We're interested in what this project may say about our culture. Our hope is not actually to fool people into believing anything, but to challenge audiences to think. The seed of the idea began from the anxiety that the internet may have become too huge, not just in its breadth, but in how it has run our lives. Have we become too reliant on it? Are we apt to rely on Google to tell us the truth instead of on our own critical thinking? We wanted to take something that could be disproven by pure reason alone and then build a wealth of online information around it claiming that it is true. We could have picked anything. We could have made a fake news report claiming that scientists and mathematicians at MIT have announced that they have "discovered a new number." The number exists between five and six, and they are calling it the number 'spleen.' We might also have said that after years of research, a Rutgers professor has managed to create a square with five sides. Or that a mathematical theorist in Arizona has proven that 2 + 3 can actually equal 8. All it would take for anyone to disprove any of these claims would be to simply think about it for just a moment. Given what we mean by the word "square," and given what we mean by the term "five sides," there could never be a square with five sides. Even with unlimited resources and time, such a thing could never be invented. We know this based on logic alone (in philosophy, this is called "a priori knowledge"). Another example: based simply on what we mean by the word "married," and based simply on what we mean by the word "bachelor," there will never, ever, ever be a married bachelor. Again, we know this by pure reason alone. Likewise, one cannot "ascend to the bottom" or "descend to the TOP," as one would in the Escherian Stairwell. We can distinguish these logical impossibilities from claims that the Yeti exists or that the Hoverboard has been invented, in that one cannot simply disprove the Yeti or the Hoverboard using reason alone. The Yeti and the Hoverboard are at least conceivable in a way that a five-sided square is not. With unlimited resources and time, it is plausible that the Hoverboard could one day be invented. So the claim that the Hoverboard exists, while untrue, is not logically impossible. The idea with our project was to take one of the logical impossibilities, make a fake show claiming its truth, execute it with rigorous realism incorporating the contributions of some amazing actors, and create other online materials that support its veracity. Will people actually believe it? Even if simply taking a moment to think about it is the only proof you need to show that it is false? Like you, I do worry about our culture's mindless consumption of information. I think it would be tragic if humanity were to eventually abandon its powers of reasoning. So this project is actually a response to that anxiety. Our hope is that this project will allow us to learn some things about the internet age and perhaps, ourselves. It is also an insight into how modern myths and conspiracy theories are created and upheld. As a sidenote, it is also a brilliant social experiment, and a social media experiment, AND art project all baked in to one! Very impressive.
The truth is you simply can't just say 2+2= 4 Why ?because it's an inverted question. 2?+2? =2______ and 2______ = What? For example 2 cars + 2 people does not equal 4.
As an Instacart Shopper, I can relate. Some of the newer buildings are a maze and have a walk from parking to unit that is the equivalent of walking 2 city blocks.

When you think about things like that house which is built on a well-obfuscated hill (the name escapes me), it's not hard to believe that someone could create the illusion of a continually descending stairwell. For starters, we need a more elaborate design than what is presented here. More than two flights of stairs are basically required. Second, we should consider putting the individual flights of ascending stairs at angles. Even if they're going up, we need to make the person walking them feel like they're going to fall downward if they don't hold the guardrail. Third, the ascending stairs need windows facing outside. Fourth, we have to engineer the external terrain around said windows to create the illusion of descent even when your immediate path ahead of you seems to go upward. Ideally, it would be a sort of megastructure. Short flights of descent coupled with much longer elaborately designed periods of ascent. In fact, if the ascent could just be a very narrow slope instead of stairs, it probably would fool most people.
The actual transition was when his body covered the camera to pan right. The "sitting on the bench" was added to mask the obvious cut in the background audio. And everyone is making sounds that doesn't make sense to mask this transition. still a brilliant job, attention to detail is spot on. But for the love of the God of Physics, you can't do this unless you make one of the landings inclined at a steep angle. In order for the incline to be unnoticeable, you have to make the stairwell, unnecessarily wide. Like 8-lane-freeway wide.
Between 2:39 and 2:40 you can notice a small shift in audio, hinting toward an edit cut. The person taking up the image at that time is also completely still, may even be fake inanimate stand-in, making a clean cut possible.

Such a stairwell actually exist or at least it did at one time , my father took my sister and I to this stairwell in the early 1960's before RIT moved in 1968.

the penrose stairs and the Escherian Stairwell both seem like a play on angles verses physics the question you first must ask yourself is " how to build a stairwell on flat ground" well flat ground just means a flat surface, so the surface can be on an angle but still appear flat if your senses are fooled by a structure that appears to be on no angle its all in how your mind perceives what your looking at but then you find yourself asking the question " if we really are standing on an angle how are we not unbalanced" well that comes back to a really old argument does your Mind have power over Matter well in this particular instance we would have to say no because your not actually consciously aware of the change if you are not aware of it, it is in control of you. We perceive things only in a matter that our mind has been able to Quantify down to your current level so something such as building a flat staircase that appears to go up and down but in reality doesn't have any ascent or decent seem like magic. the most basic explanation i can think of is the Cafe Wall, Line Illusion

The video was a bit of trickery created through the use of deceptive camera angles, careful editing, and digital effects, produced in conjunction with a (failed) Kickstarter campaign (“The Stairwell Project: Building a Modern Myth”) intended to help fund the creation of videos, articles, web pages, and other material establishing a backstory for the mythical stairway in time for Imagine RIT, the school’s annual Innovation & Creativity Festival

You just walk over and around painting on the same floor same level. You never change the elevation but you walk over and around a panted area, with paintings which give you an illusion of satires. There are not any real top and bottom landings as the top and bottom landings are all painted at the same level, while all walls around you are also supported by painted lights and shadows to give you the feelings of a staircase. Handrails are appears to be real and are installed horizontal while you get the feelings of sloped handrails due to the paintings. The job of the architect was to cheat at us deeply in our brain and to draw lines; the way our eyes to make a mistake.
Just a thought: Why are they boggled by this? The fact that (1) The DESIGN was made; (2) The STRUCTURE was built. Were the engineers and the architects who built the structure idiots not to understand this? For a building to be constructed, it should have a Blueprint, they might have seen it. Why do they make simple things so complicated?

When i first saw the video i was skeptical at first that the video was fake so I looked it up on Google. Turns out it is true because you planted evidence to support it. Thing is many people (like me) fall prey easily to Consensus Reality - when everyone believes that it is true, then it must be true.
I do hope that this video would change people's perspective of reality.

You just walk over and around painting on the same floor same level. You never change the elevation but you walk over and around a panted area, with paintings which give you an illusion of satires. There are not any real top and bottom landings as the top and bottom landings are all painted at the same level, while all walls around you are also supported by painted lights and shadows to give you the feelings of a staircase. Handrails are appears to be real and are installed horizontal while you get the feelings of sloped handrails due to the paintings. The job of the architect was to cheat at us deeply in our brain and to draw lines; the way our eyes to make a mistake.

Why are they boggled by this? The fact that (1) The DESIGN was made; (2) The STRUCTURE was built. Were the engineers and the architects who built the structure idiots not to understand this? For a building to be constructed, it should have a Blueprint, they might have seen it. Why do they make simple things so complicated?
