      @@ZosAos Me too. I started with a 2600 and just about every version in between that and my ST. I see all these people with retro setups and sometimes I'm tempted. But thanks to emulators I can still play my favorites. And Joust! Absolutely!

    Altirra is not just the best Atari emulator, its the best emulator independent of computer. I use many emulators for almost all retro platforms(ST, Amiga, CPC,MSX,ZX,C64) but Altirra is the only emulator that I prefer to use instead the real hardware (and I have 2 Ataris). In full screen mode and using shortcut keys , the experience is pretty close to the original machine.
    Everything is so fast and easy! Changing disks, saving basic programs or drawings or game saving, skipping loading time, compatibility.
    Its just an amazing program.

    I'm using Atari800 (the name of the emulator) on Linux and it performs flawlesly. What I like about it is that it doesn't utilize drop down menus but on screen menu with Atari800 graphics.

      Yes, I agree. I worked on a Retroarch video for a while. Was going to show how you can do all your emulations (ST, 800, etc) in one. But I came back to Altirra because it works the best. Have fun.

      @TheAtariGeek  3 года назад +2

      I've tried many over the years including WinPlus. But WinPlus moved to GitHub in 2011 and then hasn't had an update since 2012. Altirra has a LOT of features and had an update in June 2020. Plus it's developed by the same guy that does VirtualDub. So I trust it fully.

      Wow. You're even more dedicated than I am. My wife's parents passed in the last year and I have been very lax in adding videos. I will add your request to a list of my pending videos and see what I can do. But be aware, I haven't used TurboBasicXL or any other Atari programming language in over... almost 40 years? But I'll give it a look. Do you already have the necessary TurboBasicXL software?
      BTW, I just searched for 'TurboBasicXL' in RUclips and there seems to be a few videos already out there. If you haven't already checked them out, you might want to take a look.

      I'm back. Go to the Altirra menu and Configure System. Then under Computer, select speed. Play with the speed adjustments you see there and see if you can get it to run okay. It could be the 'run as fast as possible' or just use the slider when running Star Raiders.

      Just checked Altirra website. A newer version was released in March 2024 (4.21). But checking the changelog, I discovered that the new release has a fix that addressed Star Raiders when using 5200 mode. You might want to check it and download 4.21 if you haven't already.

      There are several options. Under the 'View' menu, try 'Adjust Colors'. On that screen there are a ton of options. Try the first dropdown, 'Preset' first. One of those should work for you.

    I have problems figuring out which button to start the game: which key works as OPTION, which one as SELECT which one as START.
    So far I was able to play karateka because you can start that game by just pressing one of the action buttons (q,w,a,s,z,x) and * to move forward, and + to move backward.
    Would be easier if I can assign those buttons to other keys during games.

    • @TheAtariGeek
      @TheAtariGeek  2 года назад

      Unfortunately there were few standards back in the day. Different games used the same key for different purposes. Here's a discussion of Altirra key uses and mapping. It might get you in the right direction.

    • @TheAtariGeek

      Have you used the 'File' menu and then 'Disk drives' to setup a virtual storage location for documents? The first two should be the A and B drives for running the program. Then when you try and save from AtariWriter you should be able to save at the third drive.

    Hi do i really need a Cd Drive for some games in this emulator or not?

    • @TheAtariGeek
      @TheAtariGeek  Год назад

      No. In fact, with most games you can just run them from your HD. You just have to set it up as a device. Click on the File menu, then Disk Drives. There you can map to any directory you want to use as a disk drive. The game you're trying to run should be installed there.

    • @TheAtariGeek
      @TheAtariGeek  2 года назад

      Usually there is a second disk image. Sometimes you can mount it as an additional floppy (B drive). Some games will automatically detect it. Other times you may have to 'eject' the game disk and 'insert' the second game disk. Then the game will load what it needs and then ask for the game disk again. You just repeat the procedure but in reverse.

      To tell you the truth, although I started with a cassette drive in the 1980's, I haven't use the cassette function in the emulator. I took a look and it seem like you can define it and then, when prompted, use the Altirra menu to switch. It's under the File/Cassette menu.
