Technology made possible for manufacturers something never possible before: more features, higher prices with lower production costs. They are taking out buttons because they are EXPENSIVE compared to redesigning an electronic interface. That’s plain and simple the reason. They tell you many stories but the truth is that these cars are higher priced AND are worth less compared to previous generations… lesser materials less physical complexity and many many heavy electric and cheap motors for controlling everything. That’s also why the surplus weight (other than the batteries ofc). Cars used to have the best of the best in materials and technology but these huge ass screens are too economical to be skipped. And people love these tricks. All in all I would die to know a TRUE cost breakdown of a 2023 7 series vs a 2007 7 series.
I think it has become cool to hate on the new BMW styling on the internet. Personally I think it looks amazing, modern, menacing, broad shouldered, like an MMA fighter wearing a tailored suit. I think the dark colours suit this style best. Also disappointed in the review that seems to me to be “this big heavy luxury car is big and heavy and doesn’t handle like a sports car” well surely if you want a sports car then that’s what you’ll go and buy. Looking forward to more objective reviews in the future.
Their design head mentioned in interview BMW have 40 million social media followers, annually they sell fraction of that. Hating BMW online is now a bigger industry than owning 1.
Black colors suits this best because its so overstyle especially upfront that the black makes it blend but if you get any other color it becomes monstrosity. It just looks boring and why the fck they put a tv like that back there for 4 grand. Just remove that, put 2 ipads like everyone else and use the rest 3k to make the interior a bit more luxurios. At the moment you have 2 screens, a bit of diamond and then the other part of the interior is completely disconected. It's not cool to hate on BMW, its just a bad design and people are calling it out. Everyone likes the touring M3, because it makes the front end not as bad and it kind of works with the avant version. If you say that BMW are moving in the right direction right now and you are a BMW fan, you are just lying to yourself and you know that.
I have been waiting for your thoughts. I would like another review after four months or so. Joe really didn't like the i7 even before the review, so I don't expect as much enthusiasm as to other cars he likes.
When Joe puts the word 'honest' in the clip title, you know the review is not going to be complimentary! 😁 Lookswise, the nose is not exactly elegant. But the profile and rear look ok. To be fair the i7 is getting very good reviews, from what I've seen. I guess being a full tonne heavier than your M3 Touring, the cornering will come as a shock, but maybe not so bad in comparison to other full on luxury EVs.
I have driven The latest Maybach GLS600 and Bentley Bentayga for the last year, and after sitting in the BMW i7 it’s as luxurious and high quality as those cars. Haven’t driven yet though.
Funny because i rewatched your 1,100 mile in a single tank video of the 7 series yesterday, curious which one would you pick if you could do the trip all over again?
Not sure why manufacturers need to cut costs with new car prices so high, they must be raking it in. They are now out of reach for most. The irony here is that Europe are building cars for China whist China and Korea are building cars that we can actually afford. Agree wholeheartedly with your review, would not prevent me from enjoying being driven in it though. Appreciate your honesty and frank views as always.
That is normal, when second/third world countries become richer, so do its people and such new customer segments open. German brands have dominated Europe for the longest time and now they need to cater to upcoming markets to increase their market share. Germans manufacturers can afford this, only the real die hard car enthusiasts will hate, but they majority of the european customer will just buy or lease the new vehicles while the new markets in asia will buy these vehicles en masse.
@@JayyyCloud mostly agree with you, not sure you can call it normal though as I believe that this is an unprecedented situation. I hope that EU manufacturers do not turn their backs on the home markets as I think that would be a mistake but I welcome cars from elsewhere for some much needed competition.
@@stephencollins7714 I can't say if manufacturers like BMW or Mercedes really care about their home customer base. The drop in sales in Europe is worth it when your vehicles are selling like hot cakes in Asia and making up for the losses in Europe. I also appreciate some competition, unfortunately it has become more apparent that design language is being copied from brand to brand (see Kia with strong German influence) and car groups ordering the same light units, screens, buttons, etc from similar contractors.
I have previously commented that BMW has already limited sales of the 7 series in UK, but this car can only make that target market smaller. As a potential buyer of this car, currently running a 2023 M8 Convertible, A 2021 X7 40d, and 2021 X2 Mesh Edition, I am the epitome of a BMW ’fanboy’ but whoever signed this ‘7’ off needs their P45!!! I have the old BMW 7 Series and I have to agree it doesn't look as special inside. I'm not sure I like the interactive bar which changes colour, it looks plastic. I would have to turn the Han Zimmer sound off as it would annoy me. It is also extremely expensive now as there is no diesel option in the UK and no heads up display. I think I'd buy a cheaper BMW X7 with a diesel engine.
Other than the absolutely fury-causing issue with the ESIM and the drama getting a data connection working so I can use the Cinema Screen in the back of mine, I love it.
Thank you Joe for your honesty and transparency in this review of the i7. That's how I see testing, but as you know, that's not always the case, far from it.
Controversial, but I don’t mind the exterior. It’s not pretty, but it’s imposing and has a presence. More so than it’s rivals. It looks like it would belong to someone important and looks different to the rest of the range, which I like. I really love the interior too.
Didn't get a chance to say hi at SMMT but I drove this around the track also, after checking out the Merc EQS and EQE I thought this was more impressive to be fair. Its gorgeous inside and fast but I agree the styling is bizarre and at £135k spec, I'd rather have an older 7, loads of fuel money and a few fun cars on the side. Rear seat experience is where this really shines.
Great review as always from Joe. Nice interior, dreadful looking exterior, and BMW dealers and specialists will be rubbing their hands with glee when all the tech goes wrong 😂
I’ll be honest I don’t really like the interior either. It’s not terrible, it’s just a bit over styled. Much prefer a 7 series from 5-10 years ago. And I dread to think what this will look like in 10-20 years.
@@johnb8956 it’ll still look hideous 😂 BMW have lost the plot with most of their designs now; there hardly anything in their current range that looks good. I doubt I’ll buy another if their current design philosophy continues. As you say, the older 7-Series were lovely cars
Cost cutting or the fact that this is the most monochromatic, generic & rental looking G70 interior I've seen? Only 1, in fact, the cashmere & cloth or cherry leather have all looked quite deluxe. This is like 2nd coming of E65, journos didn't enjoy BMW pushing the envelope then, either, will be curious to see how the market takes to this 1, @ this size, weight & BEV this is new segment for BMW. Curious to hear what you think of this tech in neu 5er (also not a small car), or even better, XM hybrid V8 drivetrain M5.

G70 pricing is insane, given what you could pick up a well equipped new G11 for. Hybrids are pointless in this segment, too - why add another massive weight bump for minimal benefit to a 2T+ limo?
It is so sad having to experience over the last couple of years how BMW seems to have lost it with some and quite a few of its cars. It really makes me ponder if I hear that the driving dynamics are nowhere near as good as they once have been, whilst this has always been a BMW trademark. The outside looks are subjective, but to see how BMW has come from something like your 740LD in 2017 to something like this in just a couple of years makes me cringe personally. A German car journalist recently said that he admires “that Porsche doesn't seem to have the need to please a specific market at all and they still get sold all over the world, whilst all other German premium car manufacturers seem to be focusing on one target market only.” Very sad but just as true. I wish BMW would start to be doing what they are doing with their motorbikes and introduce something like a heritage fleet. Thank you for your honesty, I couldn't agree with you more! Great work as always!

Agree with Joe!!! I have owned over 13 7 series, the last one being a 2022 Alpina B7, which is awesome BTW, and I can’t get over the fact that the new 7 looks cheap, and ugly. I hope that BMW somehow could bring back the classic beauty of the Ultimate Driving Machine! Cheers
