For some weird reason in my country (Portugal), at the beginning of COVID, people started buying toilet paper like crazy, to a point where supermarkets had to limit how much you could buy, this is even worse when you realize that bidets are mandatory by law in Portuguese bathrooms.

The shortages began when people wanted an extra package in case they got stuck at home sick or in lock-down. Just half the customers taking an extra pack of rolls was enough to wipe out not just the shelf-stock, but the whole-sale and regional stocks as well. That is when the "hoarding" began, the Just-in-time system failing to keep the stores supplied.

While I totally agree with the pointlessness of using paper to clean bungholes when better options exist there are some misunderstandings here.
The reference to "virgin fibers' in the context of paper production is presented in a very misleading manner. The mistaken assumption made here is that you seem to believe that this references to the often misused similar term "virgin forests".
What paper manufacturers are referring to when they admit to the overwhelming majority of source material as being 'virgin fibers" is NOT referring to the denuding of old growth so-called 'virgin forests". Not at all.
What they are admitting is that they grow trees for paper. Grow. As in a crop. Grown specifically for the purpose of making paper. Over 90% in fact of the pulp used in the production of paper products in North America comes from tree farms. Farms (and thereby trees) that wouldn't exist if we didn't use them to make paper. Just like potatoes. We grow them because we use them. If we didn't like tasty potatoes, we wouldn't grow them. And no one complains about saving "virgin potatoes' do they? This whole "virgin" thing is just clever language designed to make you care about something. And we should care about the environment of course. But paper is NOT a worrisome problem for forestation in North America.
The other 10% This is recycled materials, both directly from waste management efforts and as recycled waste fibers from other timber sources. Recycling paper is a nasty process that also leads to increased use of PFAS chemicals and is NOT carbon neutral. Recycling paper is perhaps one of the DUMBEST things to recycle, especially as it is a biodegradable resource. The mistaken belief that merely tossing paper in a landfill is a bad thing comes down to the decades-old idea leaned into by the media in the 1980's but never explicitly said, that we were running out of landfill space. We DEFINITELY are not. What we are running out of is the will to increase landfills for several rather stupid reasons. The first is the weirdest. NIMBY, What is NIMBY? Not In My Back Yard. Just like we need and yet cannot figure out sustainable cheap housing, we cannot figure out landfills. And it's entirely a manufactured problem. Just like we don't want to be around poor people, we don't want to be near landfills. How enlightened of us! :P Our population could quadruple today and we'd STILL have thousands of years worth of available space for landfills. What we lack is the willpower to build them. We have more prisons than anywhere on earth, but that's an easy concept to sell to an easily scared and manipulated public. We can build prisons but not landfills? What are our priorities???
Ironically our overwhelming focus in North America on protecting old-growth forests created this necessity, as well as the colossal misunderstanding about how recycling paper is a good thing when it is anything but. This has also led unfortunately to our having to IMPORT structural wood more and more from other countries, despite the fact we have way more forests than most people think. Structural wood needs far longer growth cycles than wood grown for pulp production and therefore is a more difficult (by orders of magnitude) a product to successfully farm as a monoculture. Old-growth forests are heavily restricted and regulated by the Department of The Interior and over the last century this has led to the collapse (to the tune of 90 plus percent) of the timber industry. We did a great job of saving trees already. Almost too good of a job.
This is when looked at soberly, an example of our focus on environmental protection simply becoming a way of outsourcing our responsibility to manage resources here to other countries. Much like recycling in North America has done with the "plastic problem". We don't recycle anymore because it is a good idea. Some things ARE a good idea to recycle, but most are not. Today we recycle because the government decided to incentivise recycling with ever increasing billions in private subsidies to almost exclusively private enterprises that only honestly recycle because those guaranteed subsidies make it profitable and NOT because of any focus on actually saving the environment. Actually doing science is a much harder challenge than "throw money at the problem and let capitalism fix it". We have many decades of experience with how disastrous that idea has been.
We have so successfully managed trees as a crop in North America that there is not only a negligible to zero effect on forestation here we, in fact, have MORE forested acreage in North America today than we did 150 years ago.
Let me state this again. Slowly. So everyone can grasp this. We have more forests, and therefore more trees, then we had at the end of the civil war. People need to understand their history well, and understand how hardcore the entire planet went into burning down trees to get potassium for fertilizer in the 19th century.
It takes a bit of digging but Clemson University did a study about this issue (and the often misunderstood nature and downsides of recycling) 30 years ago. If anything timber as a crop has only increased the acreage of forestation since then.
This doesn't make toilet paper any less of a stupid idea. But it's important to get the details correct. You cannot solve problems without first understanding them. And understand most of all, you can't explain how to solve them in even a lengthy post like this one. People want simple answers to complex problems. That isn't how either problems or answers actually work.

I mean, using timber for long term construction is generally pretty silly especially with how many issues america has with tornadoes and house fires, I say this as someone from portugal, a country where people are generally poorer, sitting in a home of foot-thick concrete brick walls, its sturdier, requires no maintenance (unless you get hit with a massively strong earthquake, this is a geologically active area with minor earthquakes being rather common, and its rare to see even minor cracks in the walls of any home less than 80 years old), and especially in the hotter states (texas, arizona, etc), when combined with stone/tile floors in some areas would mean that AC is not necessary (trust me, it can be 40c outside and the home won't go over 25c if you keep the windows shut) the thermal mass also means that heat is better maintained through the winter even with pretty harsh fluctuations outside.

Thanks for this comment, I was unsure about this. I've seen bidet in all the bathrooms in the UAE when I visited, but I've ever since tried to understand how do they dry themselves? There is no special "bidet towels" in the bathrooms or hotel rooms, so how does this work! Do you simply spay yourselves clean with the hand attachment and then wipe again with toilet paper till you are dry? Does this not need a lot of paper to cover your but area (and since TP that is wet tend to deteriate quickly). Also how do you know you are "clean" or do you guess you have sprayed enough! I want to start using a bidet but I can't understand how to use it. Since its a taboo type topic, you don't find any "real life" examples out there. Only people also guessing what is done 😢

@@bernarddt I'm not familiar with customs in the UAE. I do think the handheld wand type of bidet is the most popular in mid-east countries. Whereas here in the U.S. the integrated toilet seat bidet has become most popular. I've used both, but since I'm a guy who lives alone, I prefer the seat mounted type. If I were a female, I might prefer the wand type because you can spray front-to-back direction, which is more hygienic for them.
As far as knowing when you are clean? I've learned to go slow and methodical. Start with low pressure and wiggle around a bit to cover a wider area. Then turn up the pressure to power wash nooks and crannies. Then back down to a low flow for a final rinse. I use 4 folded sheets of TP to pat dry. If I notice any spots of "residue" on the TP, then I repeat the whole process. But frankly after some practice, I seldom have to do a repeat rinse.
If I had the space and in-unit laundry, I'd probably use washable towels instead of TP. But alas, my tiny condo bathroom just doesn't have floor space for the extra bins.

This video has piqued my interest in bidets as well, but I’m not sold on the towels being all that much more environmentally friendly than TP. How much irrigation water was used to grow the cotton and make the towel? How many times did the cotton travel around the world before it got to your house? How much water does your washing machine indirectly add to each flush when you wash the towels? How much PFAS comes with the towel and how much are you adding in to the world from the laundry detergent used to wash the towels? In BC your TP doesn’t travel very far from tree to home. The towels look pretty cheaply made, how many washes can you get before they’re replaced? I guess I’m thinking bidet + TP might be the better option than bidet plus towel.

When we ran out of TP during Covid, I grabbed 12 large packs of Walmart's cheapest washcloth bundles. Until you mentioned how 1 roll of TP equaled 37 gallons of water... I had been feeling guilty for how it takes me 20 gallons per load to get these alternatives clean. You realize that the 37 gallons of water used for the toilet paper don't just disappear off the face of the planet. The problem with toilet paper is that the sheets have gotten smaller and smaller. You can hardly wipe a gnat's ass with it, it's so small. Also, here, in the UK, there's no way to easily compare different packs of paper as there are no regulations on it apart from those that apply to any product being sold, such as safe to use. So, the rolls in one brand of paper may be more loosely wound and/or the diameter of the cardboard tube in the centre is bigger. The paper may be two-ply or three-ply but how thick are the plies? Then, factor in the sheet size. How rough is the paper? You don't want it like sandpaper but if it's too smooth it just smears the poop around.

As a woman, I've always feared bidets because I'm worried about the water jet pushing fecal matter and bacteria toward the front and causing e.coli-based UTIs (I'm speaking from the experience of having gotten more than one UTI over the years from infrared sensor toilets flushing unexpectedly while I was still seated). I feel like a bidet would just make me want to jump in the shower immediately as a precaution, which I can't do if I have to pitch a log right before needing to run off to work. Been using bidet 8 years, no UTIs. Having said that ... if the water flow direction is a concern for you, there are models that the water spout is placed at the front of the toilet, and there are models that come with a hand-held sprayer. You can adjust the strength of the water flow, too. I used a rear spout model for 6 years (a cheap, seat-mounted one) and when that finally broke 2 years ago, I upgraded to a "proper" porcelain bidet, replacing my 1976 toilet (that used like 2 or 3 gallons a flush!) in the process. Having used the rear spout model for 6 years, it took me a few weeks to get used to the front spout model. I do like it, but sometimes feel like the rear spout did a better cleaning job. Probably in my head ;) Oh - my water bill went down about $11 a month getting rid of that ancient 1976 toilet! Bidet paid for itself already! Oh and I've had ZERO plumbing issues in 8 years, too! not one clogged toilet in 8 years! Side note: There's research indicating bidets are much more likely to *reduce* the incidence of UTIs than cause them.

As an American, I was so weirded out by the idea of bidets for the longest time. Spraying water up there and getting all soaked felt off after using toilet paper for years.
Then eventually got a cheap attachment after hearing someone rave about them over and over. I figured you know what, for like 20-30$ I'll take a chance.
Fast forward a few years and I can't believe I've gone so long without one. When I go on vacations for any prolonged period of time, I actually bring a cheap one to install and uninstall in the room's bathroom so I don't have to be without it and fully enjoy the time away.
If anyone reading this is also on the fence about bidets, please give it a shot. Tushy is a big brand that I'm sure works great, but there are also cheaper options that work. I have 3 that collectively cost less than 100$. I went from being weirded out by the idea and thinking I'd never use one to only wanting to use bathrooms that have them, they truly are an amazing addition to any home.
PLUS even without getting the reusable towels, I go through so much LESS toilet paper. So even with still using toilet paper, in the long run it pays for itself on saved toilet paper cost.

I'm of Indian background, so my grandparents growing up used lotahs, a pot with a spout. In their apartment in Bombay now Mumbai they had a pull chain toilet and a spay next to the toilet and old washcloths after you cleaned yourself to dry with. Before we bought this house we used baby wipes and threw them away. When buying this house we installed a bidet.

Yes, the Great Toilet Paper Shortage finally pushed me to a bidet. I had been considering it in the past but that's what made me finally cross the line. It's a weird concept for sure, but once you get used to it it's great. I would 100% buy an all in one bidet toilet if I owned a house, but I'm glad attachments are an option. We spent a pretty $ on ours for hot water and pressure sensitivity and a stainless steel nozzle for cleanliness (we had a plastic nozzle before and um, ew). Plus as a bonus, heated seat!!

I think we need to double check the stat that the average American uses 141 rolls of toilet paper per year. That’s a roll every 2.6 days, a four pack every 10 days, or 12 rolls a month. Unless my usage is waaaay lower than the average, there’s no way this is true. My wife and I use less than roll a week. Not counting poops at work, of course. But I own my business and I buy the TP for the office, so i think my usage is still less than 1 roll per week. I guess if the average American is buying very small rolls, it might be possible. We buy bigger rolls. Maybe the average household goes through this much. But that’s more people.

Hemorrhoids have gone done, feeling very clean, and saved money from buying TP (though I still have it around for visitors). Just love washing over wiping. Think about it, if your dog took a dump on your hand, would you smear it off with a dry napkin, or would wash your hand with running water? Would love to get a bidet seat/attachment someday though. One thing to note is that the toxicity is not incidental - the things that make it bad are what make it useful, particularly that they're tough, slippery, and highly temperature resistant. It's a fundamental ingredient to make PTFE / Teflon. And the fallout recently with some lawsuits have big implications.

As someone who lived in SE Asia for a bit, when I came back, I sounded like someone who recently left Scientology and was trying to get everyone to come with me. Look at the world outside! They don't have traditional French bidets, or fancy toilet attachments like Toto, or other, more luxury, Japanese built in booty sprayers. They have the most effective, wonderful device colloquially known as the BUM GUN.
