  • The Exorcisms of Jesus are highly celebrated but what do we know about the exorcistic rituals of his life and times. Our best insight comes from the Dead Sea Scrolls which contain a collection of exorcistic texts including a brief exorcistic manual. These texts are largely attributed to King David and may represent a now extinct tradition of Davidic Exorcism rituals. Join me as I explore the world of ancient Essene and Davidic Exorcism literature.

One thing I've read about ancient exorcism in the Bible is that song was used to exorcise a demon in some instances. When I read that, all I could think of is exorcisms evolving into exorcists having rap battles with demons. Which, I feel, is the exorcistic practice we all missed out on

Spirit instructed me to put on Norse music and Tuvan throat singing. While “dying”. So weak I had to hold onto the walls to get around my house…that wonderful music uplifted my internal spirits (fire of life) enough to scrub the mould off my bedroom walls and to heal me. It took another week or two but I did recover from that illness.

14:45 I have heard at least some Christians discussing a sort of combined system of demonology, where fallen angles/devils are one thing, and demons are a different thing, specifically the spirits of the giants in that Enochian system. But I think the last time I heard that system discussed was on Christian talk radio way back during the Satanic panic, when demons were frequently the topic of discussion.

I don't see how the dead sea scrolls should differ much from our modern translations of biblical literature. If they do drastically alter from our currently subscribed to texts -- is that not a cause for skepticism towards the dead sea scrolls' legitimacy from a doctrinal point of view? For one, I believe that if apocrypha is dismissed as belonging to a sect separate from modern day belief, then so too should the dead sea scrolls... unless there's something that I missed. Anyhoo, I am grateful for the time and effort you put into compiling together in an easily comprehensible manner the most reliable information on these historic subjects, Dr. Sledge 👍 Your scholarship does vanquish the prevalence of online quacks

Thnx for tip reading this now. I can see these symbols or objects such as cross or Japa mala have an effect as well as meditation and prayer, particularly strong emotion (although these evil forces will do anything to try and convince you otherwise). I've been seeing shadowy apparitions pretty strongly for a while now and lights, orbs or otherwise that seemed to be helping me. I watch these ghost videos also such as slapped ham bizarre bub and king frostmare channels and am learning a lot. Yesterday I distinctly heard a voice of a woman I used to know who lived in my building & passed (she did not perish while she lived here). I think her ghost must have become attached to me like a vampire for no good reason and she has become a wandering spirit or hungry ghost as I've been sensing her in my meditations. I did leave some food out as an offering but I've yet to see if that was a mistake or not. These beings are parasitical and cannot or will not connect to source (God). They instead try to steal your energy. Same thing with living people. It comes down to immorality or having an evil nature lack of integrity etc... You probably shouldn't feel sorry for them as the bible often says as they are wicked souls who linger and prey on others for sustenance instead of legitimately doing the work themselves. They get what they deserve is my perspective more or less but I still tend to be compassionate against my better judgement and usually to my own detriment. But there's a lot I could say (extrapolate) and it gets very complicated (although I think it can also be simplistic).

I deeply enjoyed this episode, and I'm sad to hear it did not reach an audience. I think it has something to do with a metamorphosis of the issue you mentioned when it came to middle age thinkers. There, a large amount of the people who seek 'mystical' knowledge tend to do it as a counter culture. Thus there is not a huge group of people seeking texts where the goal is unity with God through Jesus. Here, its even more niche due to it main appeal being those interested in defunct Jewish sects, or those who are Christen enough to look for a background of things Jesus might have drawn from. There does not seem to be a large pool of the latter, and the former is sparse enough as is. I wish people took the whole Miaphysite controversy seriously in this day and age, but most modern Christians seem to ignore the human aspects to focus wholly on the Divine. If they would at least acknowledge the other nature it would be fine, but its like the winning camp defeated itself by snuffing the human aspect in its entirety.

In light of this information, I wonder if Matthew 9:34, where the pharisees accuse Jesus of using demonic power to cast out demons, is perhaps a suggestion that Jesus's exorcistic authority was coming from a place outside of the accepted exorcistic practices of the day. I always wondered what would make the pharisees make such an accusation, but I wonder if it was simply a lack of Jewish-sanctioned precedent for his particular methods? I think another goal of that part of the gospel is to show that Jesus had far more authority over demons than any man or legendary figure before himself, hence he must be part of the demonic power structure. Anyone have any thoughts?

It seems need for exorcism has mostly passed in our day and age; is this because a singular divinity (Christianity and it's associated Divine Being(s)) has dominated the others. What other divine beings may be out there? Might they be as legitimate as the Christian one? How might history of our planet have changed if the majority had a sided a different way?

Are there other traditions of individuals invoking the “fear of God” (yirat YHVH) and the spirits (ruach) of wisdom, understanding, might, etc? Is that commonplace? These all go to Isaiah 11.1-3, don’t they? And what became the tradition of requesting the “seven gifts of the Holy Spirit” (there’s a wikipedia page on it).
Experientially, these are very powerful and can def still be mentally requested and received. Requesting the “Yirat YHVH” is indeed especially interesting-it brings in an energy and presence akin to what the sufis connect with as “baraka” (grace/blessings). It makes you want to drop your hands into a palms-upwards posture of supplication and awe. (I assume that’s what they mean by “yirat” (“fear”)).
Could definitely see how that would confer the authority and power to banish nasties. Very interesting to see the Isaiah “spirits of god” crop up in a tradition of practical usage for regular folks and not just messiahs. Very interested to know whether engaging these was widespread/commonplace.
    Thanks as always!

The more I think about it, the weirder it is there isn’t a “gospel of Jesus” or whatever. I’m not very well researched in that sort of thing, but considering everyone and their brother seems to have written one- you’d think the figure head of several religions would have left behind a larger body of work?

There is "The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ" by Nicolas Notovitch.
I'm starting to re-assess the credibility of the theory that Jesus survived the crucification and had a second career in India as the holy man 'Isa' after having been previously trained as a buddhist during his missing years. I would have considered that kookoo a few years ago but the more I learn about what bible scholars now think of the New Testament's accuracy, the less implausible it seems by comparison.
Bargaining aboard slik road trader's ships as a passenger was apparently commonly done, and the apostle Thomas set up the first church in India.

@@nathanaelsmith3553 yes. This, apart from the India speculation, is so I believe what is the opinion of the Islamic world; he was swapped out before the event, and continued to be an excorcist in other parts.
Trying to get historical geographic info out of the New Testament is difficult at best!😁
The fact that the geography and town names described matches much better with central/Southern France than it does Palestine,(and that so many figures from it seem to be buried in Southern France..) only adds fuel to that fire.
There are plenty of Hindus that are totally comfortable with a historical Jesus roaming their country. The parallels between him an a lot of Vishnu avatars, including Krishna, are pretty solid.
The stuff talked about in the bibles are still every day experiences for many in that culture.

@@hamishbartholomaeus I've heard that the earliest gospel manuscripts have no resurrection - just an empty tomb. One theory is that he was taken down before death and recovered but had to flee to the east because he was still a wanted man. Israel was on the edge of the Roman empire so crossing the adjacent county lines would have gotten him immunity and a new life. Josephus documents a man surviving crucification so it's possible. There could perhaps have been a pythonesque plot by the JPF / PFJ to fain his death and get him down early? Who knows, but I think the resurrection bit might have been made up although accounts of encounters with him after could have been real?
Buddhism was already 500 years old by Jesus' time. There was already a tradition that when a Lama dies disciples would undertake long journeys to discover his reincarnation in an infant. This child would be taken and schooled once old enough. Some people speculate that this accounts for the wise men from the east in the nativity story and Jesus' missing years.

I'm intrigued by independent scholarly perspective of Jesus as an "apocalyptic" preacher! As I understand the word colloquially? I wonder often how much of organized religion (with power as its goal, of course) has appropriated I will say and strayed from on-the-ground teachings by Jesus of Nazareth. A tangent topic for me in its own right. And dig the rigorous source titles! Will explore further the noted videos in Esoterica channel! I called it! I do know something. That there would be a great Flood? 17:15 I cannot wait for THAT story! So on mating: if it's possible then is it...natural? Like..ligers? Or is it just a cosmic power on level of "nucular" research? (Just because you can...) ...checking date today before pondering as actual the mention of the "B" dude. I'm still wary from Esoterica's April 1st... fascinating to track the names for Sheol...a ton of fascinating references here today to unpack! Epic overview journey video, Dr Sledge! Thank you!

I always wondered if nephilim wasn't the name of the fallen and not their offspring (or genetically modified abominations), since it means 'feller' and I always thought it could mean 'fallen'. Giant just never made sense. Same with several other poor or wrong translations. Neither Hallel or Ha-Yalal, as it may be, meaning what they're translated as. Phosphoros being rendered 'day star' and not what it directly translates as. Seemingly small changes that have created a very skewed narrative.
