      Maybe Prince was just being polite and wasn’t a huge Eric fan either. Lol. Just kidding. I’m sure this guy is good. I’m not a connoisseur in music so I can’t judge. I do know Prince worked with the “best” or people he saw potential in becoming better. Prince always publicly praised a bunch of musicians I wasn’t fond of. But I too respected Prince as a musician and his taste in music ✅. That doesn’t mean I have to follow his “Leed”. Pun intended 😆

    • @beatz04

      In a way it's amazing that he became such an intergal part of Prince's sound while not really being a fan of his music. As a musician myself that kinda baffles me, because i would have thought to come up with all those horn arrangements and sax lines that fitted so perfectly with Prince's style it would have been an absolute neccessity to be in love with the music. I mean, listen to the rehearsal of Love or Money and tell me the sax/horn arrangements were not an important part of that. Or the whole Sign'O The Times tour for that matter.

    I love to hear Eric Leeds talk about his work with Prince. When he spoke at the 2002 Celebration, I was surprised when he said he didn't care for some of the music he played with Prince. I naively assumed that everyone in the band was a super fan. Whenever I am in a band and have to play something that I don't like, I honestly think about Eric and make sure I do my best on that song. Plus, I don't want to be the reason why we have to rehearse that song over and over, LOL!

      Agree. It is always difficult to have a personal relationship between a boss and an employee. When emotions are involved people are not always able to be rational and see what needs to be done professionally. Prince was always super ambitious and his career was most important. In the process of reaching his goals at all COSTs, he would do what he needed to do despite his collaboratours personal feelings. Are you joining a very ambitious working Project, it is wise to keep the detachment and selfrespect like Eric Leeds.

I think Eric Leeds had a particular set of skills (damn I sound like that movie with Liam Neeson) that Prince was more than willing to harness; in addition, I think he valued musicians who could more than stand up to Prince and Prince's high standards.

    Prince was good and he knew it. Music changes and in order to stay in the race, he had to change. It's ALL he really had, seeing his life story. Would I work with or for him? No.... Bands should be a team effort. Every member should have input. As a leader, one should honor his teammates input. I don't see Prince being that guy. A loner to the end. So hurt. Trust issues....still an awesome musician. NO MAN IS AN ISLAND. NO MAN STANDS ALONE. THAT REVOLUTION BAND WAS A SPIRITUAL CONNECTION. TO ME, THE BEST BAND EVER !!!

      If it's his band, it's *his* band. So-called co-op bands usually don't last very long because there's too many people involved in the decision-making process, slowing things down to a state of paralysis. There has to be one leader and central decision maker who is ultimately responsible for a band.

      Lali- Hi sis. Thank you for your perspective. It was enlightening and truthful. I do counseling and I help out and I'm give my time to those that are less fortunate. The one thing that I can say in regards to being honest and truthful is that it takes a tremendous amount of Courage to either say or do that which others May disagree with. I would rather live one day in my truth, Versus spend a thousand years with a lie. May peace and blessings be upon you your friend Ken :)

    Eric's style is better than the one from Maceo or Candy. I love them all. Maceo is sometimes too dominant in my perception. Once I listened to Eric's solo project - and I found it was rather boring. But in combination with Prince he was unreachable great.

    Thanks for this, I'm a huge fan of anything he does. I wish he'd do more solo stuff. It's quiet possibly my favorite period of Prince music when Eric Leeds was in the band, he's killing on 'Love or Money'. Superb tone, versatile on all saxes and flute and just seems like a cool-ass bloke.

    That was a great interview! I’m glad that he and Prince are still cool w/ each other despite the contract situations and creative differences and I’ve never heard of Lovesexy(though I’ll give it a listen). Thanks for sharing this interview clip. Once again, you nailed it, PF! I hope you show more interview clips. I give this a thumbs up.😄👍

    • @Modernaire

      Never heard of Lovesexy? That's perfectly fine. However, if you just out of the blue PICK the album and listen to it outside the context of where it's in Prince's discography, you'll lose a whole meaning, it won't really make sense. I don't think just 'oh I'll give Lovesexy a listen ho-hum' is the best way to approach Prince's music. You have to do listen, discover Prince in a linear way. I'm even suggesting you actually try to understand the society, the popular culture of Prince's time and how Prince sang, communicated TO that audience IN that time.
      I'm afraid that through modern day social media, internet Big Tech culture, that Prince's legacy is being enjoyed and re-visisted, discovered in a disjointed, fragmented way. That's why I consider fans who were THERE to experience Prince's music and art to be extremely lucky. I feel sad for for new fans... or maybe not. Mixed emotions. The fragmentation will become more and more prevalent.

      Eric worked with him before his “no contracts” phase and that phase didn’t stay around forever

    • @RnB4Sure
      @RnB4Sure 5 лет назад

      Jamifi. He didn't believe in contracts after he got duped in one he signed with Warner's that appeared to be great, but actually wasn't. He probably would have to be a slave if he was going to make any money under that contract. The record industry historically has been known as a very shady tricky business, and artists that have sold millions of records could easily find themselves broke because they didn't understand the business end of things nor their contracts when they signed them.

    Eric is to be respected for his commentary on his musical relationship with Prince which was mutual respect and beneficial for each other. Eric did what he was paid to do and didn’t want any financial benefits also. I am sure he added to Prince’s music is some ways but didn’t lose the understanding of Prince genius.

  • @garfieldharrison510
    @garfieldharrison510 5 лет назад +3

    Well that was very informative. But, being an artist myself I understood what it's like to move on once you've been in a situation for awhile. So everything he pointed about the business side of things was dead on. I appreciate his transparency about his work ethic and commitment to Prince. He was honest about not being head over heals about his music,but had reverence for him as a musician and a human being. I like how he referred to other things beside the business was crumbs. I have even more respect for Mr. Leeds. Great interview. Very insightful.

    Eric Leeds is my favorite person from Prince's camp to be interviewed, BUT with that being said, I'm still waiting for someone to mention that classic rehearsal were Prince makes fun of him and his Hawaiian shirt and the fact he came late to the rehearsal. I think the solo part wasn't to him but to Wendy, because he went on to solo for a while, but the Hawaiian shirt part, pretty sure it was about Eric. I wonder if that happened pretty regularly, because you could tell it was playful and not that serious, but to a musician's ego that can mess things up.

    Eric is real. With all of the mysticism and the like that surrounds Prince, he brings out the reality side of working with him. I like that he didn't come in with an emotional steak and these high-butterfly-feeling expectations on working with him. They both respected each other and they both were real with each other, which ultimately Prince was looking for.
    I knew I liked Eric for some reason.

    Cool. Always wanted to hear and see Eric Leeds talk about his time with Prince. Thanks for this.
    His personality always seemed stubborn to me in a great way, and a perfect collaborator for Prince partly because of the stubborn quality.
    Always thought that the song ‘Mountains’ and the vibe of the video was so fascinating and unique, one of my favorite Prince band moments but it seemed like the pinnacle of something, like the end of an era that included Eric Leeds.
    Anyway thanks again. Eric is how I expected him to be but much nicer and more generous than I’d expected. 😎
