Elite announced an update to their most popular smart bike trainer. The new Direto XR comes with a bigger punch and can replicate up to 24% incline, that’s up from 18%, and now comes with a pre-installed 11-speed Shimano cassette. Elite also increased its price from $899 to $949.

when you first began talking - along with that background music - i thought you were about to start rapping your review
You hit 30 MPH wearing a pair of running shoes and seated on your bike. I need gravity assistance to hit that speed. Nice job Tariq!
Easy on a trainer. Just keep the resistance super low and fly wheel will get you there :)
Does direto need any mainteinance like freehud...? Very little info on that. Mayby i look manual🤓🤔😁
Great Video. Can you also make a comparison with the Wahoo Kickr Core as a representative of mid-range trainers?
I made one last year with the Direto X.
Not much have changed

Did you notice a slack when idling and then to start pedalling. Like a 4 cm kind of loose before the pedals actually make contact? Is this a problem or normal?
Thanks for the review. I have a Neo 1 and looking to change. How do you think this compares to the Kickr V5 or the Core from a noise perspective. Thanks
The KICKR 5 is quieter than all.
3:10 the way you put the bushing adaptor is wrong. It should be the outside of your dropout for 130mm axle.
Because of this mistake I broke my top end carbon frame in previous Direto model.
21 speed bike work with this trainer , or do i need to do something to make it work ? Thanks
Hi just bought a direto xr. I had the zumo before which broke. I’ve noticed in large chainring it doesn’t like the smaller cogs at the rear and plenty of vibration in this pedals. Is this what u were referring to about keeping mid cog in the rear?
Yes, it’s not going to work well when using the small cog in the rear. Try to keep it somewhere in the middle. However, the Direto seems to work best when in the small ring in the front.
Hi, thanks for the video! If the choice is between elite direto xr (750 euro) or wahoo kickr core (799 euro)
What do you recommend?
As far as I understand that it is only in the output values. What about the quality and time of service?
The flywheel on the Core is heavier and it also performs better in erg mode.
@@SmartBikeTrainers Thank you for your quick response)
Hi, thanks for your very interesting and complete reviews. I recently bought a Direto XR, but I'm having poor results in ERG mode. I'm using 34/16 gears and a cadence of 90. I see very large jumps, around plus minus 20W (sometimes 30W)when the requested power should be steady (150 or 200), and I got less than 50% of the values in a range between +/- 10% of the requested power. Elite support says this is due to the high precision of their equipment, but it seems to me that the scattering is too high. Looking at your charts, it seems that you have lower spikes... Any suggestion on what may I'm doing wrong? Thanks a lot again!!
The same happends with elite suito, and it is on erg mode on zwift workouts
I Have same issue
I recently bought a Direto XR and the problem I see is that with 100% "realism" applications (Rouvy, Bkool ...) slopes above 5% are artificially difficult for me, with unrealistic difficulty. The inertia of the Direto XR's flywheel in these circumstances is minimal, which I think contributes to artificially hard pedaling. My question is whether a Kickr or a Neo 2T, with their superior flywheels, makes so much difference to the Direto XR, in those circumstances (high slopes and low speed) to consider swapping the XR for one of them. Can you help me? Thanks
Hello, I have been also experiencing the same thing - unrealistic difficulty on slopes above 5 % ( even 5% is hard ! ) and I know for the fact that I am able to ride real hills with slopes 6% without so much struggle..Have you resolved this matter somehow ??
Quick please: Direto XR vs Kickr Core, which one should i get? Thanks
the Direto XR has better precision, integrated cadence & speed sensors, is really well speced for the price - and it's newer. The Wahoo Kickr Core is quieter, road feel is better, it can connect to multiple devices via bluetooth simultaneously - it's basically a 2018 Wahoo Kickr rebranded. In a pure "features battle" the Direto XR is the clear winner vs the Kickr Core. Real life use, not sure. People swear by the Kickr (Core)'s road feel, it's super quiet, and it's accurate and responsive. Personally, I live in Europe so I chose the Direto XR (easier dealing re warranty due to Elite being based in Italy). I also like the value-for-money of the Direto XR, as it's basically top specs for mid-ranged pricing. DC Rainmaker's review of it - and in particular oof its accuracy in ERG mode - was more positive than this review, which goes to show maybe, that quality control / consistency in production with Elite smart trainers (and with smart trainers in general) is maybe still a bit volatile. That's why many recommend you buy from a company that's based on your continent (US - Wahoo / Europe - Tacx, Elite), to make eventual warranty case dealings easier.
@@TechnoShamanism wahoo has the best support ever! And I live also in Europe. So it doesn't matter in which continent u are when it comes to the support of wahoo :)
I am just about to purchase the elite direto XR, I have a Bianchi intenso 11 speed campagnolo cassette. As I have never had a smart trainer before and this one comes with a 11 speed Shimano cassette already fitted, how easy would be to change to the campagnolo cassette, and would I need any additional items like a free hub to make it possible.
You will need to get a
Campagnolo freehub adapter. Like this one:

Is there any wheel size set value for this trainer for our bike computers? Thanks.
Should be 173mm
In each video, you mention to check the current prices. This confuses me. Are you a dealer for some or all of these products? Is there a link to the prices of the products under review/ Thanks.
I am not a dealer of any products. I do track prices of these trainers and link to some retailers that I might have an affiliate partnership with. Here is the link to where I track prices: www.smartbiketrainers.com/indoor-smart-bike-trainers-price-tracker
What service or website do you use to overlay charts from different devices? At 4:39 you show it.
That’s a software called Rubitrack available on for Mac OS
I'm torn between the Directo XR and the Garmin TacX Neo 2T
Both are good trainers. The NEO is a much higher end, smoother, and offers a lot more than the Direto.
My bike has claris group set , can I use my bike on this trainer?
I don’t have a Claris group set so I’m not sure but I don’t see why not. I would double check with a bike shop or Elite.
Good video but don’t need the music. Want to hear the smart trainer actually running more. What’s differences with the new XR-T model?
I received mine a couple of weeks ago, still hasn't had the time to test it because the weather was still good outside. Today: cold day and rain, so I put my bike on it, spent a lot of time to adjust my rear derailleur (still not ok, but I think I won't do any better), and then tried to connect it with Upgrado and... the app doesn't find it :'-(
Make sure it’s turned on and the lights are blinking. That happened to me the other day and realized the trainer went into sleep after not pedaling for a few minutes. Also, make sure it’s not connected to anything else.
@@SmartBikeTrainers Thanks but... not, it doesn't detect my Direto. Unplugged, plugged, Ant+ light blinking, the 2 others are ON but not blinking :-\
I had a similar experience with the original Direto, I couldn't make rear derailleur work smoothly with my wife's Bianchi Infinito. And just before I decided to return it, I tested it with my Giant TCR Pro. It worked flawlessly. I decided to test it with my wife's gravel bike SCOTT Addict and again worked flawlessly. Turns out from all the bikes I've tested, (five, plus Cervelo R5, and Specialized Transition) Bianchi Infinito was just not compatible somehow with that trainer. I could see when I was tightening the quick release, how the rear derailleur was bending enough to disturb shifting. The derailleur was bending somehow inwards 1-2 mm. When I was un-tightening it, the derailleur was coming back to the correct position which make me think was more of a frame bend and not a hanger bend. All the other bikes through axle, or quick releases, do not bend the derailleur when tighten. Not sure if is the trainer, the bike, or both, but if you can you should try to test it with a different frame.
@@L.O.K.I Thanks, I will try and report the result :-p
PS: I already had that problem with that bike on my previous HT. Never tried with another one... will see.
@@L.O.K.I I put my other bike on it and it's working :-D Thanks for your suggestion ! Now I have some vibrations with the Direto XR, it gets worse on the smallest sprockets. Iit doesn't come from the cassette/chain, but from something in the mechanical part of the Direto :-\
Will it fit an 8 speed cassette?
You will need to add spacers for the 8 speed cassette but it should work fine.
Nice nice....
Would you recommend this unit vs TACX Flux 2 vs Wahoo Core ?
I did a video on these three except it was the Direto x. But my thoughts are still the same.

@@SmartBikeTrainers , Thankyou ! I watched the video but didn’t see a final recommendation. I would be happy with any but I feel a bit soured by TACX so will go for the Core or Dorito XR ... if I can find . Thankyou
Direto XR or Saris H3?
From an accuracy stand point, the XR is much more accurate. Erg mode and build quality, the H3 is better.
@@SmartBikeTrainers thank you
And comes with 1 month Zwift subscription 😊
Yes it does :)
