I have one of these and it is terrible. I saw a antenna combiner and amplifier that is programmable and you can select from 3 antennas and boost each frequency a different amount.
I think he was near Milwaukee and he was getting 75 miles away
It looked really cool and I wonder if it would be able to be modified to amplify 895 to 940 mhz

Yes, with the digital standard, you either get great picture or total junk. There is little middle ground. The signal is either good enough to decode or it isn't. Where I am, I get about 90 channels on an indoor antenna and 120 on an attic one. Of these about 3 have something I might want to watch.

@@mikeblank5139maybe it's not that ridiculous. I was looking at antenna search websites the other day for new channels for the West Texas Permian Basin. And out of curiosity I decided to see how many channels big metros like the Dallas/Ft Worth Metroplex and LA get. Well, according to the Channel Master website, you can get UP TO 180 channels. Of course variables are to be considered including if say, you live near downtown LA, Beverly Hills or if you live in Orange County. And I'm guessing that unless you have a pretty robust outdoor antenna you're probably not going to get every channel. But the fact that that many channels are available is still pretty amazing

I just installed this antenna (used the linked from this channel). Everything the Antenna Man said was exactly right. The Amplifier did not make much difference what I looked at the signal meter on my tv. LG G2. This replaced an ugly rabbit ear antenna from Radio Shack I had used for years. Now you don't even see the antenna laying on the top of my table that sits below the TV. Reception is great and more importantly, it disappears. It works perfectly for the ATSC 3.0 channels as well as the digital signals. I am amazed it can pick up signals laying flat on table!!!

I live in northern nj, about 25 to 30 miles from the towers. As tyler said jt depends on a lot of factors. I started out with a basic antenna I bought at best buy. It was on a wall above the set, prob like 20' above ground level, facimg north ( antennaa iny area are se, roughly 117 deg)..
I picked up a few local channels like 2.1( cbs) and 5.1 ( fox), bc they are on uhf ( forget abc 7.1 or pbs 13.1 on vhf). I prob could have mounted it on a easterm facing wall on a sliding glass door to improve it but would have been awkward.
I then tried the anteppo bar antenna indoor, same location. Picked up more chamnels, including 9.1, could pick up 43.3 we tv,21.1 pbs. Scan said 49 channels, but not all worked well. Note that about 15 ft east of the antenna I have sliding foors, so the signal could get in.
I mounted the flat panel in my upstairs bedroom on the wall facing south. Where is there are windows facing east in the room and master bath room. Bout 35 feet up.
It picked up like 54 channels, and for for example 11.1 worked up there. Could pick up 13.1 at least sometimes, could get 33.3 most of the time.
I would definintely get a unit w a removable coax , and mount the antenna where you find the best signal &get a good quad shielded coax cable to run to the tv set. If you look on antennaweb.org, you can see where the towers are so at least you know what direction and find a way to mount the antenma oriented that way , it you have a window oriented close to that line ,try that.
Given I live in a medium range area , not surprised the indoor antennas worked the way they did, given I didnt have them in an optimal area really, plus how far I am from the signals. Height makes a difference, the higher the better,bc of trees and other structures. In a city area taller buildings can block access. Satellite radio in urban areas has terrestrial broadcasting bc of that, satellite requires a SW horizon access.
On thing to keep in mind is atmospheric conditions are big w indoor antennas. At night i could get channels I couldn't get in day. Bad weather makes it worse ( not always, sometimes improved channels, weirdly).
To give comtrast , I switched to an attic antenna ( was able to feed it to my old cable end splitter to distribute it) oriented to the south east. I fiddled with it using a small portable tv.
And I am getting 86 channels, and they come in clearly w very rare issues. One of the 3 tvs i have it hooked up to had a poor connection when I had cable (crappy wiring), yet it works great. I dont have a pre amp or inine amp, no filters , just the antenna and good quality coax.
Special thanks to tyler. I cannot recommend his recommendation service enough. He didnt try and oversell the antenna required, which was great bc a bigger antenna would have been a problem in my attic where it needed to go.we actually asked about a more expensive antenna&he said it would just be more expensive ( he recommended the channel master 45, which is well made and easy to install). I followed his other reccomendations on what to use, how to install it, how to orient it and it went without a hitch. I knew a little, but spending the modest fee was more than worth it. I am good at figuring things out but it saved a lot of grief). My SO is great with a lot of things, they contacted Tyler, but I am the handy guru *lol* ( put it this way, they ordered the report, paid for it, and asked the questions I had bc I am stubborn)
One of the big ones is dont skimp on the coax cable, use rg6 shielded coax with pure copper center conductor. The run from my antenna to the tvs is 100' plus, a😮nd the signal is still good to all the tvs ( the splitter is not powered. )

Glad to see at least a couple of flat antennas being built correctly. It's all too easy for someone to slap a cheap metal strip loop inside some plastic and call it an antenna. I've come across more than a few over the years. In my opinion, that's why the form factor gets such a bad rap. It's not that flat antennas CAN'T be good, it's that marketers know they can make a quick buck off of people who don't know any better.

For my VCRs without remotes I went to Walmart and spent a few bucks on a universal remote. They are pretty easy to program on VCRS.

Sometimes, these flat antennas, as long as you buy one of the good brands, are the best option if you must have an indoor antenna. For example, you live in an apartment building and don't have a balcony or other place to put an outdoor antenna. As you always say, building material of a home matters, and aluminum siding is the worst offender. It's not used much anymore, but older homes like mine have it. My house was built ion 1920, the guy who sold it to me bought it in 1954, and he had the siding put on. It still looks good, so I'm not going to have it replaced with vinyl siding or whatever. But getting any kind of a TV or radio signal in here is difficult.
My main antenna is one of those ClearStream indoor/outdoor ones, and it is currently outdoors, and attached to a Tablo. That brings in the most channels. I also have flat antennas from Winegard and Channel Master, which are connected directly to the two TVs. This is so I have a way to watch TV should the internet go down, because my Tablo will not work without internet. These antennas are mounted on windows, which is the ONLY way to get any signal in here with an indoor antenna. Mounting them on the wall gets me a big fat NOTHING.
And they work very well for indoor antennas. I'm about 50 miles away from the Boston towers, and these pull in most, but not all, of the stations. Definitely better than nothing if you can't use an outdoor antenna. So if I am getting this with the Channel Master and Winegard ones, this Antennas Direct one would work very well, too. The detachable coaxial cable is a plus, Channel Master's model also has it, Winegard's does not. My Channel Master Flatenna is in the living room, because i had to buy a longer cable to get it from the TV to a south facing window.. My bedroom TV is closer to a window, so the Winegard with its fixed cable works fine there.
A tip: these antennas come with some sort of mounting tape. But it can fail if put on a window subject to extreme temperature changes, such as here in New England. If you don't like the weather in New England, wait five minutes, and it'll change. The Channel Master one fell off the window, even though I cleaned the window before attaching it. Get some Gorilla Tape, and that thing isn't going anywhere, this tape can withstand changes in temperature. Just put a small piece on each corner. It has a million other uses, so I always keep some around now.

True...Mohu makes some pretty decent flat antennas -- I have 2 flat ones, 1 non-amplified and 1 amplified. As Tyler said, these types of antennas are best if you're not far from the TV transmitter towers -- like in a city.

    • @njlauren
      @njlauren Год назад

Amplifiers are one of the big myths. They cannot amplify the signal to the antenna, they amplify the signal just before the TV. The reason is the signal degrades from the antenna to the TV. If the signal is already marginal, when it goes down the coax it gets degraded further, the amplifier tries to bring it closer to the input signal at the antenna. Given a lot of these antennas use cheap coax, even a short run can degrade the signal. I think would buy an antenna w a replaceable coax and buy rg6 quad shield.
Both of my indoor antennas had amps, only made a little difference. I would recommend using a good cable, try it without the amp&with it, and compare the scans. It helped most I think when input signal quality was degraded bc of weather ime

After watching this I decided to order it from Amazon and see if it performed any better than my 10 year old Mohu Leaf indoor antenna. With or without the booster this Clearstream antenna was slightly inferior to my old Mohu. Specially in VHF. I live 25 miles from the broadcast antenna for most stations. In many cases the Directstream's signal strength was very close to the Mohu. Plus or minus 2-3%. But there was a couple of stations that the Mohu received the signal around 48% and the Directstream failed to see the station at all. I was surprised as the Directstream is physically a slightly larger antenna. But, that's the situation in my area. "Your mileage may vary" 🙂

I hate my flat antenna where I'm at internet goes out often, I'm stuck with spectrum. When my internet goes out with spectrum I always have to move around my flat indoor antenna were I don't dare fart cause the reception goes out and I'm in a tornado prone area I'm Alabama when I'm just mainly want to see weather channel. With that I might as well listen to NOAA frequencies or turn on my UHF/VHF mobile transciever and start a cq call to see information in my area.

Why when you review outdoor antennas you test out 7 channels, but only test out 4 with the indoor antennas? Can no indoor antenna pick up the other 3?

Hello. I live in North Syracuse, N.Y. 13212 I was wondering, what do you think would be the best antenna for me to buy? I have a Sony 4k oled A80J. What is the best Antenna for us. Also I was told that h. D TV's like mine have antennas built into them. I was wondering if you could explain more about that. If you could, I'm tired of paying a $135 a month for a spectrum cable.

An antenna probably won't work well in the basement, but if you'd like to try one, you can find a list of recommended antennas below: www.amazon.com/shop/antennaman/list/2LH365VAPDKLC?tag=onamztylerkle-20&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d

Hey, Antenna Man! My TV's owner manual says that I will get a better picture and sound if I use an HDMI antenna. Does such a thing actually exist in reality? All I am finding in the marketplace are coax antennas. What gives?

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 месяцев назад

That must be a misprint. There's no such thing as an HDMI antenna. An antenna connects to a tuner with a coax cable. HDMI is mainly for streaming devices like a Roku or Firestick.

If they come from a reputable company, they can be good. I don't have this one, but I have flat antennas from Channel Master and Winegard. The only downside about the Winegard one is the lack of a detachable cable. Channel Master's has this, as does the Antennas Direct one that is reviewed here. It's definitely a huge plus.
I can't believe that some people buy those cheap Amazon antennas. A lot of them, I have noticed, have logos for channels like CNN and ESPN in their product descriptions, implying that if you buy their junk antenna, you will get those channels. Of course, you're not going to, because CNN and ESPN are cable channels and no antenna on earth can get them. If you want those channels, you will have to pay for them, no legal way around it. The five atar reviews? Bought and paid for. I've bought things from Amazon (not junk antennas, though), where later I received an offer to get a gift card for more than what I paid for the item, in exchange for a five star review. Even if I like the thing, I never do it. You can't trust Amazon reviews any more. This is why we need Antenna Man and people like him, the best way to get honest reviews from people who know what they are talking about,

I compared this antenna to a cheapo flat panel Amazon antenna with a very skinny cable (the ones that Antenna man hates). It’s basically a bow tie antenna between sheets of plastic. Reception were exactly the same for me so I returned this one as it was more expensive.

The day l see ANY indoor antenna, amplified or not, be on even footing with an outdoor, masted antenna, I'll eat my flipflop.
Now, press resume and hope I'm right. Really not in the mood for Flipflop Parmesan tonight!

I use the Pennyloop design antenna l mad myself out of 6ga bare copper grounding wire on 28ft mast. My furthest dependable channel is 93.5 miles with no reflector.

You can get all channels with an indoor antenna if trees surround your property but they won't be as reliable in bad weather or on windy days as the trees blow around - hence why I recommend an attic or outdoor antenna setup in this situation.
