  • I recently moved into my friends 1 bedroom apartment. While it's nice living there, having privacy is nice too. We deiced to put up two walls and two doors to convert the bedroom into two bedrooms. This is a great way to hack rent and pay 1 bedroom prices for 2 bedrooms.

    Thank you, thank you! As my 8 and 11 year olds were fighting with each other once again one night ("he's turning his pages so loudly on purpose...I want the light off...he's breathing too loud"), I googled "how to turn 1 room into 2". We used your video to inspire us and, my boys now each have a room! The room was about 11 x 12, with 2 windows, so each boy gets a window. My hubby is handy, and used drywall and insulation. He also knows how to do electrical, so each boy has a light switch. Thank you so much! Our bedtimes are so much more peaceful now! (We did it 6 months ago, I'm just coming back to say thank you now)

    This is really nice work. But-- why are you wasting so much precious space on a hallway? Maybe a diagonal cut, if you're willing to give up the window. Or just move the doors up closer to the existing door of the room, to give you a few more feet for a closet bar or something.

    How did you determine how many vertical 2x4's to put behind the styrofoam walls? In other words, how do you determine how much structural integrity the wall needs? I see you have 2 between the door and the wall.

    • @hypurban
      @hypurban  6 лет назад +1

      I wasn't worried about structural integrity - the Styrofoam is extremely light, and this frame would stand on it's own, due to the fact that it was T-Shaped and fit the walls-ceiling perfectly. It wouldn't be able to fall even if it wanted to, because some part of it would bump into the ceiling or walls. (We put foam insulation on the parts that could come in contact with the walls/ceiling so we wouldn't scrape them if it bumps it)
      The verticals were determined just so each foam piece could have at least two things to screw into. There were two on both sides of the doors, so the prebuilt frames could also have something to screw into.

Whoever put their bed just inside their doorway, that should have gone towards the back where your dresser was. keeping your open floor space in front when you enter your room. an accordion door was better in this case I think.

      In my plan, the walls form a T shape, so they held themselves up. I didn't secure them to the apartment because i didn't want to damage the walls. True they are pretty small. But we spend most of the time in the living room. It IS nice to be able to goto bed later than the other without waking them up, changing, sleeping nude on hot nights, etc etc. It also has some degree of noise cancellation for things like snoring. So it's a lot better than just sharing the room in my opinion, and yeah it will never be as good as a proper 2BR.

    Very clever.
    The only real problem is increased danger in the event of a fire.

    No smoking, candles or incense and you should be fine, I suppose.

    • @hypurban
      @hypurban  9 лет назад +6

      True. I fire tested the Styrofoam - it doesn't stay lit. Though it does make extremely toxic gasses. Luckily for us we aren't smokers or the candle / incense type. So it works.
      Also: the Styrofoam is meant for building houses, but usually it's just inside of walls inside of out. So it's pretty fire-safe to begin with.

    Do you have a video on how to take this down?

    • @hypurban
      @hypurban  4 года назад

      No, but if you can build it it's very easy to take down - just go in reverse. Unscrew the Styrofoam walls first, throw screws in a bucket as you go and throw away strofoam. It's easy to cut into small pieces to hall out to a dumpster. Unscrew the metal brackets holding the walls together, in the same order you put them up in. Eventually you'll end up with a bunch of boards, screws, and brackets! The doors can be tossed hole, or sold, etc.

      @5:25 there's a cost break down. It ended up being a little more but not by much.

    So home construction/improvement is now called "hacking"?

    • @hypurban
      @hypurban  9 лет назад +3

      Since this isn't a proper bedroom addition, and it's just a "hackish" way of making a 1BR a "2BR" then yeah in this case I would call it that. But you're right that it's not always hacking!

    Did you have to drill into the floor or ceiling???

    • @hypurban
      @hypurban  3 года назад +1

      No, because it's T shaped it can stand on it's own. As you can see in the video, we put soft foam on the edges of it so it wouldnt scratch the walls.

    maybe a fire alarm behind each closed door would be good.

    you waste a lot of space.
    had you positioned the doors close to the common entrance, one of the 2 rooms would be bigger.

      Maybe they didn't want to fight over who gets the bigger room

      @@PandaSings they could've still been the same size with one having a nook by the door where the hallway was in the old design and the other a bit wider to make up for it.

      As long as they restore to original state upon departure, shouldn't run into any problem.

      in my case I had an apartment with a long living room and dining room area (one continuous room)in a one bedroom apartment. As my family grew we had 3 boys . So when my first son came along , I went to Ikea a picked up what at that time was on sale at 199.00 a 3 unit bookcase/ entertainment system. Which were really just Two Billy bookcases and ONE TV and stereo type entertainment bookcase for the center. I pulled them out away from the wall ,connected the back added wood backings later instead of that cardboard they use. lined it up from one side wall,and left a doorway open on the other end to walk in an out of the newly formed ROOM. Hung curtains using PVC pipe across the ceiling just behind the bookcases to give the feeling of a new WALL. and could go across the doorway if needed for "privacy" . Everyone who came in couldn't believe how the boys had their own room. They even had a FAUX window made from mirrors with a cornice over the top, and curtains. Still had room on the other side to divide what was left into good size spaces for living area and a dining area .

    If you have to live in quarters this small, it’s time to move. This was definitely an awesome video and very creative. It was executed well. I think would work well if you started with a large room that was at least 12x15. Maybe to divide a master bedroom.
