The reason is that Blackthorne with a ship was a threat for the Portuguese, the Spanish and the Church. It was either him or the ship because if you remove one of the equation there's no threat. Both Mariko and Toranaga choose the Anjin's life over the ship... for different reasons but they did.

    • @jonfreeman9682
      @jonfreeman9682 13 дней назад +3

Mariko wanted to save him but for some weird reason Toranaga won't let him leave. But that ship is no danger to anyone. I think the Portuguese don't want him to leave is the real reason. They don't care about the ship. Portuguese has a monopoly on trade with Japan and they don't want English or any other country to know their secret trade route which Anjin would share with merchants in England to open up new trade and compete with Portuguese. This was during the great shipping era after Christopher Columbus discovered America there was a huge race to expand trade routes and colonize new land.

Shōgun is a perfect series top to bottom. Nothing I’d change about it. Told a complete story with no stone unturned. The vision of the future Toranaga shared with Yabushige and Blackthorne pulling his ship out of the bay is all you needed to see to know what came next.

    History Fact Sheet
More than a decade after this story, Blackthorne (Anjin) did not return to his native England, where his wife and children were waiting for him, despite having received permission from Tranaga (Yeayas) to return home. In a letter to the British East India Company, he wrote that he wanted to return after saving more cash. At the time, Blackthorne spoke fluent Japanese and was completely at home in Japan. His behavior was also completely Japanese. His compatriots called him "a Japanese with a European face" (Journal of the Voyage of John Sailis, British Envoy to Japan). He had a Japanese wife and children.
Above all, he was at the center of Japanese politics as a close confidant of Toranaga (Ieyasu), but would return to being a mere sailor when he returned to England. Along with his love for his Japanese wife and children, This is probably one of the reasons he did not return to England.

At first he was a curiosity to Toronaga and useful with his ships cannons. At the end though, he was just trying to keep him from being killed. The Portuguese couldn't let him leave and disclose the location and how to get to Japan. It was all about trade for them and they wanted to protect that, but of course after Toronaga (Tokugawa Ieyasu) was made Shogun he wanted them gone as they would cause strife in Japan and ally the clans against him.

To each his own. But I kind of see this kind of ending from the very nature of the series. It's not really about engaging in grand battles but more of securing absolute victory even before a war begins. It emphasizes how cunning Toranaga is and that is the point of the series. Yabushige even alluded to this by asking Toranaga how does it feel like shaping the wind to his will.

In a letter to the British East India Company, Anjinin wrote that he had gained the trust of the Shogun, the ruler of Japan. The Spanish and Portuguese were the first to preach Catholicism in this country and also tried to monopolize trade. The Dutch also established a trading post in Hirado, Japan, in 1609. Anjin wrote that England should also send an envoy.
The English learned of the situation through this letter, and in 1613, an English envoy with a letter of state from King James I came to Japan seeking trade. Adams served as interpreter. Thanks to Adams' efforts, the British were able to establish a trading post in Hirado in the same year, and Hirado became the center of Anglo-Japanese trade. However, the relationship between the head of the mission, John Saylis, and Adams was not going well. Seiris complained that Adams insisted and forced him to do everything the Japanese way. His behavior is almost Japanese. He is Japanese with a European face. And Adams was on good terms with his enemies, the Spanish and Portuguese merchants, who went back and forth with each other. Whose side is he on? Adams, on the other hand, was of the opinion that Seiris was "arrogant, thoughtless, ignorant, a newcomer, and a young man. When the mission left Japan the following year, the Shogun gave Adams permission to accompany the mission back to England. Adams, however, refused. There are many possible reasons for this, but perhaps the conflict with Seiris was one of them.

William Adams historically outlived Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the new shogun allowed Adams to return home, but he refused preferring to remain in Japan. He was also offered a position as retainer, but preferred to engage in trade in the region, built an captained severa trading ships, and was moderately successful. He married a Japanese commoner and had children by her, essentially abandoning his English wife and children, who became destitute.

Just to put some things into perspective. This show while good strays from the book in some significant ways. The Novel focus on Blackthorne and Mariko as tragic characters, forced to live lives of divided loyalties and an impossible love until the tragic end. Mariko dies to honor her Lord and save Blackthorne's life and Blackthorne lives on to honor Mariko's sacrifice and try and find fortune and revenge as a privateer. Toranaga was never the main character like this version pretends he and his quest to be Shogun are just the setting for the story.
Also Toranaga who is based on the first Tokugawa Shogun did not bring peace and prosperity to Japan.
One of the first things he did was create a type of royal court in Edo and Order/Forced the most prominent Lords (his rivals) to keep residences in the city where there should be at least one direct member of their families (wife, son or brother) at all times. Effectively turning them into hostages (just like Ishido did in the novel). The actual lords were also bullied into staying in Edo for long periods of time for religious festivals or official duties and nobody was allowed to leave without his authorization.
Life at his court and maintaining luxurious residences in Edo became quite expensive and the Lords started to release Samurai from service because they could not support them. At one point hundreds of thousands of Samurai were roaming the country as Ronin. Samurai by law and tradition could be nothing more than warriors or bodyguards, they couldn't be farmers or fishermen.
So they started roaming, seeking employment or an honorable death. Many resorted to stealing and murder or seeking death in duels and quickly made a mess of the countryside spreading unrest. There were even violent rebellions from lordless Samurai against the Tokugawa Shoguns.
Another thing Tokugawa did when he became shogun was force the Jesuit order and the Portuguese out of Japan, Isolating the country from trade so he could stay in power and in the process went to war and killed the catholic lords and ordered the arrest, torture and execution of all Japanese catholic.
Peaceful and prosperous Tokugawa age indeed ...

Near the end of episode 10 you see Blackthorne as a dying old man with young Caucasian boys in his room making comments about whether it was barbarians that had given him the sword. This would lead us to believe that Blackthrone was back in England where such Samurai swords would be foreign.

For Mariko it was about saving Johns life in the 1980s series she left him an explanation in her will which she'd written before she left explaining that it was the price she was going to offer to save his life she also left money asking him to build another ship as she knew his life would need a purpose after she was gone and asked him to move on with his life. He did and named it "the lady" for Toronaga it's pretty clear he didn't want John to leave Japan perhaps because John saved his life twice perhaps he viewed John like a pawn of destiny in the real history Toronaga didn't like the Portuguese Catholics because they wanted to convert everyone so shared that dislike with John Blackthorn. In real life Marko had 6 children with her husband and he did not want to kill her so sent her into isolation to protect her in isolation she did convert to the Catholic church one of the only ladies to do so before the Portuguese were banished.

So disappointed in the finale. The whole episode felt like the last 5/10 minutes of most films, where nothing really happens, but it ties up the loose ends, literally explaining what will happen next. I mean the monologue from Toranaga explaining would what happen was such lazy writing. I'm not even fussed about missing a big battle, that's fine, but some sort of climax would have been nice.
What actually happened in this episode? Blackthorne's ship being by burnt by Toranaga was the only big reveal, but even that felt pretty obvious the second we saw the burnt ship. Yuba getting caught the second he stepped on land was incredibly undramatic as well. Even Toranaga being a power hungry fiend felt pretty obvious throughout the whole series.
The finale for me was a 2/10. The series as a whole was still excellent. If they'd nailed this last episode it would have been close to a 10.

in the book the actual kind of "battle" is in the epilogue and it's like 10 lines. And to be fair Toranaga always said he wanted to avoid conflict. All the chest moves he did were to win without figthing. He only wanted peace because he had a vision for the future and the reason he secretly wants to be Shogun is because he need that title to make sure people respect his will.
