  • @foreseengust
    @foreseengust 4 года назад +23

    I usually apply the first few layers of oils by thinning it with solvents like turpentine. This method helps dry the layers relatively quickly. The upper layers should be thinned with oils so they dry slower so you get smoother blending and the painting doesn't eventually crack. The rule of oil painting is "fat over lean" for this reason.

  • @emilycreamer1307
    @emilycreamer1307 4 года назад +40

    Adding solvents will bring out the nuance of color in the paint. That's why the Payne's Gray looks so dark. Thinning it out will help with that.
    I recommend Gamsol as a clean up and a thinner. It's not the toxic, smelly terpintine that people associate with oil paints. (The oil paint isn't toxic to the skin, just don't eat them lol but the turpentine *is* very toxic, so use mineral spirits).
    This is coming from someone who oil paints and has taken a few oil painting classes.

  • @2020Dumpsterfire
    @2020Dumpsterfire 4 года назад +13

    As someone who loves oil painting I recommend getting liquin light gel if you want your painting to dry faster. The thing about mediums is a little goes a long long way. Temperature and air flow can both affect how your paint dries, if its really cold it aint drying and it needs air to dry because oils harden through oxidizing. Oils usually arnt the go to for any Illustrator because its not very time effective when you need to get illustrations done quick.

    Hey Kasey! Just a tip! If you use the oil included in the box(just a tiny bit will do) it will help the paint thin out and flow better onto the canvas. It makes a tremendous difference in the overall look of the painting and make the paint application a LOT easier. I used to be afraid of oil paint too, but once you figure out how the medium works it’s not half bad. Also, the more u thin the paint out with either mineral spirits or linseed oil, the “quicker” it will dry. ❤️ Hope this helps!

    I quite like the way this turned out!
    You can mix oil paints with turpentine to make it thinner instead of oil, it doesn't add sheen but it does dry a lot quicker (you can bring back sheen with a shiny varnish though). Oils dry because they form bonds with oxygen, not because the oil evaporates, like alcohol or water based art supplies do, so if you mix it with a solvent that does evaporate it will dry more quickly :)
    If building layers you should put more fatty layers over the thin layers that are mixed with turpentine, otherwise the difference in drying time will cause top layers to crack. You can also use acrylics as a base colour and do the oils on top when they are dry.
    Another tip: oils aren't entirely opaque, so adding white on top will work as a highlight, not as a pure white. Oils are great for painting transluscent and shiny things because of this (and because of the drying time, you have plenty of time to blend haha) :)
    Hope that might help someone! :)

    You can use linseed oil to thin out the pigment so you could spread it out better and also wash your brush out in paint thinner but don't leave it in for too long because the plastic may dissolve

    Def acrylic for me oddly (?) I took a paint class and we did mainly oils so I guess that's why I prefer it over acrylic (but def not watercolor or gouache)💖💗
    Tip: if able too always store oil paintings in the coldest room you have, it 'dries' faster that way then your able to layer and be done with it as a whole after words~

    I showed my mum your previous oil painting video and she wanted to give it a go herself, so I bought her the Scrawlr Box box from that vid and she's enjoying it. Her jaw dropped when I told her it could take up to 6 months for it to dry though. She's keeping them above the door frame so our cats can't get to them xD

I love watching your technique, it inspired me to try making watercolor Christmas cards for my secret Santa events this year💞

    I dont like painting with anything but water colours usually, but when i do, i do an underpainting to avoid the grain thing. The few times I've used oils, i did the underpainting in acrylic. You could do just a base colour or like a simplified layout thing.

    Oil paints are my absolute favourite 😍😍 if you want to give them a fair go use the walnut oil, it helps smooth out the oil paints. As well as the much needed paint thinners/ turpentine, (scentless spirits recommend) the turps helps thin the paint so it applys easier and better overall! (Ps I LOVE THE PAINTING DUDE! Great job 😉)

    I minored in art took painting in college. The only paint we were allowed to use was oil. Still not my favorite but the more I was forced to use it, the easier it got. It’s just the opposite of what you would expect it to be. I found it almost easier than acrylic when it came to getting a specific texture.

    If you ever use oils again and you want a super smooth canvas, get some gesso and a wall paint sanding sponge. Then just add a few layers of gesso and when it’s dry use the sanding sponge in circular motions. And also linseed actually helps dry the paint! You may not have used enough is all

    If you oil paint much, you can paint gesso on the canvas and then sand it lightly with a fine grit sandpaper and then repeat a couple more times and your canvas will be prepped for painting. It will be smooth and then you won’t have to worry about trying to fill all those tiny indentations. Although some artists like a rough canvas, especially for landscapes.

    Kasey, get two metal cups, fill one about a quarter of the way with solvent (gamsol is good), the other the same amount with the oil, and then when you want to change the consistency of what's on your brush, give it a quick dip in one of those two. That might help if there's a next time? Also get a glass palette for this--if you have like, a picture frame you don't need, the glass in that will work! Easier to clean, and doesn't waste watercolor paper lol

    Recently, I’ve used oil paint for the first time too, and I think it’s quite fun! Most people use liquin to smooth out their paints, it’s soooo satisfying! Turpentine is for cleaning, and you normally don’t use straight oil paint because it has the consistency of peanut butter (unless dry brushing. Oil paint is actually just oil and pigment! It’s non-toxic, unless you somehow manage to breath in pigment particles. Just wash your hands, and you’ll be set!

    You should try to use the walnut oil when mixing and applying the paint on the canvas, that way the paint will flow a lot better and will get into all creeks and crevices. You can also apply some of the oil with the brush to dilute the paint and remove it directly from the canvas.

  • @crownofeunoia1907

    Yeah, oil paints is a game of patience. A typical oil painting that isn’t thick takes about 3 days to dry in a cool and dry place. I had fun in college in oil painting classes but boy it was a pain having to wait for it to dry enough to layer on.

    a good tip : put down some white gesso. It'll act like a primer and you wont get as many little white spots everywhere. Also it's super easy to blend on top of.

    Copal (it's all synthetic nowadays but it works better than natural) is a great product that increases drying, increases flow, and produces a really nice sheen. It's my favorite product aside from turpentine to use with my oil paints. Also, a thin layer of oil paint can take a week or more to dry depending on the pigment in the paint you use. White and black takes FOREVER to dry, but most other colors take a week at most. In all, though, an oil painting may take a year or more to dry all the way through.

  • @burntumberarts
    @burntumberarts 4 года назад

    I don't know if anyone else mentioned it or not, but oil paints aren't toxic in and of themselves. It depends entirely on the pigment (which are used in other mediums as well). You should use the walnut oil to "clean" your brushes and then use dawn dish soap to get the oil out after you're done. No solvents necessary. Also, if you want to make your life easier, look into quick drying mediums for oils, they make the paint dry to the touch over night and make the paint flow better while painting. Gamblin even makes some solvent free versions to make it so much safer.

    My area sells Water-Soluble oils by Winsor and Newton. I've never experienced "legit" oils, but using water-soluble was really fun because you could, well, 'water' down the paint if necessary and there weren't any harmful fumes! The water addition would also speed the drying time somewhat. It was good for my intro-to-painting class, which was in an art room with literally *no* ventilation at all (quality college funding y'all!) Also, there are products that make the drying time faster, too!
    Regardless of your hesitation for this medium, that piece turned out really lovely and I enjoy the spoopy aspect of the ghosty fish

    Brave lady. I tried oil paint for basically a whole semester in art class and it wasn’t for me at all! (I ended up donating my paints to the local library.) just the whole drying time and smelliness and mess was eugh. Plus two-three week turnaround for an assignment in oils was insane. I will say having mediums helps A LOT. Most used: liquin... which speeds up drying time and thins them down. 😬😅
    Everyone kept telling me how much I’d like oils, too..... just way too impatient!

    If anyone is interested to know: there is such thing called 'retouching varnish' - you can varnish the oil painting when it's only touch-dry instead of having to wait months for it to completely cure. It still allows the oil paint to oxidise beneath it, and when it has completely cured, you can just varnish it normally again :)

    Yeah i hate oil paints as well :s my past two projects in ap have been in oil and its agonyyyy. However some things I found to be helpful for anyone interested! My art teacher gave me some tips because I was struggling a lot!
    1.) think of it like a coloring book and paint in certain spots of color, don't just paint over each layer (because the lower layers will ALWAYS interfere, and ruin any details you had)
    2.) Oil takes a few weeks to dry!! Trust me :( its tedious but as long as you work in certain areas instead of going over the ground of the canvas it works better.
    3.) Always spray your palette each day to keep the paint moist because although it doesn't dry quickly, the dabs of paint you have on your palette tend to get harder to smoothly blend colors and mix together. I find it easier when I add a lot of water and slowly add more paint to that to get the amount i want.
    4.) DONT TOUCH THE OIL WITH YOUR BARE HANDS! Oil paint is by far the most toxic paint to your skin and can cause serious health issues D:
    5.) always wash your brush off with soap and water, or paint thinner. You cant simply wash a brush out with water like acrylic or guoche, because the oil seeps into the bristles of a brush a lot, and is extremely difficult to get out, even with proper materials. If you need to get the paint out of the brush I find it easier to wear gloves, put soap on my hands, and swirl around the brush while rinsing it every so often so that you get a deep clean of the brush. Dish soap works very well for water based oils! HOWEVER! Soap and water will NOT WORK for non-water based oils. You MUST use paint thinner for these kinds (i found out the hard way)

    I am *so* glad that you also don't like oils... I *hate* working with them, I hate how long they take to dry, I hate how they're like hella toxic and you gotta be careful with literally everything you use with them
    Also, you should probably prime/gesso the watercolor paper before using oils on it but I mean that's even *more* drying time on top, but you can dry gesso with a hairdryer and you only need one or 2 coats...
