Awww! My father named me “Aubrey” after this song! Hated it as a kid and would hide when he played the album☺️ Danced with him at my wedding to it 25 years later...
This is one song that will bring tears to my eyes! Other songs from Bread are ""Every Thing I Own."" The Guitar Man" and many others. Thank you you could play Bread every day and I would not get tired of hearing them or David Gates.
Funny I grew up in the ghetto in the 70s I was pretty well known I once got ran over buy a fire truck and got shot in the chest and didn't die everybody thought I was this crazy tough dude and I was just lucky in the hardest times of my life when I was alone I would listen to bread all their songs if you listened to bread in the ghetto in public all your cool would be gone man bread was my and still is.
Absolutely gorgeous! David Gates' voice is like silk. "The Guitar Man" should be your very next Bread song. It is more upbeat, David sings great and the guitar player, along with the rest of the band, gets a chance to really shine. A classic!
Oh my, there are so many sadder songs than "Diary". "DOA" by Bloodrock. "The Last Game Of The Season" and "Run Joey Run" by David Geddes. "Teen Angel" by Mark Dining. "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. "Emma" by Hot Chocolate. "All By Myself" by Eric Carmen. The list just goes on and on.
This used to be my favorite Bread song. Now it's a tie between 5 or 6 songs. LOL! "Diary," "The Guitar Man," "Everything I Own" and "Lost Without Your Love" are essential! You already heard "If," even though it was a live version. Keep them coming! :) His SOLO hit, "Goodbye Girl" is amazing as well! One of the songs I wrote & recorded for a co-worker back in 2008 was inspired by that song. Mine is called "Gloria (She Never Knew)."
Everything I Own makes me cry but I still love it. Made me cry yesterday in fact. I had an errand that took me to my mom’s last apartment building and I made the mistake of looking up to what was her window- jump in the car and Bread comes on. Cried like a baby.
Greetings from Cleveland Ohio, 63 years young white lady here. Been listening to this song since 1972 when it came out. OMG, I Love you guys! This is one of my Favorite songs by Bread and it was Awesome to see your reaction to a song that I have been listening to for 52 years!!! You guys are Awesome….GodSpeed…Rock on…🎶🎸💃🏻☮️❤️🌎
Their song "Diary" is their unforgettable hit. Yes, his voice in like John Denver's in that they are both high tenors, nice clear head voices that are not using falsetto - hear the difference from the Bee Gees falsetto albums? You are getting knack of it...Peter Cetera from Chicago can sing this way too.
My father named me after this song. It was his favorite song, and he sang along to it while playing his guitar. This was always our song, and I always come back to listen after all these years.
I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It with You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Everything I Own", "Diary" "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender" & "Aubrey". In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".
You have to listen to everything I own. For decades I thought it was a love song to a woman. It was only recently did i learn he wrote the song about his Dad who just passed. Gave the song a whole knew meaning and even more beautiful if thats possible. ❤❤
Giggling...without capitals, I read Donna's post as a request to listen to all her music. I didn't know Bread had a song called "Everything I Own" until another post mentioned it. I was thinking, "Wow, Donna must have a lot of great music!"
You're right. I saw them in concert way back when and David Gates explained what the song was about before he sang it. I also thought it was a love song about a woman until then. And it does give it a whole new meaning.
I thought the same thing when I was a kid that "Everything I Own" was about a woman. After I learned that it was about his Dad that passed away, I want to cry every time I hear it now.
So many Fogelberg favorites: Believe in Me; Lonely in Love; Leader of the Band; Make love Stay; Seeing you again (one of my very favorites). His lyrics are wonderful. I love those ballads, but he also can rock and play some bluegrass. A great musician gone WAY too soon.
One of my favorite singer songwriter. One alot of people have heard but never realized was Dan is Run For The Roses..Dan had a farm in the mountains and had a love for horses. If you don't know it check it out. One beautiful song it is.
@@bobleek6975 run for the roses is a great song I see the song with two different means The obvious horse reference Or you can think of it as a girl coming of age and heading in to womanhood. With the run for the roses as a search for love
He has some really good story songs like Sweet Magnolia, Windows and Walls, Seeing You Again, and Tucson, Arizona (Gazette). There's a sweet, beautiful duet with Emmylou Harris called Only The Heart May Know. He did some great stuff with Tim Weisberg too. Lonely In Love has some really good sax. he has a ton of really good songs, but my favorite is As The Raven Flies....Joe Walsh plays guitar!
This reminds me of my late sister. We used to listen to Bread and sing along. This brought tears to my eyes. I miss her so much. You should listen to Sister Golden Hair Surprise by America. They are another awesome group. Thanks for being you, kids.
Absolutely exquisite. One of my favorite groups. Next up you should do another soft- rock group that came around the same time in the early seventies: America. They have great harmonies. Do either Ventura Highway or A Horse With No Name, their first hit. You might want a lyric video for that one.
Beautiful song... The same year this song came out another great Folk Rock song came out... Jim Croce's song "Time in a Bottle". He wrote it right after he found out that his wife was pregnant with his son.

Miscarried early in my pregnancy. It was very long ago but Aubrey was her/his name. I heard David Gates singing this on The Mike Douglas Show. I knew I was going to use that name one day. I never got the chance, just like in the song. I get a bit emotional when I listen to this song but it's my favorite Bread tune and it reminds me of an angel named Aubrey.
Looking through the comments on this video and Bread - "If.. " I start to see the same songs emerge, which are all excellent listens. But it seems no one has heard of Bread - "Dream Lady" which is such a great tune. I would also like to suggest "Been Too Long on the Road."
Love listening to Bread. Please do David Gates, "The Goodbye Girl", the theme song for the 1977 award winning movie with the same title. The song matched the movie perfectly.

You must hear "Diary". Possibly the saddest song ever written but absolutely gorgeous.
Saddest? Try "Alone again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan.
Gates' lyric turnaround when he says, " I will wish for her, HIS wife, " is heart-wrenching.
Michael Martin Murphey's WILDFIRE... and also Don McLean's VINCENT deserves votes, too.
what about bobby vinton's lonely or skeeter davis' end of the world?

LOTS of baby’s made to the Best of Bread music back in the day!
