It's a democratic republic. There are a few different kinds of democracies, a Republic can be one.
Demos means ppl. The US constitution protects the rights of the Ppl to pursue their own meaning (happiness), so America is a democracy in that sense. And the government is of the ppl, by the ppl, for the ppl, so it's a democracy in that sense.
But it's not a direct democracy in terms of how laws are past.
But America is a democracy. It's a democratic republic.

I mean this with no ill intent and I express my condolences that this sort of violence is taking place in your country.
As an Australian, we may not have a say in your election, but we most definitely hold stakes, being one of your closest allies and with a great history between our two nations.
In 2009 I visited the United States of America for the first time, and did so on and off for several years very frequently. I would praise your country to my fellow Aussies and was proud of our alliance.
Right at this minute, I’m sad, I’m sad that there is so much hatred, I’m sad that the division in your country is now trickling into ours and the rest of the west, I’m sad that instead of standing strong together like we have done for many years, we are now fighting one another.
Regardless of what our political beliefs are, this attitude we have adopted has been fuelled by people who do not have our best interests at heart and simply seek to profit of us by spewing rhetoric and propaganda, and this has absolutely occurred on both sides of the spectrum. No one can deny this.
Please my American friends, let’s start trying to find our way back to the centre, radicalism on both sides is hurting us, it’s making us weak, allowing others to become stronger.
Let’s actively work together to stop fuelling this negativity, I wish the best for all Americans and I wish the same for my country. But we need to somehow, find our way back to what unites us, not what divides us.
