@jlf120 the 5C scratched really bad though. That is my biggest gripe with the design, polycarbonate looks great for 5 minutes out the box then immediately starts scratcging
IPhone 13 Pro Max. Never even considered an upgrade and it actually still performs and feels like a premium IPhone in a steel frame. Applecare the battery and it's a new iPhone again
The 11 Pro really was that sweet spot between innovation and reliability. Fast charging brick in the box was the last time Apple actually gave us everything we needed
I have to agree, for its time at least 11 Pro felt like the best iPhone. It was an extremely well refined version of the innovative iPhone X. Still have my one in a draw, will likely never sell it
I recently upgraded from an 11 Pro Max to a 17 Pro Max. I’ll miss the 11 Pro Max, as that thing was such a beast! I bought it used from a friend of mine in Montana back in March of 2021 for only $700 and I used it all the way up until last week!
I use the iPhone air, I am typically a pro user but I absolutely hate the 6.9 size of the PM, and the 6.3 is way too small, 6.5 on the air is perfect, but the air also reminds me of the iPhone 11PM and XSMax, which were my favorite iPhones. The biggest thing for me is the form factor of the air, the physical experience makes up for the lack of two speakers/lenses.
Same here. The Air makes it impossible to go back to these heavy brick phones. The screen size is perfect, weight is on par with a 6S and the battery life is actually better than a 15 Pro! What I can’t understand is where all these people come up with this arbitrary requirement that a phone must weigh a ton and have 3-4 cameras in it to be a quality device that’s incredibly comfortable and reliable? If I want to take videos or photos I’ll use my camera. Not my phone. One speaker means absolutely NOTHING when I’m either wearing iPods or connected to a JBL Flip. It just seems to me all their reasons for bashing the Air as a gimmick don’t even make sense. But….guess I shouldn’t be surprised. His asinine critiques are probably typical for a small child’s view of the world.
While the X was revolutionary, the XS and especially the XS Max were a much-needed update in terms of performance, and perhaps that's why they got 2 more iOS version updates. The cameras were a huge improvement as well. The gold XS looks like a piece of jewelry. The XS series is an easy B tier, being a refinement in a variety of aspects while letting that beautiful design live for another whole year.
For the time iPhone 4 blew everything away. We got so many iconic mobile games on the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 was so good that gaming companies thought consoles weren't gonna be around for much longer. Today the iPhone 17 is the best iPhone because you don't need any or the pro features and going standard 17 saves you money. But today apples competition has caught up and taken over in many ways.
@MISCHIVUSYep. We will see people in 5 years saying "still using the iphone 17", will still be as fast as the newest iPhone. Even if they bring 240hz the 120hz is still plenty and is the right balance because we need great battery life.
I had an iPhone X and gave it to my mom, and she used it for a number of years. I still love the look and feel of that phone. I will say I am hoping for a fold so that iOS will maybe get multitasking apps and such that android has had forever.
while i really like what apple did with the base 17, im 100% sure that the only reason it got praised sm is bc apple set the standard for the base iphones so low that suddenly it's so great an 800 dollar phone is now performing relatively as expected of its price point.
@internetguy7319My case in point. I specifically said "relatively" since the value perception of the base iPhone 17 is highly dependent on the country's mobile phone market. You're right that in the US, it's definitely an amazing value product but in most parts of Asia, that's most definitely not the case.
1:03:16 I daily drove the SE Gen1 early this year for about 2 weeks and it worked perfectly fine. Mine has a new battery and it ran social media apps very well. I could actually use it as my primary if my country hadn't restricted payment apps to iOS 17 and above. They all still install in the device but show a pop up when I try to set them up regarding the same. Otherwise, there wasn't a single moment where I missed a modern device (except legibility under the sun). It got a security update even in 2025 (all iOS 15 devices did I guess).
The 6s lasted me till 2023 it’s crazy how long I had it and it was still getting updates I finally upgraded last year but even with the newer iPhone 17 pro which will be replacing my current iPhone 16 the 6s still my all time favorite
I was 13 when the iPhone 4 came out. I remember how cool it was and how cool people looked with them. By age fourteen, everyone who was somebody had an IPhone 4. It was heavy, and solid, and glossy, it was absolutely beautiful. I remember people cracking the back glass and filling it with marker ink to make a rainbow back. Those were the days.
I was 19 years old when I got my first smartphone which was an iPhone 4 and I remember how heavy that one was. The battery life was terrible and the one I had was one my dad used for a couple years beforehand which also the sounds didn’t work on it (except for calls and alarms) and the WiFi didn’t work. My first true iPhone experience that I got brand new was the 5S, same storage with 16 GB and I remember how cool it was just to have Touch ID playing around with that. The 6 was good for a storage upgrade for me, 32 GB but it felt like a better version of the 5S. When I upgraded to the 8 Plus with 128 GB, that felt as if I had my first major upgrade. I had that one for 4 years until I got an even bigger upgrade to the base 15 (128 GB) that I had for 10 months, had to upgrade storage so I figured to get the bigger 15 Plus with 256 GB. I’ve always been an iPhone person with smartphones and I can’t see myself ever changing that. I want to keep this 15 Plus for 5-6 years and then go for a Pro Max for my next iPhone
17 pro series is the first iPhone lineup where I hate every color, I got the silver one and it’s basically identicle looking to my cheap $299 iPad 10.9
17:35 The weird thing about the 7 is that iPad 6 with the same cpu and ram got to iOS 17 and iPad 7 with only one gb more (than non-plus iPhone) all the way to 18 (and surprisingly it works very much decently on it)
Using a 15 pro right now so I’m obviously biased, but I agree. The 15 pro is one of those iPhones that looks really meh on paper, but it really ties together a lot of loose ends that just makes it feel really well balanced and evolved. The lighter titanium with a grippier design, usb c, action button, improved telephoto, LOGG recording-they went a little hard on the titanium marketing but it’s legit just A tier imo. Not S tier but certainly not mediocre For reference I’ve used a 12 mini, 12 pro max and 14 pro max in the past
@beigegeckothermals!!!! thermals!!! literally look at any test the thermals make it sustain performance so much better. the biggest flaw of my 16p is that it gets hot running the youtube app let alone demanding games
Hi Josh! I absolutely love your videos. Long time follower. I have never commented yet. I really appreciate the great iPhone context you put out. I am really excited to binge watch this. - Love from a California attorney! - James Arrasmith, President and Chief Legal Counsel at The Law Offices of James L. Arrasmith
59:41 I'm currently using an 11 Pro Max just for the rounded sides and the battery lasts just fine even at 76% BH. The problem instead is the g due to the degraded battery I guess 'cause my XS Max running the same iOS 18.7.2 works just fine as it got a fresh new one just 2 years ago.
I certainly would appreciate a smaller phone still. BUT. Hear me out. The 12 and 13 mini still weren't one-headed for someone with smaller hands. So like re-release a mini but in the original SE form (I know technically it's the 5 size). I LOVED the original SE.
It’s a crime that this doesn’t have more views. I see how hard you worked on this, and I commend you. Edit: my favorite iPhone has gotta be the 13 mini. I wish we could have a newer iPhone in that size…
I’ve been an iPhone user since 2009, and typically skipped a couple years between upgrades. I used an iPhone 8+ for five years! So that was my favorite phone. Currently, I’d say my favorites are the 16PM & 17 in lavender. Best thing about the PM: Battery lasts forever, gorgeous titanium & glass build….Best thing about 17: New front camera sensor / portability, and… it’s my fave color.
¿Anyone else noticed that this guy uses Sonic music in a lot of his videos? Icecap zone in the Samsung S8 video, Angel Island in the iPhone 17 pro video, and even a sonic holder in the Samsung S5 video
My last iPhone before an extended break from cell phones entirely was the iPhone 4! The next time I got a phone was years later when I got an iPhone 14 Plus. I then upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro Max (258GB) and that’s where I sit today. I’m still really happy with mine. The stereo speakers was my main reason for upgrading from the 14 plus but I found the battery life was also a game changer and by the time I purchased my 15 they had already addressed the overheating complaints. It’s been a great phone for me. More than I needed in fact.
How is the 16 Pro max in D tier with the 4S? You smashed the 4S for some significant issues but said the 16 Pro max was a fantastic phone, just boring. Recalibration needed!
The iPhone I’ve owned the longest was the 11 pro max green and I never needed to upgrade because it was such a beast phone it will always be my favorite iPhone of all time. I currently now own the iPhone air and so far so good
I went from a 14 plus that i had for about over a year to a orange 17 pro max that i got at launch as a early birthday gift, i miss my first iPhone that i had back in 2016 (the 6)
i truely believe the iphone Air just exists so apple has an „Air“ variant of every mobile device being it the macbook air, ipad air, and now iphone air. i hope they continue the air but with better battery somehow
Before I watched this video, I'm gonna say that easily the base iPhone 17 is the best modern iPhone since the 14 series. Before that it was probably the 13 or 13 mini. For classic iPhones the original SE is the goat.
my 11 pro max is legit on deaths door, smashed back glass, shattared front screen, but still boots and works absolutley fine, the camera quality is still VERY good and i think ill fix it next year :)
I've used the 4s, 5, 5s, 6s, 8, 10, 12pro, 14pro, 15pro and now the Air. All time fav phones are the 5, 10 and now the Air. The Air isn't a phone I asked for but I am glad that Apple made it. As someone who uses my phone as a phone, it is perfect for me. That thin design makes everyone think the battery would be bad but its better than my 14 pro or my 15 pro. Even the peeps at reddit have been shocked by how good it is. Definitely my fav comfortable phone since the X and prior. So easy to hold and move around in my hand, easy to slide in and out of my jeans pocket and also, thanks to the light weight, it doesn't pull my pants down haha. Anyway, it my not be perfect but its definitely the best phone for me 👍
Have 16 pro max and I can understand why I't got a D small upgrade over the last but its still a great phone and I upgraded from the X so I'm still happy with it
@Pulverizer2000I just got the phone this year brand new from my carrier so I’m probably gonna have more battery life than most. ( edit here.. you’re also correct I barely use it
Never had it, but the 7 deserved more credit. You didn’t need to get the Plus anymore to have OIS, it was the first iPhone with stereo speakers and water resistance, and a home button that never ever wore out.
They should bring the mini back. I don't really know why it didn't sell more, maybe the discount wasn't big enough to justify not just going for the base model, but the people I know who love that smaller form factor, are begging for the series to come back. I don't really like iPhones these days, but I have to admit, the minis do work well. They feel quintessentially iPhone, just from being an older apple user. Compact phones need a comeback in general, imo.
Price and battery life was a flaw for the minis imo but generally speaking, I don’t think many people found mini versions appealing contributing to low sales
Yes! iPhone 5s! I agree. It was my first smartphone and by far my favorite. Thank you for the AMAZING review. Understandably, to my knowledge, you can't really use the 5s safely any longer but is there any chance for the SE (2016?) (and also my second iPhone that I am hoping to pass on to my kiddo). Thoughts?
I always enjoy hearing other folks perspectives about tech history. I remember distinctively how hated the iOS 7 redesign was, and while I still prefer the old school Skeuomorphic design, I've grown to appreciate what Apple's goal was. As a digital graphic designer and artist, what I found rather shocking at the time is that iOS 7 had simpler designs, so I never understood why it destroyed performance on iPhone 4. Generally, more complex raster and vector graphics are more intensive in hardware whereas more simple, flat designs are less intense. Was it the transparency effects? I still don't really get it. Overall, as an Android user who has used Apple products from time to time, my biggest hangup with any iPhone has been the lack of side loading capabilities, though it seems like Android is going down the same path 💀
Despite not being my favourites since I never really owned them, these iPhone models are ones I was really hyped for and wanted: iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11 Pro. The iPhone 11s were the last iPhones I was actually interested in and lost interest for new iPhone models after the iPhone 12
I've had 5 or 6 different iphones over the years, and the 13 pro was the only one that was completely flawless for my entire ownership of it. It was literally perfect. No overheating, no slowness, battery was great the whole 2 years i had it, camera was great, it was perfect. I have the iphone 15 pro now and while I think it is objectively better because of like dynamic island action button and usb c, I have had a fair bit of issues with it, like some issues with the screen and overheating issues that were so bad that I had to get a second 15 pro not even a year into owning the first one. My current iphone 15 pro is fine, it doesnt overheat, but I kind of miss the stability of the 13 pro, not having to worry about any sort of issues popping up. I will also add that my iphone 5s was also almost perfect functionally, but the screens on those were always way too small and 16gb storage was unacceptable even in 2013 (and especially in 2016 when I had it), so I still think the 13 pro was better.
Iphone Xr It was the best experience for me. I had four iPhone 13s. The fifth one is an iPhone 7. It was the XP that made me happiest. I sold it in a hurry because of the war, thinking Apple would block iPhones in Russia. But no. The only problem is downloading banking apps and Apple pay. Xr was the most comfort phone for me, I remember it on iOS 15, it was very fast and most importantly stable. 0 heating, 6 hours of screen time and everything worked just great.
It's bs saying that the removal of charging bricks and headphones did nothing for the environment. You even said it yourself. You're still using the one you got with your 11 Pro, so how wouldn't it be a waste if you got one with each new iPhone? 58:45
“If you give people a useful charger, it’s like they will be used”. I agree with your sentiment. However, most people don’t GAF unfortunately and Apple took advantage of that
I think any of the SE versions. They were fast for the time small and reliable. The were reasonably priced on contract and did everything to a decent standard for the time. Most people just want a phone that works well. We aren’t bothered about fancy bells and whistles so long as it does what it’s supposed to and the SE 1 2 and 3 did that
For the final three: I would’ve said iPhone 4s, instead of the four, because it was twice as fast and just better overall, especially no network issues.

My favorite iPhone design is the 5/5s/SE (1st gen).
Got a 1st SE with a broken motherboard purely to frame and put on my bedroom wall 😂
understandable @JerichoFoster
@jlf120 the 5C scratched really bad though. That is my biggest gripe with the design, polycarbonate looks great for 5 minutes out the box then immediately starts scratcging
Agreed!
that was my last iPhone. I switched to galaxy / pixel and am finally coming back to iPhone I'm gonna get a 15 pro.
iPhone 13 Pro. It felt complete.
I sure do love all the downsides of the 14 Pro design without any of the benefits.
13 pro max imo. The battery life on that was beastly. Also for some reason mine was like unbreakable. I put that phone through hell
I am still using an iPhone 13 pro max, and it still has a better camera than the new iPhone 17, 16e, and 17Air. It really was something.
IPhone 13 Pro Max.
Never even considered an upgrade and it actually still performs and feels like a premium IPhone in a steel frame.

Should do the same type of video with iPod's
The iPhone 17 should be the best iPhone ever. Didn’t move the needle but offered the best value and has absolutely zero flaws. Its perfect
It’s gonna slay in the used market

Your videos are the few videos I’ll watch all the way through without skipping. Love this.
I'm so old that I owned an iPhone 5S in 2013. It had a small form factor and Touch ID was revolutionary for its time.
I was expecting this video in 2027 when the iPhone turns 20. Guess you’ll revisit it in 2 years.

In my opinion, the first iPhone SE was great. Updated internals with the iPhone 5S’ clean design.
I've still got an original SE that I've got out of my drawer tonight and it's charging up. Beautiful design.
similar to your iPhone peak video, but this time with iPhone 17...
I absolutely love these documentary-style videos!

this was a joy to watch, thank you

@j0nnyismit was still good for when it came out❤

I already heard people calling it the iPhone 17 Air and not just the iPhone Air
Wish we got a newer generation mini phone would love to have bought one if it existed
23:21… My phone will die even when I don’t use it all day😅
I’ve never heard of an iPhone an Apple phone until about2018😂
My first’s ever iPhone was 3G and now I got iPhone 16 pro Max and in 90s at school we hads Apple Computer and Apple never let me down ?
Im going in with a guess without watching, it will ether be the iPhone 11 or 13 series, probably the 13
13 pro max was my fav
Man put the 15 Pro and 17 Pro in B tier is absolutely diabolical.
Both offer some of the most significant upgrades over the previous year model.
Using a 15 pro right now so I’m obviously biased, but I agree. The 15 pro is one of those iPhones that looks really meh on paper, but it really ties together a lot of loose ends that just makes it feel really well balanced and evolved. For reference I’ve used a 12 mini, 12 pro max and 14 pro max in the past
17 pro’s build quality and lack of any distinctive features warrant that placement. It’s an overpriced boring phone that chips at the edges
Yeah on paper it’s not a big upgrade from the 14 pro but when actually using both the 15 pro did bring some key upgrades the 14 pro also can’t do AI
The 15 Pro did start off with thermal issues to be fair
@beigegeckothermals!!!! thermals!!! literally look at any test the thermals make it sustain performance so much better. the biggest flaw of my 16p is that it gets hot running the youtube app let alone demanding games

5S is 2nd best at this point. The iPhone X remains in 1st place since the launch in 2017 celebrating the 10th anniversary of the iPhone.

I think the iPhone Air is them showing what they'd like the regular iPhone to look like by say..2030 maybe?
iphone 4s, 6/6s, iphone 13 pro
My 8 year old still uses my old XR in product red. Still holding up in 2026 at 87% battery life. Running iOS 18. Rock solid
IPhone 13 mini. Deal with it. 😂
16:12 🤣🤣🤣
i truely believe the iphone Air just exists so apple has an „Air“ variant of every mobile device being it the macbook air, ipad air, and now iphone air. i hope they continue the air but with better battery somehow
postmates and uber work for you
The 17 pro is incredible for video my god Ivebeen so impressed with mine
Could you also do the best iOS version or release version? I think this might be just as interesting
People will just say iOS 6 and how Apple went downhill after iOS 7 etc
i absolutely loved the XS, it polished off the stuff from the x, it had a great size, and it was so high tech at the time
Before I watched this video, I'm gonna say that easily the base iPhone 17 is the best modern iPhone since the 14 series.
Hopefully you’re taking it to be repaired by Apple, right?
Base iPhone 17 is the GOAT at this point. I also would say the 4S. That phone literally changed the world.
Anyway, it my not be perfect but its definitely the best phone for me 👍
Wow. This was such a great 2 hours spent. Great job at this video! ❤
Have 16 pro max and I can understand why I't got a D small upgrade over the last but its still a great phone and I upgraded from the X so I'm still happy with it
In my opinion the 15 pro has been a solid choice
No bad thermals, worst battery life
@Pulverizer2000 it varies by user but mine last about two days on a full charge
@STAYHIGHMYGUY that’s impossible unless you just barely use the device 2 hr a day
@Pulverizer2000I just got the phone this year brand new from my carrier so I’m probably gonna have more battery life than most. ( edit here.. you’re also correct I barely use it
15 pro, pro max is the peak iphone in my opinion,
Never had it, but the 7 deserved more credit.
Overall, as an Android user who has used Apple products from time to time, my biggest hangup with any iPhone has been the lack of side loading capabilities, though it seems like Android is going down the same path 💀
iphone 5 to 6 all model have awsome camera after that camera is to real tone not looks good, i used iphone 5c 5s 6 6s and now iphone 12
put two iphone airs on top of each other face to face. you know what that is? a galaxy z fold 7 😂
Is this another one of those brief retrospectives
Reeeeally stretching the definition of brief with a 2 and a half hours 😂
Other than the 17 pro to a tier and the 14 pro and air up to b tier
I agree with the list
0 heating, 6 hours of screen time and everything worked just great.
we NEED the mini iphones. I am one of the people who like small phones
iPhone 6s and XS
The 17 literally destroy the android phones this year ahhaaha
Base iPhone 17
It's bs saying that the removal of charging bricks and headphones did nothing for the environment. You even said it yourself. You're still using the one you got with your 11 Pro, so how wouldn't it be a waste if you got one with each new iPhone? 58:45
“If you give people a useful charger, it’s like they will be used”. I agree with your sentiment. However, most people don’t GAF unfortunately and Apple took advantage of that
I get your take but iPhone 17 PM is definitely unmatched period lol. How could it not be?
Aluminum body vs. Titanium body...
The iPhone XR was the best phone and came out with 5 or 7 different colors and got updated until 2025
i remember being in 6th grade and being so jealous of my classmates who had the 6/6s lol but now i have a 17 pro max lol
The iphone 13 mini. And iphone 15 pro. A baby between them would be the perfect package
i dont any idea of IPHONE never have 1 this.
Back when you’d get 30k views over the course of a whole year now 30k views in 2 months
13 mini was the best for me. Fitting tech into such a small phone is hard and sadly no one appreciates it today.
I think any of the SE versions. They were fast for the time small and reliable. The were reasonably priced on contract and did everything to a decent standard for the time. Most people just want a phone that works well. We aren’t bothered about fancy bells and whistles so long as it does what it’s supposed to and the SE 1 2 and 3 did that
The best iPhone is the iPhone 13 Pro max. I regreted trading it for the iPhone 15 plus.
Still love my iPhone 15 pro.
For the final three: I would’ve said iPhone 4s, instead of the four, because it was twice as fast and just better overall, especially no network issues.
