- In September 2019, ATF nominee David Chipman posted the following on Reddit: “while at ATF I conducted studies involving people who failed background checks to determine how many later committed crimes with a gun - many did. This is a perfect opportunity to arrest people BEFORE committing crimes rather than responding after the fact.”
I find this statement incredibly troubling because - setting aside 2nd Amendment issues - this violates our constitutional requirement for due process.
He should not be the head of the ATF.
Actually he’s perfect but the ATF needs to be defunded and all those workers need to thrown out in to the street.

David Chipman is a current criminal, and post-crime as well. So why isn't he behind bars?
Pre-crime is bad. Even if we live in a deterministic universe, our ability to see the future is limited and thus pre-crime is morally wrong, until you have a 1-to-1 function analysis of the event, in which case it would just be a "state machine". Pre-crime is the real tragedy here.
Don't worry, they don't have enough pre-cogs to really do anything.

The nominee says "it is the job of the ATF to prosecute people who lie on a 4473 form" however, that rarely if ever happens.. I think the rate is 0.03%.. So they aren't even enforcing the laws that are already on the books.

If I were asking the questions I would instruct the person being questioned that I would be expecting simple answers to my questions with no time burning rhetoric they always use. I would also cut them off if they attempted to drag their answer to run the clock.

No, Chapman said when someone “fails” a background check.... People can fail a background check for hundreds of reasons... none of them being a felon.
Many can be declined for having common names or such. I sold guns. I saw two or three declines in a day on Saturdays years ago. Most was due to clerical errors. Every one of those people were white, BTW. Hidden agenda.
