Just came across your video because I bought one of these sets in 2006 and was setting it up, hope it lasts a few years

Mine works fine but buzzes a little and I'd like to put bigger filter capacitors! I'm just worried because hard to open and then you need to seal it back

I'm just wondering if those two high wattage resistors were designed to run hot, but should have been heatsinked. I am also wondering if the problem with the amp might be some bad solder joints nearby those resistors. If the amp can't be fixed, you can always use an an external amp, as you said.

I've got one of these also except mine does not have the heat sink on the back. It always worked well for me, but I stopped using it when I bought a Polk Audio sub. I now need to use the H/K Sub-TS18 in another project and the level control has gotten quite scratchy. Came here to see how to remove the back for access to the level pot. I would also attempt to troubleshoot the board and fix it. It doesn't seem to be such a bad repair to make.

Hi Catus Maximus, thanks for the great video! I've got one of these and it hasn't worked for 5 years and we've just been going with out bass.. Got a bit of extra scratch this month and am thinking of replacing. AM I correct that I can replace with just about any powered sub to work with my harman/kardon AVR 146 A/V Receiver? Cheers!

Hi Catus and Adam; I have the same issue with my subwoofer and have the AVR146 A/V Receiver. Can I replace the subwoofer with any other model and make? I am in Mexico and so things are not always readily available. Thanks for any assistance.

Woot first! I always heard that Harman/Kardon was a good brand but just looking at that sub it looks like it was made of cheap plastic.

@K/D Audio Harman Kardon had some quality problems on their BDS and home theater Subwoofers. But sadly, those are more or the less standard problems for those machines as they all use similar power supplies inside (e.g. Teufel has the same issues on their Impaq series). Often it's a simple fix like a cap or resistor or diode or power on chip. Remember, H/K does not make power on chips, they probably did not know this is a crap part when choosing it.

I have the Harman hkts 11 5.1 det with the matching sub, it burned out, the smell was terrrible. It happened when I turned it on,. Replaced the sun with the Klipsch R-110sw and never had any issues with it and it matches this set perfect. Its so powerful that it litteraly shakes the room when watching movies.. So yeah the Harman sub is sub par quality..

I had a HS 200. My sub burned the inside electronics. it is crap. The dvd loader was replaced three times (guarantee, but I never had to tell the repair shop what was wrng with it; they knew.). The volume knob of the amplifier is made of rubber that gets totally sticky. Total rubbish. never bought Harman Kardon again.

  • @timothy2830

YOU THINK, if they didn't put the plastic backing on the amp, the heat would have been dissapated by the sub's air movement and output though the port. Might not had been a lifelong fix, but I bet it would have lasted a bit longer.
Edit: i saw one of these at a thrift... i was jealous because someone got to it before me. You just helped me find out how I avoided a headache. Thanks!

Any suggestions on a replacement amp? I’d like to just reuse the sub and box but have no experience with home theater subs or amps.

You could hunt around for another plate amp or an external sub amp like an NHT

I have a set of speakers that I bought in 1985 realistic optomus I had only one issue the foam around the 8 inch woofers disintegrated I was able to find replacement but it was difficult the speakers start at 40 hz far lower than most. I did buy another set of realistic speakers later in life but they didn’t perform like the first ones. My new receiver is a Yamaha and my old realistic receiver I got in the 90s blows the new one away. I got the new one so I could air play. They just don’t make stuff like they used to.

I really thought H/K was a reputable company. Hah I just inherited my sister's old setup and the HKTS210SUB won't power on. I suspect that the PSU is faulty but will wait a while to discharge the caps before diving in. Meanwhile my 20+ year old Aiwa TS50 sub is still rocking. Only thing I need to replace is the foam edge.

Just because the board is a bit black does not mean it does not work.......... Most H/K stuff is pretty easy to fix, some caps, some resistors, but I have the HKTS210SUB. The older TS 7 / 11 / 15 etc. series seems to be even worse.

    • @janjohansson2567
      @janjohansson2567 3 года назад

Exactly this - some boards just gets discolored over time due to heat, not neccesarily due to something failing. Board being near black can definitely be a red herring, problem could be elsewhere.
Another common problem with those amps seems to be the glue that dries out and becomes conductive over time. :(

I have a ups, it has turned black just like the amp board, right at the resistors, but works perfectly.

I have the same sub woofer and I can see that it is crap. there are several issues with those boards. pcb tracks are toasted and glue used with time and use gets conductive. bad engineering there. that guy is right, he was going to invest many hours fixing it and sooner he will have another problem.

I had a HS200. Sounds absolutely great until it burns down its subwoofer within a few years. Very disappointing. Never bought Harman kardon again. I sold the sub to a trader who believes in the soundquality but replaces all other internals. a shame.

I had the same issue much worse...the pcb board tracks had to be redone with wires as the board was burnt and pcb cracked...This is clearly a design issue ...
