Honestly everyone, the rule that the flute solo has to be done in one breath was invented by orchestral audition panels to knock people out of the game. In a performance it's perfectly acceptable, as long as it compliments the contour of the musical line. Besides, Debussy himself once said "Music is the silence between the notes", and in the hands of a great artist such as Pahud, the effect is enchanting.
le meilleur enregistrement le plus beau 4 génies Debussy Rattle Pahud et tout le Berliner Philharmoniker Un régal absolu à écouter tous les jours sans lassitude!!!
One of the hardest orchestral flute solos ever written.... Your breathing is applicable to resonate the sound you and your conductor would like portrayed. At least Mr. Pahud has a BIG name in the flute world
Bonne Anniversaire M. Claude Debussy! J'aime beaucoup votre musique! I like Emmanuel Pahud very much, a wonderful flautist next to James Gallway. Viva Berliner Philharmoniker, the best orchestra in the world.
Isn't it just! Especially the look that Pahud gives the oboist - so great to see such perfectly intimate chamber music playing in the middle of an orchestra!
Wonderful first flute Mr Emmanuel Pahud. Wonderful sound of the horn. Mr. Stefan Dohr. Wonderful sound first oboe, harp, first clarinet. it's beautiful to hear Claude Debussy. Congratulations! Greetings from Brazil.
the flutist is not required to do this solo with no breath. There two or three places that you can take a breath. No one should be a hero, not even Mr. Pahud. Regards!
People saying the breath isn't acceptable - that's not true, as long as the phrase is continuous. The audition panel don't sit there and count each breath you take. But they will notice if a breath really sticks out. Big difference.
+Tamara Simpson People are complaining because the opening passage is typically played without a breath in the middle. If there is one acceptable place to breathe, it would before the last 3 notes.
Do let's hear your flawless interpretation of this solo, then, please. After all, if you are of such caliber to criticize Pahud, you must be a magical flutist, indeed...
It was partially because of that video that I took the final decision to travel from South America this year to Berlin and see the beggining of the Season In Aug-Sept. I can´t wait to see it when this time I will actually be able to see the concerts
I much prefer Pahud's tone here to some of the others I just listened to in other recordings. The opening melodic line is indeed quite low on the flute in a range where it is difficult to create a strong and reliable sound, but turning the flute as far in as many flautists appear to do creates a weirdly metalic almost oboe-like tone, which really does not fit the mood of the music. Pahud here instead leans much more lightly on the inward turning using it just enough to get an edge to the note but at the same time holding back enough to soften the tone and make it feel much rounder and more similar to the human voice. Excellent choice and execution. I wouldn't expect anything less, of course; but nice to have my expectations met on hitting play.
Actually that breath is not acceptable in an audition... and he does it quit well! I don't understand these stupid rules, because if it does not interrupt the music, why can´t we do it?? it's really great, Pahud!
It IS acceptable. Can we please get rid of this silly "rule"? As I mentioned in a comment above, I won two professional auditions where I took a breath in Faun - in the prelims and in the finals. Big deal. It obviously didn't bother the committee that much. Practice it both ways, so you're flexible.
damn, what perfection. the hobo was quite out of tune right at 1:21 though, but after his correction it got just really good. berlin phil is definitely as good as it gets
if one followed the logic of your statement, only flute players can criticize other flute players, and only prominent flute players can criticize prominent flute players - whatever - i happen to agree with tounge88, and i'm NOT a flute player. the breath is unfortunate, and i don't care who pahud is. i prefer the principal flute player of l'orchestra de santa cecilia (1987) under leonard bernstein. that said, i love some of pahud's recordings.i just don't like his 'l'apres-midi' solo here
Downvoted. Shame on you for publishing an incomplete performance! If you published "excerpt from" in the title, I would have accepted your choice and moved on to other recordings and NOT wasted my time.

Indeed, that's Emmanuel Pahud, our Principal Flute since 1993.
You are lucky to have the best flutist of our time!

The best performance ever !!!! Bravo to the Berliner Philharmonker, to Emmanuel Pahud, and to Sir Simon Rattle !!!
You better listen to Munsch with Boston?

Superb performance of the Berliner and of the conductor Sir Simon Rattle !

Claude Debussy offre une beauté musicale qui me transporte au-delà
For the time being, we're only selling it as a stream in our Digital Concert Hall.
the flutist. simply amazing!

I think my favorite rendition of this is NYO-USA’s
sheer perfection from the world's no. 1 orchestra

+Matthew Lin (Matt) I think breathing there would generally stick out more than taking one earlier.
Tamara Simpson if we don't breathe we die :'-(
yes but it's important to take it at the right spot so not to interrupt the phrase. sounds weird otherwise
Actually, they do. Audition panels often use the opening phrases as a way to eliminate people if they can't do it in one breath.
We're still working on it, so stay tuned!

Bravissimo.
Perfect transition between flute and oboe, where the 2nd takes over at 1:22. Nice to see it, wonderful to listen to it.
magnificent!
E. Pahud. Almost immortal. 🎶 brz.sp.state
Cool I'll have to check it out ;-)
Sehr schoen.
Excelente!!! lo máximo!!! Gracias!!!
Thank Debussy.
I love this piece! And to see Pahud play it with the Berlin Phil is even better...
Ultimately a feast to my ears!
Bravo!!!
No, he's still a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
This performance is overwhelming play.
I know it's pretty amazing seeing him dance to this music. It was quite scandalous back in the days ;-)
Well done. Amazing performance, at least for what i've heard. Congratz Berliner. :)
Langlamet plays the most beautiful harp I've ever heard!

There's a short, fairly recent DVD about Nijinski which is pretty good, too. It contains a fantasy with all his famous characters, including Petuchka.
Nijinski danced the faun in a ballet version. Forget the choreographer. Nureyev did a good version (on Video tape only). See it on youtube.
Nijinsky was choreographer.

No season announcement video this year?
exotically sensual - intrinsically French
Do you have full length of this video? or are you guys selling it?
Did Meyer really quit BPO to join Abbado's Lucerne Orchestra??
Sounds so french.
cierto!
bien entendu!
*where's my pillow...*
They're great, but Rattle (mostly), Abaddo, and perhaps Karajan have a part in it.
