  • Ellipses are foreshortened circles.
    Openings of cylindrical objects, such as bottles and teacups, are circles. These circles will flatten more and more as you tilt the object. Ellipses do not have sharp corners because a flattened circle is still a circle. Knowing how to draw ellipses will help you to build the illusion of three-dimensionality into drawings of everything from coffee mugs and teapots to fruit and tree trunks.
