At the time,i thought it was a bad stoppage but now i believe it was correct,Taylor was beaten up,beaten up so bad that he wasnt the same fighter ever again.People forget Chavez stopped him a lot earlier and won a lot easily in the rematch. Those 2 fights ended Taylors career,he was never the same.It was tragic, but with 6 seconds left,Chavez could've landed a fatal blow and then everyone would be criticsizing Steele for not stopping it when he did.
I never get why people say this. The sport never died, and will never die. It will always be the number one combat sport in the world. It's suffering a slump now, but every generation has a slump, and every generation produces a star to revive that slump. It's happened so many times. The star of this generation hasn't appeared yet.
+Anees Niazi You're absolutely right I feel like if GGG gets an actually good opponent that could stand toe to toe with him in the ring and gain more mainstream popularity he will be that guy if not then just wait 6 years and I guarantee the great fighter of this generation will come and bring boxing back into the spotlight like it was in the 80s and 90s
Chavez vs Taylor is hands down one of the BEST fucking fights I have EVER seen. Chavez is a piece of iron... truly the greatest Mexican boxer of ALL TIME.
I hope they can honor Taylor in some great way. Like inducting him into the boxing hall of fame, or some other great tribute to him. He deserves it, to honor his achievements despite the odds and career setbacks after Chavez.
yeah but they both choose to be there. Plus rejecting violence is like rejecting life. Its a bit like being vegetarian. Refusing to eat animals is refusing nature Life and death its all ying and yang in it?
What hurt Meldrick more than anything is that he really couldn't crack an egg at world level , as much as he hit Chavez they were all pitter patter punches. Where as Chavez broke bones with his punches. Also the myth that the fight was stopped with 2 seconds to go just isn't true, there were at least 6 seconds and he was gone.
The rules are clear boxer does not anwser the questions stop the fight because one more hit could of kill him. Actually he should of stop it earlier becasue of the damage done.
+Miguel Rodriguez Yes the referee's job is not to decide who should win the fight. His #1 priority is the safety of the fighters. He doesn't count the punches, just watch the hurtful ones & observe the fighters. I remember Kenny Bayless stopping Katsidis on his feet in the Marquez fight. His head was being plucked off by those uppercuts.
If the knockdown happened after the bell he would've been saved by the bell but there was 2 seconds left and Taylor didn't respond to the ref for whatever reason, Steele had no choice
Mexico, second best, only to The United States in boxing. Chavez the best of Mexico. Meldrick Taylor was winning the fight 3 to one (at least) going to the tenth round when things started to change in favor of Chavez. After the fight, Chavez went out night clubbing; Taylor went to the hospital for a few days and ended up with brain damage. Chavez went on to win 89 fights before his first loss. 115 fights, 107 wins, 6 losses, 2 draws; 87 Kos. A bunch of new records. Salute.
The doctor that examined Taylor afterwards inmediately sent the kid to the hospital stating that he had a facial fracture, both of his orbital bones (cheekbones) were broken, he had brain damage and it was later known that the poor guy spent two days urinating pure blood. That fight should have been stopped earlier. The prime was beaten out of Taylor
And people would argue that Taylor WAS winning the fight! He was hitting Chavez 3 to 1, but OBVIOUSLY Chavez's blows were A LOT more damaging; A LOT MORE. The evidence speaks for itself. Sometimes, just show the two fighters in the end of the fight and let people decide who the winner is, based on the evidence... as simple as that. Salute.
I always thought that the stoppage was correct. The referee has to apply the rules correctly, regardless of whether there's 2 seconds left or 2 seconds gone. Tough on Taylor perhaps, but one more Chavez punch landing in those 2 seconds could have actually killed him in the ring that night.
dude Taylor was the man , Taylor will always be my favorite boxer In Philly I remember i was 12 going to my uncle Frank's gym seeing him ,I remember my uncle Frank introduced me to him,i wish he got that title,
It was the right decision, if a ref thinks a fighter is in no position to continue after 8-10 count fights over doesn't matter it there's 5secs or 5 rounds left, not Ooooh 5secs left Ooooh just give the win too this guy
Steele panicked when Taylor didn't answer him. He did the same exact thing in the Tyson Ruddock fight. Tyson drove Ruddock back into the ropes, and Steele panicked and waved the fight off with his back towards Ruddock, and Ruddock still standing. Funny? Don King's two prized fighters: Chavez and Tyson always had Steele as the ref, especially Chavez.
Crazy really. When the fighter cannot take anymore punches or the ref counts 10, the fight is OVER! Chavez could have landed more punches with 5 seconds left on the clock. Taylor was hurt for life from that fight (and with hindsight he took more than he should when you see him now). He could not defend himself and should Steele be thinking 'there's 5 seconds, maybe he can take just a few more punches and he'll have the title, as he's worked so hard early in the fight and it work be nice for him' or should he think ' no more - this is the end of the fight' regardless of whats on the clock..
Would people be complaining if that exact situation happened with 2.30 left? Probably not and consistency is what you want from referees, it's how they do their job the best. It would of been great for him to have had the win but the ref is only there to enforce the rules and maintain the safety of the fighters. Great documentary though
People are too caught up in this nonsense about a bad stoppage. Chavez put Meldrick's lights out, he needed the ropes to slowly crawl up and didn't pay attention to the Steel's count. He was gone. Instead we should be talking about the unbelievable heart and determination Chavez displayed to score the comeback KO against a great challenger in the 12th.
Taylor'S coach didnt tell him to move, dance or anything of the sort. In fact, he explicitly said that it was a decisive round! Also, he didn't reply to refs questions, twice! Nevertheless, Taylor was immense. But, Steel was wrong, as it turns out, for not stopping it earlier. However, he was so tough, that Steel couldn't see the internal damage. Shame - but hey, thats prizefighting! 🥊🥊🥊
Sad. In contrast u look at Floyd and you gotta understand his unwillingness to be physically beaten. I'd rather be called a boring fighter than brain dead.
WTF, how is that a bad decision? So the ref should change the rules only because its the last seconds? Fuck that shit, Chávez is the ultimate boxing legend.
The health of the fighter is paramount and Taylor could have very likely been badly hurt or even killed if he had taken one more punch to the head! The ref made the right call, having said that, what a great fighter and very tragic to see what has happened to him!
To everyone saying Chavez should've won this--do your fucking homework on Steele. This is nothing new for Steele. He made many controversial ruling and fight stoppages and eventually, they stopped giving him big fights to ref because of this. The whole fight was 2 against one--Chavez and Steele vs Taylor.
Taylor had a broken cheekbone and he was urinating blood. Taylor clearly received the most damaging blows. Taylor did not respond and the fight should've been stopped. The biased commentary is a sign that HBO wanted Taylor to win. He was more marketable in HBO's eyes. Taylor was an Olympic Champion, American, and he spoke English. How many times have we heard these idiots say Chavez could be a huge star if he learned to speak English? Chavez was known for breaking facial bones, ribs, and making his opponents urinate blood. Who can please these idiots? The only thing I care about is can the man fight and is the man exciting? My favorite active fighter is Naoya Inoue. He has beautiful footwork, good defense, quick feet, and quick hands. Oh he also has devastating power. Inoue doesn't even have 10 professional fights and he's already a two weight division World Champion. I'm Mexican and I don't speak Japanese, but that doesn't stop me from watching Inoue on the Internet.
+Francisco Cordova Inoue has the ingredients (like Meldrick Taylor) but he hasn't been tested by an elite fighter. Inoue, Gallo & Choco should fight each other at least 3 times in their careers.
+Wish Full Inoue destroyed Narvaez who had never been knocked out. Even Donaire couldn't knock out Narvaez. I know both Narvaez and Donaire are down hill, but that's still very impressive. I think Inoue will beat them both, but we'll see.
I see. Didn't know that before. But Navaez looked like he didn't want to continue. That's the advantage of power. Choco & Inoue have this advantage over Gallo. Gallo's advantage is his huge toolbox & variety of styles. With the right game plan & adjustment he can frustrate his opponents. Inoue also has better speed. He could well beat the other two. I am asian & I am rooting for Gallo. I like when skills & intelligence can overcome naturally gifted speed & power. The important thing is to be open minded & see what each fighter brings. 3 tremendous fighters with different styles, still young, on a collision course. I can't wait.
There were too many talking to him in his corner before the last round. The fight could have continued as he was clearly mentally aware judging by his incredulous look after being stopped.
+Mario Zoisl Yeah, but he was also holding on to the ropes with both hands. You are not supposed to do that. You need to let the ref see you can stand on your feet with your guard up.
Terrible loss that hurt his career while I do call a BS loss. Not a BS call when the ref looks at you look back. Not at the ceiling cross eyed which means out on your feet.Another 5-10 could have been dangerous if that was the case.Chavez was just a punishment machine and Meldrick was taking a beating slowly the whole fight. Amazing what 10 seconds could have been towards history. Two things learned from this fight never brawl Chavez and look the ref in the eye when asked if your ok...
they should have stopped the fight sooner... it was clear that meldrick's punches were flashy but soft...chavez never looked really hurt... on the other hand... MT's face looked broken from about the 9th.
R Steel said that Taylor was winning the fight but Chavez was punching harder, do you wanna know if Steel was telling the truth ? EASY. ...at the end of the round 9 ,Chavez condition looks still pretty good, look at his face, not stumbling, still focused, he was losing the fight by POINTS, but Look at Taylor's body and face ,he looked like he was Hit by a Train, he was the one who was taken the beating, Chavez couldn't handle Taylor speed, but chavez power was too much for Taylor, and 1 more Hit in Taylor's head could have ended in Tragedy.
Good stoppage. Meldrick was out of it. Meldrick embarassed us all with his grotesque face. Taylor never was meant to be. Chavez took EVERYTHING from Taylor. lol
Taylor got robbed........................ Best champ all time in my book, the fact he never went on the defense is liking being the chess champ without a Queen, he was the best bar none, disagree? You don't get the sport or the skill required to win without blocking, it's god mode in that sport.
Sorry but after All That the Ref is going to ROB This Kid of His Glory with 5 seconds Left !!!! Taylor Killed Himself in the ring but the Ref Killed Taylor's Spirit for the Rest of Taylor's LIFE !!!! These Refs should be boxers themselves so that they can understand what this Feels like !!!!
Richard Steele is one of the worst referees in modern-day boxing history. This was a great video until Steel tried to explain why he stopped the fight.
+lissongreenbanger Wrong! There was a lot of blame going around that night on why Taylor lost. But no one was more to blame than Taylor himself. From the middle of the 8th round and on, he decided to stop boxing and started trading with Chavez. He planted his feet and exchanged heavy shots that wore him down. By the 12th he was busted up inside and out. So win or lose, it didn't matter because Taylor was never the same after that fight.
Richard Steele was one of the worse refs in boxing. I could not believe they put Steele in the boxing hall of fame. he made more major mistakes then just the Taylor fight.
To start with this is my wife's account and I have been both an amateur and professional fighter from 69 to 93 with a total of 145 fights. I still am a boxing coach and have been around the game for 46 years. I am pretty sure I know what I am talking about.
Well if you were a professional fighter you should know that when a fighter Does Not answer the questions that the reff is asking he is out on his feet and the fight is over how is that steels fault ?
I think Meldrick Taylor would have disagreed. Richard Steele was at the center of every controversial stoppage in boxing for 20 years, There were fighters that had it in their fight contracts that Steele would not be the ref in their fights.I am not to only old pug who thinks poorly of Steele.
Anyone else think that there's a possibility that Chavez had something in his gloves? Or less padding? You don't receive injuries like meldrick did from regularly padded and wrapped gloves.
Dont be stupid. Chavez was considered the best, baddest, strongest p4p fighter in the 80s and 90s. He was always known for his vicious KO power. His récord stands at 107 wins (86 KOs) 5 loses 2 draws
+Wambli Padilla maybe he had altered his gloves in those fight too? I'm only asking because it's rare to see anyone receive these kind of injuries at any weight class let alone at 125lb.
I have to disagree. Taylor was still holding on to the rope and didn't respond to the referee in time so it was the right call. It doesn't matter how much time was left, rules are rules.
As much as i hate that he stopped it, he had no choice. He asked meldrick taylor twice wether he was alright and he got no response at all, so he just had to stop it
God this heart wrenching to watch.
Indeed
Double indeed. Such heart in Taylor.
Ahhhh Damn. The clips of Meldrick in the end of this video made me cry.
He deserved to win that fight
At the time,i thought it was a bad stoppage but now i believe it was correct,Taylor was beaten up,beaten up so bad that he wasnt the same fighter ever again.People forget Chavez stopped him a lot earlier and won a lot easily in the rematch. Those 2 fights ended Taylors career,he was never the same.It was tragic, but with 6 seconds left,Chavez could've landed a fatal blow and then everyone would be criticsizing Steele for not stopping it when he did.
To be honest, this is just a testimony to how tough Chavez was. What an unbelievably strong-willed man.
I was born in 1980 and I remember boxing when it was freaking awesome just like this. I'm sad for the death of boxing
I never get why people say this. The sport never died, and will never die. It will always be the number one combat sport in the world. It's suffering a slump now, but every generation has a slump, and every generation produces a star to revive that slump. It's happened so many times. The star of this generation hasn't appeared yet.
+Anees Niazi the sport is dead. Nobody watches it. You're like the only person. I say it's dead because it's dead. Sorry I love boxing
+ROBERT DEAN hey. I'm on your team I wish it was more popular. it'll be back I'm just saying right now not so much
+Anees Niazi You're absolutely right I feel like if GGG gets an actually good opponent that could stand toe to toe with him in the ring and gain more mainstream popularity he will be that guy if not then just wait 6 years and I guarantee the great fighter of this generation will come and bring boxing back into the spotlight like it was in the 80s and 90s
Chavez vs Taylor is hands down one of the BEST fucking fights I have EVER seen. Chavez is a piece of iron... truly the greatest Mexican boxer of ALL TIME.
Heart over stamina any day, Taylor had no defense, that's pure ballz, that's nature, Chavez was just more seasoned professional.
everything that i love and everything that makes me sad about the sport all defined in this mini documentary. thanks for the upload.
I hope they can honor Taylor in some great way. Like inducting him into the boxing hall of fame, or some other great tribute to him. He deserves it, to honor his achievements despite the odds and career setbacks after Chavez.
seeing the state Taylor is in at the end makes me hate myself being a box fan but on the other hand I can't help it's the greatest sport, damn
right im an amateur kickboxer atm and this shit scares me when i see fighters lose their chins and cognitive health. ive seen it in person its freaky
yeah but they both choose to be there. Plus rejecting violence is like rejecting life. Its a bit like being vegetarian. Refusing to eat animals is refusing nature Life and death its all ying and yang in it?

Don King holding JCC's hand at the end there says it all.
The rules are clear boxer does not anwser the questions stop the fight because one more hit could of kill him. Actually he should of stop it earlier becasue of the damage done.
Miguel Rodriguez Yeah, how would history remember Steele had he let the fight resume resulting Chavez maiming an incoherent Taylor for life?
+James Mueller then they would of say that Steele should of stop it no matter the time. Actually Meldric was not the same after that beating.
I always thought that the stoppage was correct.

Taylor deserved to win the fight. He outfought Chavez. Numbers don't lie.
It was the right decision, if a ref thinks a fighter is in no position to continue after 8-10 count fights over doesn't matter it there's 5secs or 5 rounds left, not Ooooh 5secs left Ooooh just give the win too this guy
That is painful to watch...
like rocky balboa said life it aint about how hard you hit its how hard you get hit and keep moving forward thats how winning is done...
makes me angry that his trainer lied about the advice he gave him before the last round. why would he lie about what he said? so sketchy.
Michael Cook lou duva definitely deflected fault. In reality it was 100% his fault. Snake.

lots of heart tnt
Chavez had more than just knuckles inside his gloves
your mother's right?
big cojones! that's what he has.

Great documentary though
All he had to do was move around for 5 seconds and hold on and Taylor would've won
Triste historia del Gran Meldrik Tailor, anunciaba el adebacle de uno de los los grandes...Julio Cesar Chavez...
We still talk about Mr. M. Taylor in my household when ever you want an example of bad refing and bad corner work.
Do Duran next!!!
100% agree...
richard should have never been allowed to referee a fight again
Taylor'S coach didnt tell him to move, dance or anything of the sort. In fact, he explicitly said that it was a decisive round! Also, he didn't reply to refs questions, twice! Taylor should have danced around a bit. Horrible final 20 sec for him.
Sad. In contrast u look at Floyd and you gotta understand his unwillingness to be physically beaten. I'd rather be called a boring fighter than brain dead.
Burnna Vision : True. But for somebody so gifted and so careful there is always ping pong, or figure skating.
Taylor had everything, but the only thing he didn’t have in his arsenal was good defense.
WTF, how is that a bad decision? So the ref should change the rules only because its the last seconds? Fuck that shit, Chávez is the ultimate boxing legend.

I ALWAYS wonder why didn't he play it safe in the 12th..
Damn this is sad
Taylor had a broken cheekbone and he was urinating blood. Taylor clearly received the most damaging blows. Taylor did not respond and the fight should've been stopped. Julio avoided controversy in the rematch and was more merciful, He knocked him out again but this time sooner!
Funny!
what did Chavez have in his gloves?
fucking dynamite man something that other fighters dont have lol
+mike .D Wraps soaked in plaster no doubt.
Lol
I'm a New Zealander "dumbass"
+Typhoontimmy New Zealander? Stick to rugby. Let true men do box cause you know nothing about Chavez. He was always known for his vicious KO power
Poor Guy 😕
There were too many talking to him in his corner before the last round. The fight could have continued as he was clearly mentally aware judging by his incredulous look after being stopped.
The Ref did the Right thing by stopping the fight ,Meldrick Taylor was taking a Beating
but you really not trying to see me tho
Richard Steele is one of the greatest refs in history. i feel bad for meldrick my heart really goes out to him but the better man won
This fight was one of the best of all time. I feel bad for taylor but this fight should have been stopped earlier
Talor was one punch from death don't blame the ref respect for both fightesrs
+julian poblano there is a special place in hell reserved for the assholes that stop a marathon runner 2 feet before the finish line
That WAS NOT a marathon; that was a BEATING. Taylor NEVER recovered from it. That's the truth...
One wonders who put the BIG bet on?
Lou Duva blew this fight for his fighter, distracting him while the ref wanted to know if Taylor could go on
+Mario Zoisl Yeah, but he was also holding on to the ropes with both hands. You are not supposed to do that. You need to let the ref see you can stand on your feet with your guard up.

why you people arguing who won or lost? its clear as day, just watch the fight.. at the end they tell you who won and lost ….
No querían que detuvieran la pelea y Taylor no se soltaba de las cuerdas,🤣
When he upset Buddy McGirt to win the title? I doubt very much that Taylor was the underdog in that fight.

+Wambli Padilla maybe he had altered his gloves in those fight too? I'm only asking because it's rare to see anyone receive these kind of injuries at any weight class let alone at 125lb.
+Wambli Padilla 107 wins dude.. wow.
Shame Taylor won the fight he won all first 10 rounds ref made terrible call
Blinded Commentators, Taylor Never was a powerful puncher, Taylor did not hurt chavez at all... chavez sent taylor to retire for the rest of his life.
terrible call by richard steele
I have to disagree. Taylor was still holding on to the rope and didn't respond to the referee in time so it was the right call. It doesn't matter how much time was left, rules are rules.
As much as i hate that he stopped it, he had no choice. He asked meldrick taylor twice wether he was alright and he got no response at all, so he just had to stop it
Floyd would have beat this man to death for 12 rounds
+whitefthq Stop smoking crack, please. It makes you stupid.
+Bert Jete heheheheheheheh
His uncle Roger Mayweather, was actually, knocked OUT TWICE by Chavez...
