there was a way to capture that (given all of the humans and all life forms-especially children- put out energy), how do we capture and utilize that?

  • @petesig93

Lightyear 1 has a driving range of 1,000 km, but Lightyear 2 has a range of just 500 km? OK. Lightyear 2 has a less spacious interior. OK. Two compromises that would seem to be contradictory - performance no greater but interior will be less marketable.
But the 2 is not suited to long road trips? For a vehicle with such a long range this would seem to be a great failing. The whole point of the solar panels would surely be to extend driving range for those longer trips? Otherwise today's existing EVs with 450 to 600 km range will do the task much better.

Hi and thanks for your input.
In Europe these kind of distances are quite useable and we have (for now) less sunshine, but still the self charging feature will still throw in a couple of miles.
The 2 will be a family car, so it can’t be that much smaller than the Lightyear 0.
Let’s hope we will see it very soon!!

I think that as more efficient solar panels are developed, a vehicle could gain some charge just from starlight or at least moonlight. The ability to upgrade the shell by swapping it out for a better one would be nice. Modularity for the purpose of upgradability has been a feature of personal comuters from the beginning. Cars could do the same.

The vehicle that has the better solar collector with the better energy storage will win the customers.
