      Suggestion made in the desire to help... be selective of who you get your history from. Like this one - if they are leaving important stuff out, they have a desire to tilt your thinking in their direction rather than provide actual information.

    Here we are in the 21st century, never before with such a levels of accumulated wisdom, collective connectivity, command over the elements and more manpower available to harvest new insights as never before ... And our primary concern is how to best not offend those who would rather ignore, rewrite and erase history entirely. Yet still keep all the conveniences and benefits.

    • @Jack-eo5fn

      Teresa, so are you saying that you do, or you don’t, approve this particular version of early American history? Im sorry but I can’t discern your point and hope you will clarify. The version appears to be accurate, at least as far as we can know 400 years later, and it’s clearly written by 2 rather progressive authors who intentionally omitted certain legends and “American myths.” These were invented over the centuries by people who had religious or political agendas inconsistent with facts.
      When you castigate people who would “ignore, erase or rewrite history” I’m wondering to whom you are referring. Yes it’s certainly the case that “real” history has been revised and rewritten countless times. That’s why credible, credentialed historians are involved in perpetual research and scholarship, trying to separate the grain from the chaff. It’s tedious work. So do you approve of this cleaner version of American history?. I hope so.

      @@Jack-eo5fn it helps to read some things twice.... but to break it down, she's saying these are literally the best times we've ever had in recorded history but instead of utilizing our resources to improve life we pander to a lot of spoiled emotionally retarded brats who appreciate nothing and destroy everything in their path if you offend them, including destroying livelihoods and information they disagree with..... does that help?
      @Teresa Watson
      it's sad but this is usually what societies do just before they collapse into a dark age. The generations after WWII have been coddled and ignored, they don't actually know life or death struggle because there is literally a program and handout for every aspect of life - some people fail at all stages.
      Parents meant well, but they really screwed up by giving their kids everything without requiring them to earn it. you don't appreciate it if you don't earn it.
      We're on a rocket slide headed right back into Survival of the Fittest.
      Today, right now.... is as good as its going to get. it's all down hill from here. (if we don't all put an end to these epic temper tantrums.)

    Even the history teachers in our school's don't know enough to properly teach the children about are past not that kids really care about the history of the U.S. or the world. It really comes down to the parents. The education system isn't the only problem.

    • @czdaniel1
      @czdaniel1 8 лет назад +2

      US History is hard to teach because it is so short. Some of the best studies in history are on the rise and fall of Nations/States. There are great stories there. US history before WWII can cover the rise of the US; the Rise & Fall of Slavery; and then it starts getting really subjective on what the focus should be outside of that, made worse by the fact many issues that we might want to teach using American history, can be taught (and maybe better taught) through histories from other countries. Lessons on tolerance, open social acceptance & open finance lessons from the 17c Dutch (and how these lessons allow that tiny state to stand up to the juggernaut of Louis XIV's France); Social responses to urbanization, and social unrest from Britain contrasted with France (one got rich & ruled the world; the other got the French Revolution); Problems & responses to industrialization (AKA: Marx, Liberalism, Romanticism, & child labor laws). Some of that might be found in US history, but I usually think Britain & Germany are good for teaching those lessons. Ok, I'll stop here. If anybody has any suggestions for what lessons should be addressed through Pre-WW2 US history, feel free to make suggestions.

    • @cacambo589
      @cacambo589 3 года назад +1

      But if progressive is a good way to learn, it's an even better way to live. Progress got rid of slavery, gave women the vote, took power from monarchs and gave it to the people. Progress ends wars and finds cures for crippling illnesses. Progress teaches children and cares for old folk. Progress brings justice, peace and prosperity.

    • @sociallyhostileelement3425
      @sociallyhostileelement3425 3 года назад +24

      @@cacambo589, it depends on what you're "progressing" towards. It can be towards good things like those you listed. The way it's used in politics usually means less and less freedom for the individual and more power and centralization of the government. Progressivism in its extreme is the Soviet Union and Mao's China.

    • @ApartmentKing66
      @ApartmentKing66 3 года назад +4

      @@cacambo589 The problem with that word is that the left has hijacked it. If by "progressive" you mean leftism, hatred for one's country (e.g., the sedition taught in universities by leftist professors like Noam Chomsky), and government getting bigger and bigger to where the individual becomes a "subject" and the government a monarchy, then no, "progressive" is an evil that should be avoided at all costs. It's for this reason that I don't like the word as the left has tried to use it. It has too positive a connotation when there's nothing positive about it at all unless you're part of the oppressive government.

    The opening we hear while the reader is beginning this librivox book on the current style of teaching history is valid and vital information. Those who are claiming it puts them to sleep are not able to see the point. I would normally avoid calling them out, but my mom's voice in my ear saying, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" compels me. Those complainers are not offering "constructive ctiticism." Their complaint can only be because they cannot think big. Too bad. This is a good style to impart history!

    Rick, the only way to develop a full view of history is to understand historians and to educate ourselves using many many sources by many historians. I don't dismiss Beard's point of view; and as he was one of the most important historians ever, it's a good idea not to. However, history is not, as we would think- it's not a series of irrefutable facts. Events were, as they are now, seen differently through each eye. It behooves us to identify the eyes of the past, and try to understand the many points of view. And Beard was absolutely Progressive politically. It wasn't just a state of mind.

    To me, the most fascinating aspect of the argument that the constitution was written by capitalists in response to agriculturalists is that the agriculturalists have now become the capitalists. It's not just Monsanto and that garbage (not to dismiss the whole issue); but that even farmers and big agri have been essentially paid off in order to accept capitalism in it's least restrictive form. The whole notion of corporate personhood becomes glaring when we learn about similar issues with proponents of the constitution when it was written! ESPECIALLY knowing how personal interest drove the writing of the document, not uniting states.

      Quite correct.
      Here's a copy of my comment with a clip from an article I wrote.
      Just for an exchange of ideas.
      It is about a a 3-5 minute read. None required, lol.
      Copy:
      I'm just speculating, as I haven't listened yet, but I'm speculating:
      "This is "the 20th Century's History Story" (still too early to stake a 21st Century story) as approved by "Mainstream Academia".*
      "Mainstream Academia" the gro u p of Academics with the Power Roles in their fields, in Education, and with a voice through "Mainstream Media" - they're sorta 2 sides of the same coin.
      I'm attaching a clip from an article I wrote, the reader is free to establish their own perspective, it is merely a sharing of information.
      Copy:
      .Academic Model + History Hub
      *Upon the lands of the Americas existed Civilizations, prior to an crossing of a "ice or land strait/bridge" and any "ocean highway travel", and this fact is evident in both the:
      1. (Ancient Remains: Ruins, Artifacts, Fossils, Burial Mounds, and the Foundations of the later building of those whom came after), easily observed at many sites.
      2. In the Histories of the Peoples that built upon the old remains.
      Note: People whom established a Record Tradition of Oral History is far more accurate than any written History.(*) It is not a Myth Story when individuals are selected, by standards, and taught "specifically verbatim" the History Chapte's Stories. These Oral Histories have all received a variety of supporting validations through findings in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Modern DNA, including the Mapping of migrations using DNA, specific to the works of *Dr David Reich, Geneticist, Harvard University, an acclaimed expert with a fully Mature Mind and observable Integrity and Ethics, found in his works, findings, and corrections to his scope of Perspective, all supported by Peer Review and Journal Published Articles.*
      Written History tends to be the choice of "Mainstream Academia", yet Written History is easily apt to be a written story with a personal interpretation, desired idea, edited, and overwhelming it is written by the Victors and with the Victor's Perspective, their bias, and/or to flatter their cause/position.
      *It would be most rare to find a Written History, of Old and even rare in Present Era, that was written from a fully Non biased and "Authentic Academic" effort, and even those whom may intend such are hindered by their resources, many of which have been affected by the previous individuals influenced by their idea of facts.
      The "Mainstream Academics" have an established Paradigm and Timeline built upon "belief" in a 19th Century Theory as its foundation and they use this Paradigm and Timeline as their Tool to measure and qualify all findings and data, thus causing "Flaws" to their concepts, writings, teachings.
      The "Standards of Science and Research" include the following summary:
      *"Mind is to be fully open, free of any: Beliefs, Theories, Opinions, and any Influences that would/will interfere with the proven Research Methodologies, which will reveal the greater facts of the data entered."*
      It is necessary to enter all qualifying data and this is disrupted when one is using a Theory-based Tool to disqualify "artifacts, fossils, Oral and/or Written History Stories, and other data".
      I have observed known Peer Reviewed Findings (these are deemed premium facts), being ignored because they don't support their "Mainstream Academic Paradigm and Timeline".
      This is intentional, therefore doing so is unethical, a Flaw in their own perspective, and most unprofession in their area of Academics.
      For these reasons, all of our story of History requires a complete Audit. This would require a Team of "Authentic Academics" (those whom follow the "Standards of Science and Research") with a built-in "check-and-balance" method, and under a "Peer Review Board" to certify the works. Although it appears it would be a vast undertaking, and it is, yet it is absolutely necessary, and there are a number of tools that will support the woolros being accomplished in reasonable amounts of time and recorded in a system allowing for new findings to be updates to the central base storage of this "Verified History Content" in a most immediate, (upon Peer Review completion status) and this literally establishing a "Hub for the Authentic History" as a resource for all whom work/study in any subject of History.
      This is necessary for the vast subjects and findings are quickly being realized, yet *"the General Current Knowledge has far too many gaps in current and accurate status."
      Textbooks and Teaching Content in all levels of Education are terribly lacking in current facts and overwhelmingly have many inaccuracies.
      For the greater benefit of te subject of: "a Center or Hub of a Written Accurate History Resource", I would suggest the following would be Requirements or it would lack the Trust as a "Superior Ethical Content":
      (1) a Qualified Board of Academics from multiple backgrounds and subjects of expertise, (not just Historians and/or Archaeologists).
      1. There must be Academics representing the areas of: (The areas of Science, Quantum Physics, Genetics, Biology/Chemistry; Math; History and Ancient History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Geology, Sociology, Psychology, Law, Philosophy and Tech Fields.
      2. A new qualifying Certification must be added for any Academic to hold a position in any area of Administration, Education/Teaching, and all Research that is to be Peer Reviewed, including those whom do Peer Review. This would be the subject of "Managing Self, Mind and Thought": the successful understanding of One's Higher Mind vs the Lower Mind, aka Ego Mind, aka Adolescent Mind. The Higher Mind is also know as the Mature Mind, it is where all Positive Thoughts Energies reside: Love, Joy, Balanced Self Love, Confidence, Worthiness, where our Creative, our Optimism, and our Maturing of Mind is achieved, it is where Wisdom resides.
      The Ego or Lower Mind is where we find the Negatives: Fears, Prejudices, Doubts, Envy, Jealousy, the lackings: self doubt, insecurities, preoccupation with what others think about us, lacking of Dignity, Integrity, Respect for self and others, It is where we can make decisions that cause harm to the wellbeing of self or others, greed, over self centered due to fears.
      The lack of this subjects awareness and understanding can be seen in the actions of those whom can not easily admit they are wrong, make a mistake, or allow new finding to update one Perspective, to release old Theories and ideas in order to gain an evolving of knowledge in order to advance in an area or on a subject. Those who are living through the Ego Mind are preoccupied with status, material glory, and threaten Peers whom have new Ideas and Theories, and/or support Ideas/Theories that are different than theirs.
      These individuals have cost 0eople the reputation, job, livelihood. This is neither Intelligent, Ethical, now of a Mature Mind with Wisdom.
      It is most apparent that to hold a position in Academia, it is ever so important for the individual to have the knowledge, understanding, and be in a practicing of managing their Ego Mind with their Higher Mind, to be living through the Higher Mind and in the area of Wisdom.
      Our current era is in the state of a chaos due to this latter subject, because Academics are also behaving in a notable degree like the General Public, reacting to News Media, it is clear that resolution rests in applying this concept.
      Due to this state of energies the next step is a demanding of Truths, of Facts, of Integrity, and the first to step up to the solutions would be those whom have the learned knowledge to do so and to teach the *value of a Mature State of Thoughts and Actions".*
      Once this is addressed and underway, all that follows is with ease and the corrective balancing in Harmony ripples throughout.
      *Even the comprehension of this brings one a feeling of Harmony.*

    History is about past experiences & events that contain the progression & spread or regression & contraction of Populations, Philosophies, Politics, Religion, Science, Economics, Art, etc.
    All of this for the purpose of understanding who people are as groups & their dynamic or lack thereof between other groups.
    Stories are about obtaining an understanding of principles, both moral & logical, that our ancestors either did or did not learn, passing on their knowledge or ignorance for the betterment of detriment of their posterity & subjects.
    In all honesty....you should just teach people conspiracy theory throughout their lifetimes. That or teach them correct principles & let them govern themselves according to the Linear-Minimalist Standard, recognizing Creator Individuals as desirous to become & encourage others to also be.
    Everything else is in passing....but it is still important to know history in order to inspire & convict a person into coming up with a solution for the problems we face in the future.
    History in otherwords, is like a crystal-ball that functions like a puzzle-box, allowing us to see the future, but only if we understand how things work in ourselves, the world, & the universe.

      American History starts with the Native Americans. Learn about them and who it was that came to America with African people in bondage.
      Learn about what the European white colonists did to the Native Americans and drove them to Indian Reservations.
      Learn about the slavery and forced free labor of the African people.
      Start there because that's where it all begins.
      Learn about how the African work force in picking cotton made the elites rich and the plantation owners.
      It wasn't the white man doing the work.
      It was the evil institution of slavery that the Europeans created in America and didn't want to stop even when It was abolished.
      There is so much more that has not been taught or written in the textbooks.

      I stopped listening to this audiobook after two minutes of the “preface” when the authors said they would not talk about military battles regarding American history. Also they would not talk about heroic people. Then what the fuck are they going to talk about that might be interesting to us? Thumbs down to this goddamn book and I haven’t even read one word of it. The preface is enough to let you know that this is water down history.
      Real history is made by important people who stand out or small groups of people who do. Let’s not amalgamate everything here as if it’s an ant colony

      World history has been taught in the United States from a very Eurocentric perspective from the beginning, as has been geography.
      Note how Japan, Korea, China... are referred to as 'the Far East' even when geography is taught in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii.
