Alan Hyde was a top England player around Desmond’s time. I played with his brother for years. He told me that Desmond learnt to play in a club with virtually no space behind the table, and therefore why he was so quick and stayed up. Not sure if this was apocryphal but straight from Alan, who I knocked up with a few times.
Unfair to compare. Give the modern-day guys the equipment of the 80's and let them play by the rules of that era and top guys from that era would be OK. Tibor Klampar in one interview said that he would still be a TOP 10 player in his prime in this era. Except the Chinese, others aren't that impressive.
People massively overrate modern-day players due to optics. Now even a semi-pro can feel like some World-class player because everyone can upload nice training or game highlights. There are so many examples, when 50-60 year-old former pro's roast all these fancy and arrogant youngsters. World class is World class in any era.

Peter Engel is such a legendary coach and player. And on hoping that such a lovely human being. Wish him all the best
Now THOSE are shorts! 😄
They played surprisingly well, especially if one thinks, it's year 1980.
Nice!
the ball was so fast then
Solid play. Nowhere near the current pros but solid 2,000+ USATT rating.
no comparison possible.
