Great reaction y’all! Neil actually used to play with matched grip until right before this album Test for Echo! He decided in the mid 90’s, he wasn’t feeling loose enough. So after 20 yrs of being one of the best drummers in the world, he thought he could do better and started studying with the jazz drummer Freddie Gruber! After about a year he totally reinvented his style and played traditional from then on! RESPECT!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
Neil occasionally used traditional grip throughout his career with Rush. You can see it on the 1981 Exit..Stage Left video of Xanadu, among others. In most cases Rush's live performance is nearly identical to the studio version.
Thanks for the Rush reaction! I was fortunate enough to see their final performance at the Los Angeles Forum (now Kia Forum). An awesome band live. Thanks for appreciating their style of music❤
Was a huge Yes, LedZepplin, Uriah Heep and Genesis fan….prog rock, but life kicked in, I got married, had kids etc…and damn, just missed Rush! Never saw 😢….my bad. These 3 guys make alot of music! Better late than never I guess….
Ged, always, "loaded himself up." He needed to in the near future (from the time that this album was recorded). He wasn't playing keyboards NEARLY as much, here, so he didn't use the bass pedals often [He doesn't on "Natural Science"!] ...but throughout the '80s & '90s, he played Taurus bass pedals while he was playing keyboard, with his hands AND (of course!) singing. Rush were a band who, unlike MANY others: THOUGHT about HOW they would play things, live, while they were conceiving them & recording them, in the studio,. Obviously, they could layer, double, etc., while recording ...BUT; when you bring that to a live audience??? How are you going to make it sound "the same" (or, at least "acceptably similar?"!). RUSH always thought about that and wrote and arranged their parts so that: they COULD do that; AS a trio!; WITHOUT additional instrumentalists (which, as you know, was and is a common thing, for bands who have multiple, layered parts or sounds, etc.!) added/needed. This is another reason that they were so lauded (sometimes: OVERmuch!!) and respected by their fans: they didn't "cheat" anyone. They gave you more than you were expecting and never brought attention to it. It wasn't like: "-Yo! ...Check-out what I'm doing here!!!!" No. It was: "Does this sound right, to you? Good. -....Moving forward. .... ...let's dig this together, peeps... You vibin' with me??... All right!...." ---Of course, "Natural Science" was, more of, the "fans who want 'Hemispheres, II' will want this" track song ...while they [the band] were, already, breaking into an area they had no, real, brook with, earlier: radio friendly material. -Which started, definitely, with THIS album and with: "The Spirit Of Radio" ! --expanding VOLUMINOUSLY, with the follow-up: Moving Pictures and "Limelight" and "Tom Sawyer" ...and, then the SIGNALS album, on the back of that ("Subdivisions", "New World Man" ...maybe: "The Analog Kid" - etc.!).

They hadn't played that song in quite a while and then pulled it out of the archives about this time. Afterward, it popped up quite a bit. Alex said it was one of his favorite ones to play live. It was always a fan favorite!
Gotta say with Rush, not only do you get an amazing musical experience, but if you follow along, you get some of the best lyrics a musician has ever written. In light of the movie in theaters, I need to recommend "Manhattan Project". For that one especially, have the lyrics ready! :)
Neil did play traditional when he was young he switched back and fourth between traditional and Match grip his childhood drum teacher taught him Traditional , in mid life he took more lessons with Jazz great Peter Erkine And master teacher Freddy Grubber , even though he was considered a accomplished drummer he never stopped learning
Live Rush backing it up ... But the studio version is a real dreamscape with it turned up, curtains closed, a bowl or five... But Rush is the best band live in concert. Unfair to other bands perhaps, but Rush concerts up to Power Windows were something beyond words so amazing.
Neil, only, started using trad. grip (and, really: "split-grip" or "mixed-grip" -I forget what it's called, most commonly🤷-apologies-), sometimes; later in his career. He began to study jazz in the early '90s for the first time and "learned to swing" (which, yes: he NEVER did in the '70s or '80s!). It didn't really suit his style! ...BUT it gave him a new perspective on playing and approach! ...so, yes: he would alternate ...and I don't know what specific periods he preferred or employed "mixed-grip" (or whatever you call that🤷🤷: one underhand, one overhand). [I am not that devoted a "Neil-head" that I know, "to the day,"🙄🤦 what he was doing or thinking (and there, definitely, ARE guys like that out there!!)]. ...but it was not something (as you, yourself, noticed-and mentioned) that he did for a long period of his career. It was a later development.
With Rush...even songs that are not my favorite, are *still* a masterclass in composition, production, polyrhythm, creativity, taking risks and chances, technical skills, erudite concepts, and professionalism. These guys are second to none...
My understanding of Neil Peart's technique is limited, to say the least, but if memory serves, he played matched grip until he did a tribute for Buddy Rich called "Burning for Buddy." Since Buddy Rich played traditional grip, he felt inspired to learn it as well.
Rush at their best ..... my top 2 songs Cygnus & NS . The more prog RUSH went, the more they stole my heart & mind ..... then seeing them live ..... my soul. I will miss them having seen them so many times since 1978. Neil's death still hasn't sunk in. Don't think it ever will. He breathes through the music & occupies me with his beauty as a person even though I never met him. Thank you fellas for bringing this classic back once again.
Thank You guys for getting back to Rush. Throughout the years they touched on many genres. Rock, Metal, Prog, Ska, New Wave, Pop and grunge, and somehow stayed popular through all their changes. I will be curious to see what you think of their synth era tunes. Subdivisons is a great one from that era.
Neil is almost always all business when he's behind his kit. These guys were my first concert in '81 at age 13. Doobies just getting passed down the row and another one comes right back. Damn, I was high!! 🤘🏻Long Live Neil Peart🤘🏻❤

Neil had only recently at this point changed his attack on the drums. Learning traditional grip from jazz percussionist Freddie Gruber. So good eye on you guys noticing. GREAT reaction!!!!
Apparently, Neil Peart would switch his left hand grasp between a traditional hold on the stick, left palm up, right palm down, and the other being both palms down. That takes skill. R.I.P. Neil

I was at this very show in Toronto, in fact, this was my first Rush show!! (and not to be the last) I distinctly remember when this song was played - talk about blown away! Indeed, the sound these 3 make (with no backing tracks, extra touring musicians, etc.) - everything you hear is played LIVE! Multitasking at it's absolute finest - and insanely tight. The transitions, doesn't matter what song, is seamless & spot on. This same concert was the first time they played 2112 in entirety - to end the first half of the show (there was no opener, it was 3 hours of Rush!) - atmosphere was perfect. Hot summer night, breeze off Lake Ontario, sweet smells in the air, and 3 hometown boys rocking our socks off! This was a special night! Cheers.

Well, if he said so okay, not to my ears though. I guess the dropped second guitar solo is part of what he refers to as stilted and I strongly disagree.

I love the title of this song. There has been an ongoing divisive argument between Science and Nature, and even Creation vs Evolution. It's all so silly. IT'S ALL THE SAME THING! It is Nature and natural. The arguments will continue, and that's natural and science. Humans are silly creatures sometimes. We must laugh at ourselves.
