I haven't seen the original show, but there could be parts like: he told her to get there early because of the other times she flaked, or it takes 20 minutes for the restaurant to seat her after she gets there. From her perspective there was an implied contract for a gift and she acted in accordance. When he withdrew his support, it resulted in an undo cost to her and she is seeking restitution. This case is stupid, but something not to far that would stand, a neighbor offers to paint a fence for say 500 and they agree. A week later they show up and the fence is already painted. That person spent say 100 on paint and supplies on the promise of the job. They are owed compensation. How much can be an issue of debate. Some things could be returned or maybe used for another job, but there is also travel, time, opportunity cost.
You can end up in court for anything or nothing at all. Like, you can look at someone the wrong way and they can take you to court. Now, whether they *win* their case is an entirely different matter. Note that the case was just completely dismissed, as would most stupid or frivolous cases.

Then you can respond in writing court that the case has no merit, standing, doesn't have jurisdiction (over you, subject, ...), no real damages, civil rights, affirmative defenses (fair use, freedom of speech, truth, anit-SLAP). Some of that can come with fee switching (they pay for both sides if they lose) or other penalties.

@toddgaak422 This was some fake court tv show. Not a real court, but small claims court does deal with some crazy stupid, petty things like this. From her perspective there was an implied contract for a gift and she acted in accordance. When he withdrew his support, it resulted in an undo cost to her and she is seeking restitution. This case is stupid, but something not to far that would stand, a neighbor offers to paint a fence for say 500 and they agree. A week later they show up and the fence is already painted. That person spent say 100 on paint and supplies on the promise of the job. They are owed compensation. How much can be an issue of debate. Some things could be returned or maybe used for another job, but there is also travel, time, opportunity cost.
You can end up in court for anything or nothing at all. Like, you can look at someone the wrong way and they can take you to court.
Now, whether they *win* their case is an entirely different matter. Note that the case was just completely dismissed, as would most stupid or frivolous cases.
@slayemin Someone can file for any reason, but the court doesn't need to accept it. Even if it is, you get a letter (at their cost, being served [on notice of the lawsuit]). Then you can respond in writing court that the case has no merit, standing, doesn't have jurisdiction (over you, subject, ...), no real damages, civil rights, affirmative defenses (fair use, freedom of speech, truth, anit-SLAP). Some of that can come with fee switching (they pay for both sides if they lose) or other penalties.
