On Line Twists and Bad Advice

    Hi Tony, I'm an intermediate experience skydiver and I had a spinning line twist on Sunday on a wingsuit jump and the first thing that came to my mind is this video. I immediately decided to cutaway. This video probably saved my life. Much appreciated. The content on this channel is invaluable!

    This is the absolute correct advice. I have myself close to 6000 jumps and i‘m jumping at a WL of 1.8 or 1.9. My last three cut aways have been spinning line twists. And my plan was always exactly what Bob describes here. Diving or spinning canopy. I cut away almost immediately - last one was two weeks ago training jump for german Nationals. (an additional reason is that G forces get bigger and you will struggle more to cut away the longer you wait - in addition to the fast altitude loss). Another important point is that you want to avoid to pull the reserve before you stabilize. Take a little time to get back in a stable position before you pull the reserve to avoid having issues with the reserve opening. Maybe obvious but i saw it several times.

      I disagree with this concept (in most cases), and most of the USPA does as well. Having a RSL (or MARD) deploy your reserve right on cutaway gets fabric over your head sooner, and generally that's going to be better. It can take 1,000 feet to get stable after cutting away.       There may be exceptions, of course, such as having a highly loaded reserve (above 2.0 perhaps). But you'll need to make sure you cutaway at the *soonest* sign of trouble, rather than fighting something and taking it to the deck.

    I cut away an on level line twist yesterday. Couldn't clear it and got to 1800' and chopped it. I found everything and landed safely. Made two more jumps with my turn rig. No sense getting hurt.

    I think spinning line twists have the capability to be the worst malfunction you can have. The g-forces can get extreme, and make finding your handle and pulling difficult too.

      I had 7 line twists on my first jump today when everything opened at around 2800.... I watched this video right before so im not sure if its bad luck lol but I assessed the situation and thought of this video which made me feel calm with the situation. I Wasn't spinning so I brought my risers together, kicked and kicked and kicked..cleared them 50 feet above my deck of 2500. Thanks Tony
