Once again a big thank you for all the lovely reviews. I am unbelievably busy and have no time to answer individual questions which I also get by emails and messages etc, every single day from all over the world. I will just say quickly here, the water drip feed is simply a 2way gang valve from an aquatic pet shop. Bit of tubing and an empty milk bottle. The drill I mainly use is a micromotor, Google it :-)The burs are a variety of diamond, stone and rubber, they all do different things depending on speed, pressure, wet, dry, worn out or new. You just have to experiment and practice. I have a large dust extractor as well as using the mask. Using water minimises dust levels considerably. Have fun and take care. ♥
Some may need a more detailed video. But I understand being busy, so... You did a great job though! If this is what you do with a scratched glass, you should start scratching all your glasses lol
Finally found out how to review your comments LOL....things changed and I didn't have a clue. I would just like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone, for such lovely comments and compliments! Have a great 2014!!
Lesley Pyke you know what ... I had just started to watch videos again few weeks ago when I watched your video, after my mom expired 22 december ... (( .. i ........... (((
Watching this video inspired me to try something new. Which has led to a career of exploring the engraving arts.I greatly appreciate your semi unwitting mentor ship has provided me with a renewed passion for creating art. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your techniques and this wonderful art, that has completely transformed my life!
What a wonderful demonstration!... Your 'film maker' skills are excellent and your glass work is stupendous.. Thank goodness you did not put some silly background music like many of the other videos on RUclips! - I love the hum of the flex shaft grinder/carver. It adds to the experience. Thank you again. You make it seem so easy.
Thanks for sharing. Watching you do this is what I was looking for. Most glass etching vids use chemicals, sandblasting, pre done stuff, ect. Making wood cases, saya style, for knives I etched; I found "drawing" into wood more enjoyable. I got my first set of diamond tips for Christmas. Off to ruin some glasses to start feeling out shading.
Thanks Tink (your setting won't allow me to reply directly to you) that is very kind. I think that my next video...when I have time...will be on some of those basics, which will mean I have to tidy up my desk first !!
This is , by far, one of the best videos I've seen on carving/engraving glass! This is ART. The video is about ten minutes needless to speak about the time you spent on preparing the camera, editing the video and the water hose and changing the carbite heads. Really, this needs more thumbs up and hats off. I will try to apply the mushroom design you displayed here.
Ich graviere seit über 30 Jahren Glas, Holz und edle Metalle. Was Sie mit dem Sektkelch, wahrscheinlich dickeres Kristallglas, ist wirklich sehr, sehr schön geworden. Hut ab, god Job!
Very creative. To think someone would have just thrown it away. But with your artistic eye and talent you saw more than a mere scratch. It came out one beautiful piece.
WOW!! As I'm into pyrography I wanted a rotary tool kit. After watching this video I can't wait to have a bash at glass engraving. Lesley Pike your work is fantastic. Going to have a look at your web page. Thank you for your great video!
As amazing as it is hokey. Great laughs and terrific video. Thank you so much for this. As a professional tattooer for 12+ years, I'm always messing around with different mediums. I picked up a piece of crap battery-powered engraver for 2 bucks on an impulse. Tried it on a water bottle. Knew I would enjoy it if my instrument wasn't garbage. (Expected. Great 2 buck investment to get the answer I was hoping for, regardless.) Tried a Dremel with the standard "comes with it" bur. Couldn't stop. Made something that *somebody* might think is rad. Not me, but still fun. Then found your video. Here we go down the rabbit hole. Not expecting to nail a mushroom like you did. I'll probably end up eating too many before giving it a go. Jk. Buying your kit this week. Yay!
I have a visuals of "Jason falling down a rabbit hole" :-D Thanks for your compliments, best of luck and if you really want to learn, BIG TIME, join my Patreon teaching channel www.patreon.com/glassengraving ! It is relaxed and fun and full of my best videos.
Hey Lesley , always a pleasure watching and learning from a pro like you . But hey that's not why I'm writing today . Yesterday I watched a video from a guy that was really just into showing how fast he could bore a hole through glass . Like flat plate glass or mirrors , or mugs and jars and bottles . Honestly he didn't give a care about the raw edge he was leaving on each item , but he had a clever idea for a wooden template to hold the barrel bit steady . But that's not it either . This caveman (just kidding) had a VERY clever idea for keeping water trickling . He took a one liter plastic bottle . . . . filled it with water , and warmed up a very thin scratch awl ______ and about a third of the way from the bottom poked a tiny hole in the side . This butcher (again just kidding) had the perfect tiny little stream of water flowing on his projects . (Oh I know it's probably old news but I was so stoked with the idea I had to tell other people ) heh heh . Happy Thanksgiving and best regards Ms Pyke , Gary
Thank you Gary, that poor bloke's ears must be burning! rather primitive water dripping system, would be very awkward to not be showered with spray, no doubt fine for just drilling holes. Interesting nonetheless.
@@glassengraver It was primitive :-D However it did not spray . He literally could set the bottle down wherever he wanted , and just the tiniest little thread of water came out fed by gravity . Both hands were free to do whatever . The cringe part was the raw edge around each hole . He never suggested dressing the hole with fine sandpaper to prevent cracks . (Yikes)
affascinata da tanta bravura..... spettacolare! bravissima! non arriverò mai a questi risultati ma adoro guardare tutti i video di chi è più bravo/a di me. Grazie per questo video ^^
BAD ASS! Skills you have!! Now take 3.5 grams dried Cubensis (powdered). Squeeze in half a lemon into your newly etched glass, pour in the powdered Cubensis, let sit for 30 min. Fill up with water, add your sweetener of choice, pop in a few ice cubes then enjoy your new glass from Pluto!!! Nice hand work on the etching.
I would have called it good about 3 minutes in. That’s the difference between an amateur like myself and a real artist like you, knowing when to stop. All that detail is amazing for something as simple as a mushroom.
Thanks everyone, lovely comments and I had a good giggle at the funny ones especially yours critterlover4278 I am sure your engraving is not that bad! :-) I have a page on my website that you might find interesting, hasn't been updated for some time but I hope to soon. www.lesleypyke.com/page/LP%20Glass%20Engraving%20Techniques.htm
Firstly can I say thank you for the vid, a great combo of humour an pure artistry (a rare thing on here lol) I bounce from one art/craft to another an see many great examples of peoples skills an talents, yours is up there with all of them, such beautiful shading an detail, an I will search out more of your work to share with others, many thanks :-)
Just....WOW.....that was incredible. You are a beautiful artist ! I love the little fairy on the opposite side of the glass. I bet when you look through, it appears as if it is flying through the field, or about to land on top of the mushroom. I love it ! can I purchase this cup ? PLEASE !
Thank you. It is actually a fantasy type butterfly on the other side I added at the end for a bit of 3D effect. It does look a bit like a fairy when I look at it now :-) I do have this glass available for sale, have not advertised that fact as yet. Do contact me by email for further details if you wish.
Hi Ms. Pyke. Just wanted to say, you're my inspiration on this art work. I have learn some tricks from you. I love this video, because it shows what kind of tips for tour engraver you are using. Thank you very much

I wish I could be able to do this, but I am not good at drawing or clay modeling (I would think some of the same skills would be needed for engraving), plus I am sure you need a steady hand to do this. I enjoy watching your process very much, seeing someone carve something beautiful into a scarred item to give it new life gives me the inspiration to continue with the crafts that I can still do. Don't stop breathing new life into otherwise plain and unused items!
Far out. So talented. Don't know how you did that freehand. Would be lovely to be able to do something like this, but this mere mortal hasn't your artistic talent. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Hello, first, you do awesome work engraving glass. I love watching your videos. I have Scm's engraver and sand blasting cabinet and while sand blasting is simpler to do I'd like to do more with my engraver. As of now I tape a picture, of what I'd like to engrave, on the inside of a glass and engrave away. However, being new to engraving, I'm having difficulty knowing what engraver tips are best utilized and when. Just as you touched on when to use the grey or brown rubber tips in your comments below, how do I know when to use other tips? For instance, I know to use the smaller, pointier tips for outlining and detailed engraving but is there a chart (or video you're aware of) that explains the use of all tips? Only a few came with my SCM purchase. Thank you very much for your time. Have a great day!
Hi Harry, I get asked these questions every day so I set up a glass engraving page on Facebook "Lesley's Glass Engraving Club" please go and have a look and you will see the answers to your questions and many more. Good luck.
does anyone here use the Dremel Rotary tool? iv just started doing simple stuff. wondering if i need to upgrade. or get the big diamond bur things? or is it just me? i cant do the depth that she can with what i got. it all looks the same shade when i try it. also i dont got that water set up thing. any help would be wonderfull.

Your work is AMAZING! I embrace as well, but I do not think I can compare to your work. Yours looks so realistic. Though I use the diamond tips, and I'm sure I've seen the rubber and stone, yet I don't think I realized what I was looking at. I have so many questions about how I can make my work stand out a bit more and look add realistic as yours. I also draw and engrave wood. I would love for you to take a look at my work and maybe share some advice and tutorials with detailed explanation, I would greatly appreciate it. It is always a pleasure watching you work! Have a blessed day.
best glass art work your the best . sorry about your divorce but life goes on with your projects thats so relaxing , peaceful mind set. i started engraving on glass 2 years ago and people love it thanks to you for inspiration. i have Facebook if you like to keep in touch.
AWESOME! I just got an etch kit w/a tiny etch tip yet I cannot use the stencils as they are hard plastic!?!?! Go figure! You're very talented! I tried it freehand &!was all over the glass bottle! Lol!
You are and amazing artist, I start glass engraving my self and your videos they help a lot and I thank you for that, my goal is one day to be as good as you are, by the way you are a very pretty lady to , I wish you all the best with your work, keep doing tutorials for as pleeeeeeaaaase.
That is brilliant work. I'm trying to get started but mine always seems a bit rough!! Will try rigging up a water bottle and drip having seen this. Am having great trouble getting bits to frost the glass, where do you get the 'teardrop' shaped bit used to frost the stem of the mushroom? Going to work my way through all your videos now for more tips. Thanks!!

Hoya Lesley you're work is amazing one question what number grit diamond burr do you use and what rpm speed on you're micromotor do you use thanks.
rough or smooth, old and new are the grits I use :-) Speed depends on what I am doing, the burs that I am using and what effect I want with it.

Amazing work! You are very talented! I just purchased a rotary tool and wanted to see what its capabilities were, and here I am. In awe....

Isn't there a threat of electrocution by dripping water with a power tool? Thank you for sharing your experience.
As long as one doesn't get water on the plug end it is fine.

Thanks!!
