Moving Handcar Over Track Switch

- Kalamazoo's 2017 model year handcar is lightweight and is quite easy to move across switches.
If you like this handcar, check out my latest handcar creation video: • Great Basin Velocipede
As a boy in the 60s had the use of one on about a mile of temporarily unused track for around 12months.

If a train derails, call this guy.
He’ll lift up the wheels and get em back on track!
On some weekend I’d like to ride this and roam around county side
It’s all fun ‘n games till you hear a distant horn...
WHen that happen, you try to go as fast as possible to try to out run the train just like those cartoon.
@@Hung_Nguyen_90 Just bail, there is no way in hell you will outrun a train.
Lol
@@Noobixm no no you just gotta try hard enough
Heh yeah. Though, it's not everyday ya see a handcart. Cool

Go then. There are other worlds than these.
I’ve been working on a railroad all the livelong day
Oh yeah, I forgot about that song! Silly me!
and here I thought he will switch the tracks.... no wonder
Hey bro, did you know about something called ”switching the tracks”?
I think the switch was electronically controlled. It’s very hard to change a track route manually these days.
i want this in my school
Multiple 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗
Rigjt on. Ya don't see a handcart every day. I wanna help on other side to make it go faster and less struggle. Too bad i hardly have any transportation.
Why not just throw the switch?
locks he does not have the keys to..
Do a video of doing this, on the Northeast Corridor
we can use this technology in car, bike, jeep etc etc🤔🤔🤔🤔

Wheeew! That was lucky. Dang near lost a $400 handcar.
where can I buy this ?
kalamazoomfg.com. These are not cheap Walmart quality machines. Craftsman kits that require woodworking skills run $4500 and fully assembled ready to roll cars start at $10,000. Hundreds of hours of work goes into manufacturing these machines.
a little late but you can build them way cheaper if you have the skill to do so. We built one out of a wood frame and used bike tire rims in the '80s with no real plans just a book on them from the library about the history of them and the basics of how they worked. now ours had to be turned around to go the other way but it was pretty easy to do so. In 1990 we found a stack of metal rail wheels in the woods near a closed railroad station that looked like it was used on them. sadly a friend told his uncle who scraped metal and took them all
Amazon 😂😂😂
So, how do you slow down if you're going downhill on one of these??
They have brakes.
you could see him step on the brake pedal just before he stepped off at the switch
Good
👍👀🚂

Does anyone know max speed? I'm very curious thanks
28 mph downhill on 2.0% grade
Uphill slow, downhill fast, tonnage first, safety last.
Around 27 mph down hill. Its not recommended to go this speed though.

I wanted to go to Ancient Rome and give it as a present to emperor Octavianus Augustus. For his birthday. Thanks for the info. I’m sure it’s faster than his Quadriga.

Something tells me you don't have permission to be out there on live, well used track.
I did have permission to use the tracks. This was filmed at the Nevada Northern Railway Museum in Ely, Nevada where the railroad runs daily passenger excursions. I operate handcars on the same tracks and comply with all railroad and federal rules. I carry a track warrant at all times and communicate with both the dispatcher and trains by radio to ensure safe operating conditions.
@@kalamazoomanufacturingcomp1751, so, where is your radio in the video? Cool cart none the less.

Seriously, all I want for Christmas is a handcar.
And a track to run it on.
Now couple it to a standard railway grain car and whoever manages to move it gets a prize
Bullet train 🙄🙄👌
Kakakakakakakakakakakaka 😜😂😂😂😂
And here i am like an idiot getting down and lining switches when i could just be picking the cars up and setting them over.
One of my life's desires was to use a handcar but never did.
I thought they can just pass through if going into merging switch.
A train going through can break the switch, so railroads prefer not to go through incorrect switches. The hand car would have just derailed because it's so light
That is only for special spring switches.
i love this video but when he did not change the switch.
it hurt me
Good creativity 👍
I would have switched the point first lol oops the train is heading straight for me Duoooh!!!!!!
The switch looks like it’s electronic. I don’t think that’s a viable option.
can't you just switch the switch?

Id love to hook it up to some cars, see how much strength I me and the guys got
Wow The Guy Who Was On the Handcar.
Amazing
Darn near lost a $400 hand cart.

There's a really cool scene with one of these hand cars in Stephen King's The Gunslinger novel.
The moment you're enjoying yourself unauthorised and a train comes😆!
This handcar had full authorization to use the yard track where this video was taken. Handcars are treated like locomotives on this railroad and communicate to the dispatcher by radio to ensure the move is safe.
@@kalamazoomanufacturingcomp1751 Yeah I thought so. I was just joking. Thanks for the reply🙂!
