- This video includes all the highlights of Pelé in 1970 FIFA World Cup .
Rei Pelé became the only one player who won 3 world cups in Mexico 70. Brazil 1970 was widely regarded as the best football team ever.
4 goals and 6 assists in 6 matches. 1 goal and 2 assists in WC final .
Pelé's 28 Key Passes are second only to Cruyff in World Cup history .
Not only a goalscorer, but also a playmaker and a leader .
'Who will now suggest that he is less than the greatest footballer we have ever seen?' In assessing the 1970 finals, Hugh McIlvanney paid handsome tribute to the Brazilian virtuoso.
Beginning in 1964, Pelé has been considered one of the greatest footballers of all time. After the 1970 World Cup, this "one of" could be removed.
The ITV commentary team in Mexico comprised Hugh Johns, Gerald Sinstadt, Gerry Harrison and Roger Malone (all pictured below). Billy Wright joined Johns as co-commentator, England captain Bobby Moore co-commentated on a semi-final and the final. Brian Moore stayed behind in London to present the programmes.

*Four matches tonight and again they all kicked-off at the same time. Commentator for highlights of Brazil/Czechoslovakia on BBC1 was David Coleman, the match is best remembered for Pelé's attempt to lob the keeper from the half way line (missing by a whisker). Broadcast hours were the same as the previous night.

*The favourites vs the holders, and the most keenly anticipated match of the group round. Both channels showed it live - BBC1 were first on air at 6:20-8:55pm (with David Coleman commentating), ITV were on from 6:45-9:10pm. Ten minutes into the match England keeper Gordon Banks made the most famous and seemingly impossible save of all time, diving to the foot of his far post to scoop a downward Pelé header up and over the bar, Jairzinho scored on the hour by finishing off a fine move involving Tostao and Pelé, England then made a double substitution and within minutes of coming on both players had missed great chances, first Alan Ball who misskicked and then a terrible miss by Geoff Astle in front of a practically open goal. There were also some iconic masterly tackles by England captain Bobby Moore in which he dispossessed Pelé and robbed Jairzinho inside the penalty box.

*Brazil were 2-0 up early on with goals on 11 and 18 minutes, Peru were back in it at 2-1 on 28, Brazil scored again on 52, Peru on 69, Brazil then finished the scoring at 4-2 on 76. Ken Wolstenholme commentated for the BBC.
Wed 17/Jun/1970 Brazil 3 (Clodoaldo, Jairzinho, Rivelino) Uruguay 1 (Cubilla)

*ITV's Semi-final day coverage began with a preview programme at 5:45-6:30pm, the live broadcast started at 10:30pm. ITV and BBC tossed a coin for first pick of the semi's, ITV won and opted for the Brazil tie. BBC1 broadcast delayed coverage of Brazil/Uruguay from around 1:20am with Ken Wolstenholme commentating. The match is best remembered for a near miss when Pelé dummied the keeper by letting the ball run one side of the keeper whilst he ran around the other, regrettably his finishing effort was wide, otherwise it would have been a very strong contender for the greatest goal ever scored.
Sun 21/Jun/1970 Brazil 4 (Pelé, Gérson, Jairzinho, Carlos Alberto) Italy 1 (Boninsegna)
(7pm bst)
ITV LIVE
Hugh Johns & Bobby Moore
*The build up on ITV began with a preview programme at 2-3pm, the live coverage began at 6:45pm and was due to end at 9:10pm. Ken Wolstenholme commentated for BBC1 whose live coverage began at 6pm (they also had a preview show at 2-3:30pm which probably included highlights of the 3rd/4th play off). Both nations were seeking to win the Jules Rimet trophy for keeps having each won the competition twice before, Pelé opened the scoring for Brazil on 18 mins by heading in a lobbed Rivelino cross from the left, Italy then equalised on 37 when Roberto Boninsegna stole the ball from a defender attempting a fancy back heel. In the 2nd half, Brazil went close with a free-kick just outside the box which saw Rivelino strike the cross bar before Gérson struck a sweet left footer to restore the lead at 2-1 on 66 mins. A long high ball into the box on 71 was headed down by Pelé and Jairzinho scrambled home to become the first player to have scored in every World cup finals match through to the final. Finally, Brazil scored probably the most awesome goal ever seen, a delightful build up found Jairzinho on the left wing, he played it inside to Pelé who was standing just outside the 'D', Pelé then appeared to pass the ball into no-man's land on the right, but suddenly - from out of nowhere - Carlos Alberto came flying into view and lashed the ball into the net for 4-1, beautiful. Perhaps that goal on 87 mins would not have looked quite so spectacular had it been in 16:9 ratio widescreen rather than 4:3, but it was a fabulous way to end the tournament.

I grew up during 1982 and Socrates and zico and Eder and junior but even that team of talent must bow down and to the fact that 1970 was the greatest even the 2002 Brazil of rivaldo ronaldhino and Ronaldo are not worthy of the kingship of 1970 brazil
Already the GOAT but he became the undisputed one after this World Cup. He was way past his prime/peak and many had already said he was no longer a footballer but a ‘retired’ ‘old’ ‘washed’ player, the 1970 WC was the ultimate farewell. If he was never injured in 58, 62, 66 we could have seen even something greater.
They talk about these players today, no one was better than Pele period.
This guy was fantastic. I thought Messi is magic but Pele was surely something else. He would have won 10 Ballon Dor easily without much fuss.

No player dead or alive was as elegant on the ball as Pele. He was so far ahead of his time.

Pelé only is the best 🏆😎👌
Undoubtedly ahead of his time. Effortless flow of movement and also capable of doing some things that modern footballers simply do not contemplate. Being able to disorientate a defender without touching the ball is something I haven’t seen many other footballers do. Maradona was the pinnacle as he did with the ball, what pele could do at double the speed. Pelé was more complete though ...
There is nobody, including Maradona, that could upset a whole defense the way Pele did. One moment everyone is at their proper position, the next he's done a small faint or an unpredictable pass and everything is collapsing. Check how many times his teamates, and even camera's, get surprised by his ideas.
Maradona played in better pitches . Messi played in modern conditions
Thats why Messi is faster than both.
Fools don't understand that and try to slander older players expecting them to run like usain bolt
Modern players playing in those conditions wouldn't even be able to play a 90 minute match
@@sohelbashar6925 this is why older players are stronger
It should be remembered that this Pele was past his best he was definitely quicker and more inclined to dribble from prior to his injuries. Looking at his underlying numbers at this world cup would be fascinating. Virtually ever action was progressing the ball, creating shots, pre-assisting or assisting.
I think you're right. It took me a long time to really appreciate Pele. I think Maradona technically had the edge but Pele is the most imaginative and inventive player I've seen. Amazing footballer. Tough call between the two.
Too much praise
Maradona was at least as good as him. There isn't such a difference . Stop saying that
@@sohelbashar6925 Pele's weaker foot is stronger than Maradona's only foot. Can Maradona play the ball off his opponent's legs? Can Maradona head like Pele? Maradona reached Pele's level in one World Cup, but in 78, Maradona was 17, in a home World Cup..he didn't make the team. In 82, same team plus Maradona, result? There you see the trajectory. In 66 Pele was same age as Maradona in 86. Both able to go through teams, only one wasn't allowed to play, else the result may well have been the same. Pele in 1970 was better than Maradona in 1990, playing against better teams..a better Uruguay, Italy and Romania. Pele's Santos hadn't won anything since 1935, then won everything only with Pele. Pele's first World Cup came on the back of a 58 goal season. Pele played at peak Maradona level in every World Cup and Copa Libertadores final, surpassing even that in the 1962 Copa Libertadores. Perhaps you think Maradona faced better players but you would be wrong. However if I had to choose between you and people who managed and played with or against Maradona, and who also faced Pele; and you, Carlos Bilardo, Cesar Minotti, Roberto Perfumo, Daniel Passarella, Giovanni Trapattoni and Fabio Capello all swear Pele far better..so no! Nobody need ever stop saying that!
Pele should not have played this world cup .What à pity for the haters ! It is à great disapointment for them .Pelé proved to the world that he remains the best at 30 years old.He scored 70 goals in freekicks .More than Maradona.

@@jasoncatzim5981 What?? You have no idea what you are talking about. Pele never played in Europe??? Despite playing most of his career at Brazilian club Santos, and later with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League, Pelé did actually face some of the finest European opposition and scored lots of goals. Pelé played seven times against Benfica, which was led by Portugal great Eusébio and was considered one of the great European clubs. Santos won six of those matches, drawing the other. Pelé scored nine goals in total. Pele's team Santos toured Europe in the 50s, ‘60s and ’70s to showcase Pelé and he played against teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Roma. There were European players in all 3 World Cups he won. And he won his first at the age of 17 and scored 6 goals! Garrincha was a great player but Pele was much better...lol. Pele scored 12 goals in all 3 world cups.
@@brazilfabulous5147 I'll just narrow it short ny friend, you said it...santos TOURED in europe...that is not an official competition my friend and clubs don't take friendly matches seriously.....even club chivas (from mexican league) defeated pep guardiola's barcelona in friendly match🤷♂️...you can never compare a friendly game for fan's entertainment to an oficial competion...moreover, games from before always ended up 8-7 or 10-7 because the tactics sucked and there was no off-side..players were not trained the way today's footballers are..there is far more competition nowadays than before..simple as that..
@@jasoncatzim5981 Offside rule was actually more stringent in Pele’s playing career than it is today. The offside rule was initially introduced way back in 1863 - stating that a player was offside unless at least three players of the opposing side were in front of him. This was changed in 1925. The amended law stated that a player would be offside unless at least two opponents - including the goalkeeper - were in front of him. And that rule wasn’t changed until 1990 when a player was deemed onside as long as they were level with the last man. Pele played between 1957 and 1977. Not only would the offside rule have been in use during that period, but he would also have had to time his runs far better than players in the modern era. Else, being level with an opponent would’ve made him offside. Do your own research.
@@BethV-rx7un you copy and pasted a whole text...in any case, even if off side was introduced before like you are saying, football was slower and less tactical than modern football era and that is a fact...today defenders are tougher and faster and there are tactics involved...back then the level of preparation was very poor...especially for defenders..just a few defenders were actually good ..the majority sucked..and like I said football became more tactical...in pele's era it was normal for a game to end 10-7 or 7-6 etc...that shows you the level of defence they had back then...modern football is way more challenging...and more difficult to score....even goal keepers have top preparation nowadays...the key here is the preparation along with tactics that are now present in football...because back then although a handfull of players did prepared, there was no improved tactics. And like I said pele never showed himself in europe...one thing is to compete and the next is to do friendlies for entertainment..there is a huge diference
Eu amo o Messi, mas ele n chega perto do Pelé nunca!!

Tremendous pioneering exploits and a beautiful era in not just footballing terms, but overall.
Now, what’s amazing to observe was the cosmic evolution that football underwent in only 4 years from this point to the WC of 1974 with the advent of “total football”. It was the very clear turning point from the archaic to the modern, almost on par to the technological exploits of the 40’s and 50’s and later the 90’s onwards from analogue to digital. With more efficient refereeing Brazil could have more than doubled their goal tally from the penalty spot. Incredible the number of chance they created and the number of fouls committed on Pele - the Greatest.
Video bellissimo ❤❤❤
PELÉ. ... GÊNIO. ... ETERNO. ... ÚNICO. ... 😉😉😉👏👏👏👍👍👍✌✌✌
The greatest player of all time
Pele, the one and only goat.
Magical - just magical!
Uruguay. 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄

Great video...good to see some skills etc that I hadn’t seen before.
Rip legend Pele, God rest his soul
The best
O maior jogador de todos os tempos 🏆🏆🏆🇧🇷
My question is HOW the hell do you even think of comparing him with messi... with all due respect for Pele...
O! Another Messi-masturbator. 🤣
Not only does they disrespect Pele but all the classic game .They have never been in a stadium and have never kicked a ball and they dare jugde the players.
pele....for me football ....my bestest player...rip
Gracias Rey Pelé !!!
Pele- God's son made for football. R.I.P
Pele was always prominent! Unlike those others whose supporters try to claim his unreachable crown, they often drift in and out of the game showing only bare glimmers of his magic.
Anyone who says Maradona is better than Pele, is seriously lost and a fanatic. This was 10 years before Maradona - 70’s football isn’t all that much different from the 80’s.
RIP ONE OF THE BEST
The best team ever
viva Pelé viva o Rey
Someone just commented to me the Pele was just like Haaland. hahaha Let's put it this way, the best of Messi + Maradonna + Ronaldo #7 + Cryuff = Pelé He could dribble, had two good feet, could head, had vision, could finish and a superb temperament.
This is an exaggeration he was really complete but didn’t have the best attribute of each player .
Doesn’t have the shooting technique of cr7 or his jump , doesn’t have the control in tight spaces at a high speed of Messi , doesn’t have the lower body strength and ball protection of Maradona
@kinetickame1203 have you ever kicked a ball manufactured in the 50s, 60s, or 70s?
@@kinetickame1203 Wow, what a childish and sill* comment
The king
Brazil 1970 the best team ever and Pele the best player ever .What else do you want ?
Rivelino says than Pelé never reclaims during 70's cup if steack was hard on lunch. He was a example to every players.
Pelé o eterno 🤴
Pele the best soccer player off all times
