    Kpop is an industry. There are tons of Korean artists who are not kpop because they don't come from the industry. BTS started as a kpop group and have grown far beyond the boundaries of that category.

      Nope. Kpop is literally an industry, and there are Korean artists who are not kpop artists, like I said. Koreans themselves are the ones who came up with the expression that BTS are bigger than Kpop.

      Kpop I think is whatever the person or organization (or app) is using it decides it is. Some use it as "Korean pop" (nationality-marked subset of the genre), others for the idol industry, others as "any Korean music", others as a very difuse genre itself...
      BTS uses "kpop" in interviews outside of Korea as either "idol music" or "hallyu music", in different occasions, because they answer accordingly to the concept their interviewer applies to it. On their V Live, they applauded the mentions of "kpop" on the Grammys so I wouldn't say they consider themselves completely outside of it... It's just they might be applying a different concept to it to what people who says they're not kpop are using.

    • @indigodragon0613
      @indigodragon0613 4 года назад +24

      @@MarinaEariel That's true for many outside of Korea, but koreans themselves make the distinction between kpop and other Korean artists, and we should not speak over them.

      @MarinaEariel 4 года назад +2

      @@indigodragon0613 some Koreans make a distinction, some don't. So we're in the same issue: there is not a "fixed" concept so everybody has to thread lightly because you don't know what meaning they're applying, unless you have a chat about it.

    It was Suga who said that Kpop is integrated content. It's not just the music, but the interpretation and performance-- which includes music, dance, beauty and fashion. This is all part of what is called the Hallyu wave... It's a wave emanating from S Korea including k-dramas (now found on Netflix. Highly recommend.), beauty products (unparalleled... Have you seen their skin?), Fashion..( Need I say anything?
    New reactors always remark on the clothes they see) ... and, of course, the music and dance of kpop (which encompasses all of the above). Of course, the hallyu wave is also responsible for the cutting edge technology and cinematography seen in music videos and Kdrama. You'll see.

    Thanks for checking it out! ARMY don’t mind if you pause and want to comment, we are happy to sit through long videos if reactor wants to pause and make comments and is engaging! I’d never been in to boy bands before BTS (unless you count Nirvana as bb lol), and yes the trilogy album concepts and their story arcs, symbolism and metaphors is why I place BTS on a different level from other pop artists. Also I tried to get into other KPop groups but didn’t find them deep or intellectually stimulating in terms of lyrical, story and visual content. I like that BTS write about socio-political issues, unfair class systems and mental health awareness. BTS MV’s and performances are like fun mind puzzles to solve! I hope you get to check out xCeleste’s “From Nobodies to Legends” and “BTS” Contributions to Music”, that will give a good summary of BTS’ history. Not sure if you noticed the clip of their old dorm, all 7 boys slept in one room because their company was broke and near bankrupt, they were truly underdogs. And PS, I don’t like churros. Too much sugar! 🤣

      Great comment. I was into boybands in the late 80s - early 2000s but, being black, that meant Boys 2 Men, Dru Hill, New Edition, B2K, etc, so it's always been really annoying when people - let's be honest, usually male people - use the phrase "just a boyband". Making listeners feel happy is no less a skill than making them feel sad, it's just a different skill. I like happy music, sad, angry, introspective, Political - talent exists in all cornerd

    All of kpop does not have messages and the thematic albums..
    The thematic albums and self written lyrics and storylines are what sets bts apart from kpop.
    A lot of groups these days follow the bts formula since they were so successful doing it.
    But they lack sincerity and realism unlike bts music which is about themselves.

    • @AngelaSealana
      @AngelaSealana 4 года назад +11

      There is some of that. But there are in fact K-Pop artists that are sincerely trying to do great things with their music. I'm not a big fan of Stray Kids, but they are producing their own stuff with a message & storyline and they have said they're influenced by BTS. Also Chungha being a female soloist is using her platform to promote a message of empowerment for minority groups & more respect for dancers. Those are just a couple of examples. The more I dive into Kpop, the more of a mixture I see. And I think ARMYs should celebrate that because that's exactly what Bang Si-Hyuk wanted to do with BTS and BigHit.

    • @ancip485
      @ancip485 4 года назад +15

      @@AngelaSealana well to that I say... arianators aren't really compelled to be fans of Selena just because they both are from the same country.
      It's like saying stan Selena because she makes good music too. Of course we gotta respect the people who make good music and most of army have definitely checked out other groups. But if their musical style or production or their personalities or ideologies themselves dosent really attract us and hold our attention... that means they have a long way to go. And it's not a matter of a couple of songs being good. Bts also stands out in the aspect of them being really outspoken in the industry from the very beginning and creating styles so unique to themselves. Something that stands out and constantly evolves to impress. At the end of the day its individuality and something new that really impress people. If a lot of people are just following the same thing that's already done... is it really authentic? Or can it be called art? Think of Micheal Jackson or the Beatles. All are people who brought something new to music after being inspired by other legends. They didnt just imitate their inspirations. They transformed themselves into entertainers who stand uniquely. I think army views bts in that way. That dosent mean following your inspiration isnt good. It just means why go for a follower when the original still exist.

      @@ancip485 facts. I'm an army and have gave other groups a chance just to see what they have to offer. Although they may try to follow the same regime... it's not the same. The more your learn about them the more you will respect what they are all about. Im 53. Ive listened to MANY albums and no one is doing it like BTS. They literally make all hits. Their side B tracks could all be hits. Its really remarkable.

    SUGA was the member describing what K-Pop really is.... that is one reason why ARMY can be a bit sensitive when western media and others try to pigeon-hole BTS into the "Kpop" label as though they are not as diverse and genre-breaking as they are.... as though Kpop is a fixed genre that they can "dismiss" any artist from Korea in to, they don't put UK artists in to a UKPop genre and Canadian artists in to a CanadianPop genre, etc..... just not accurate at all in general, but especially with BTS.
    Anyway, that could be a whole thread of a discussion so I will stop there LOL. Thanks for checking out more about them and getting to know them better. Can't wait for you to check out more.... please keep in mind that some of the "who are" videos are a little out of date, just because the guys continue to grow and put out more and more content, it is hard for anyone to keep up with them hahaha. It is a great strategy you have going there, trying to understand first who they are, where they came from and what they represent.
    Please be aware that BTS and commonly used generalised labels people give them - a boy band being one and Kpop being the other - are not the same. BTS is NOT your typical boy band and they are not a typical Kpop group either. They have outgrown that category long time ago and play now in a league of their own!!

    Just to update the album history, after Map of the Soul: Persona, they released Map of the Soul: 7 this year, which covers the Jungian psychology concepts of Persona, Shadow, and Ego. The 7 was chosen because there are 7 members, and they debuted 7 years ago in 2013.
    Their next album is coming out in November and is called BE. We don't know much yet, but it seems to be focused on the impact of Corona on their lives, their decision that their role in the crisis is to cheer people up and bring positive energy to their fans, and embracing a "life goes on" attitude.

    To be clear, putting a throughline in your albums to tell a longer story or express a complex THEME is not a kpop thing - *it's a BTS thing.* Most groups, even those who started with a lot more resources than BTS, are content to do CONCEPTS.
    Concepts are also related to the song like the Theme, but it's been known that the Concept usually comes first (Bad girls? Aliens? Carnival? Dark and moody? Cute, innocent boys?) and then the song is written to fit it. With BTS's themes, the songs _have to_ come first. You know these songs came from BTS themselves because they have talked about these experiences. You can't retrofit a song just so it'd go with a theme like "the joys and struggles of young men and women at the peak of youth, on the cusp of adulthood." That's how you got the HYYH albums:
    - *Intro: HYYH:* "Anxiety grows like a cancer" in Suga. He asks, "What am I doing with my life?" Suga also explored this in Tomorrow from the last album.
    - *Baepsae, Dope, & Fire:* The struggle between the youth and the older generation who tell them they're at the bottom rung bc they're lazy. That they should put off their dreams to fit society's mold. Also explored in N.O and No More Dream in their first album arc about school.
    - *Young Forever, Moving On, Autumn Leaves, Butterfly:* The impermanence of youth, young love, and understanding you will need to grow up and move on someday.

    That was Suga that said Kpop isn't just music. To him, it means integrated content. What to recommend next? Depends on what genre(s) you like. I saw this posted somewhere & thought it very helpful: If you are interested in looking into BTS's discography, I have compiled a list of songs based on loose genres. (this is not all of their songs) Start at the genre in purple hearts you prefer the most. Have fun😊 💜 Latin influences: 💜 Airplane mode pt 2 filter home chicken noodle soup ft Becky G. 💜 Hip hop: 💜 Hip hop phile jump silver spoon / baepsae tomorrow NO outro:her Spinebreaker We are bulletproof pt 2. If I Ruled the World (all of these have good lyrics and explanation videos. 💜 Slow and mellow songs: 💜 The truth untold butterfly sweet night jamais vu your eyes tell Spring day We are bulletproof the eternal 💜 Rock Influence: 💜 Fake Love rocking mix Run alternative mix Dionysis boy in luv danger 💜 Neosoul and r&b influences: 💜 singularity stigma my time like (slow jam mix). Run (ballad remix) We On Autumn Leaves Love is not Over Let Me Know I Need U (urban remix) 💜 Rap: 💜 ugh ddaeng outro:tear cyphers 1-4 intro: skool luv affair. (Look up lyrics please😊 There are explanations for UGH and Ddaengby DKDKTV ) 💜 Jazz influences: 💜 House of cards still with you 134340 / Pluto 💜 Pop (different levels of pop): 💜 Save me Pied piper Dimple Sea Miss Right Boy w luv I'm fine Euphoria DNA 💜 EDM (there is a range from hard-core to less intense): 💜 Fire Dope IDOL Not Today Mic Drop Blood Sweat and Tears. That’s what happens when you start doing your thing well. 😒 They’re so humble still and that’s so endearing. All Kpop is not created equal though...they’re the best out there now (that said, check out my old favorite group-they broke up-BAP and their video “One Shot”. SO good!)

    WRT learning a new language: One must have the Linguistic brain to be able to learn another language fluently. It took me over 6 months to learn English but that was at the age of 10. After 13, it gets VERY difficult because something about our brain's ability hear the nuance of different pronunciation (dies?) no longer functions well for some reason. This is not an issue with some people, as their brain is wired differently. RM is one example of someone having a VERY HIGH Linguistic Intelligence (different from IQ). I speak several languages but RM's ability to craft words into a beautiful concise prose, both in Korean and in English, absolutely amazes me.

    Hello! Thanks for the reaction
    I just wanna say that the BTS rap line has their own solo projects outside of BTS discography ( I said this bc some of the group's albums contains solo songs of the members) that you might be interested in:
    - RM : has two mixtapes, the first one is *RM* (2015) contains 11 songs including a ft with Krizz Kaliko, and *mono* (2018) that contains 7 songs that has to be listened in an specific order (pure art btw)
    Also he had collab with Wale, Fall Out Boy, Warren G, Little Nas X, Honne, the korean hip hop legends Tiger JK and MFBTY, and more
    - Suga has also two mixtapes under the name of Agust D : *Agust D* (2016) and *D-2* (2020) with 10 songs each.
    Also he has collab songs with Halsey and Max, and has produced songs for many great artist included the ones that made him want to become a rapper, the korean hip hop legends Epik High.
    - J-Hope has one mixtape: *Hope World* (2018) and has collaborated with Becky G in a remake of the song *Chicken noodle soup* (2019)
    Also, since he is the Main Dancer of BTS he has videos of freestyle dancing under de name of *Hope on the street*

    It’s not fair to compare apples to oranges like one person Dimash as opposed to 7 person BTS but it did catch my attention that Dimashs last album some months ago went Platinum in the first 37 seconds and at the end of the hour, it went Platinum 3 times. BTS had 3 albums in one year. I think Dimash has one. I am a DEAR but I am also ARMY. BTS is awesome not just as a group but also individually. They have incredible backstories and I have immense respect for each one of them as I have sky reaching respect for Dimash because since a toddler, he knew what was important to him and he never wavered his whole life. Jimin told his mother when he was a small child that he wanted to be the best swordsman in the world so the next 8 years, he studied swords especially efficient with a lethal wooden sword.
    Dimash as a toddler sang constantly so at age 5, he started music academy. Teacher said he had perfect pitch but wanted to go home because the piano was out of tune.
    BTS, Dimash Kudaibergen and Hua Chenlu are amazing prodigies and I want the world to appreciate their talents and core personalities.

      @@MetalGuyReacts Please, if you do react to BTS more, react to their BTS UNIVERSE storyline. From the very beginning. It's a lot of songs and a lot to get into. But I bet you'll enjoy every bit of it. And after watching all the storyline MV's and teasers you can watch xCeleste's summarized video (which cover's the storyline to last year) The storyline is not complete, it is still ongoing. But whatever you do don't watch xCeleste's summary video at the very beginning it'll ruin the whole experience for you. You can watch it after reaching a certain point of the storyline, then everything will become clear.
      Hope you'll watch it. If not, it doesn't matter. You can watch their other songs and MV's without getting into the story. It's fine. BTS has a wide range of music with lots of variety, so you'll find what suits you the most. .... Hope that you'll continue.
      Thank you for doing this.....
      ARMY purples you.💜

    Yes, please do react to Who is BTS! It is a little outdated now with some of the info, but overall still gives a good intro to each member. As long as you remember no one video can encapsulate the entirety of a person, obviously. :)
    This is BTS Intro part 1 is also a very good intro to their history as a group and their kind of overall mission statement.
    If you're curious, there is a video called Why BTS was treated unfair in Korea, that talks a bit more about the kpop industry.
    Also, as an aside, in addition to the kind of thematic arcs to their album series, BTS also have a Bangtan Universe fictional storyline that runs through some of their MV's in addition to some short films. I wouldn't recommend exploring the storyline until you're much more familiar with their names and faces, but if you ever feel confused by some of the imagery on their music videos, it's very likely because it's related to the storyline, lol.

    BTS actually got attacked by kpop fans a lot from the beginning cuz they "aren't kpop enough". Now Western music industry have prejudice against them because they are kpop. So ironic. I don't think artists need to consider what genera are they in, just do whatever you want, art is free, category is for those who wanna study your music. As long as it's real emotion and passion, put your efforts in it, and makes people feel things, that's good art. We don't need to classified people by race or gender, don't need to classified music by origin, genera. Less labels, just enjoy
