I've said it before, and I'll say it again: From Spaced to Baby Driver, and beyond, Edgar Wright is one of the most original directors working today. I've already taken a look at his first studio feature film, Shaun of the Dead, and why it's still today such a brilliant genre-blending comedy. Today, I'll be looking at his next film: Hot Fuzz, my personal favorite, and one of the greatest buddy cop action comedies ever made. Specifically, I'll delve into many of Edgar Wright and Hot Fuzz's filmic influences that helped shape the young director and his movie into what it is.

Hot Fuzz is one of the few films I'd consider perfect. That doesn't mean it's the _best_ film, or even my favourite, but that it accomplishes exactly what it set out to do in the best way possible. There's no tweak to the film you could make it that would improve it.
I know what you mean and totally agree. Wright has said his only regret was that the car chase to the model village wasn’t quite long or exciting enough. Which like, sure. But that’s pretty darn good if that’s the only thing that could be conceivably improved upon.

I like the movie, but the ending was ruined by the extra bomb at the end. The movie seems to end, you thinks it is over, and then there is another bomb, so you have two endings, and it was disappointing. They just went too far.

The scene where Cart/Wainwright disapprovingly both move off screen, only for one to duck back on then look disapprovingly again. Epic.
Hot Fuzz is the best in the Cornetto Trilogy. I have watched this twice as much as the other two movies in the series.
Personally I think Shaun of the Dead is the best in the Trilogy but the other two are just as good

If I may ask the people who obviously like the third film as well. What's draws you in and keeps your interest? I had trouble watching it to the end once and for me it's not that funny or interesting. While Shaun was good and Fuzz was brilliant.
Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are a truly great comedy team too. Their role playing is pretty consistent across films - "Paul" is a great example of this from a different director.
Although these days Simon Pegg is busy hanging out with Tom Cruise and never, ever expressing an opinion about Scientology.

This and Galaxy Quest I think are prime examples of love letters to genres and specific movies. They're both brilliant movies that have held up so well. I think it's mainly due to the fact they genuinely respect, understand and apprecite the source materials for all their strengths and flaws!

Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim are two of my favourite examples of top notch filmmaking. Not just the writing and directing, but all the cuts, interstitials, jokes, pacing, everything. They're perfection.
YES! The rate in which Scott Pilgrim fires its jokes, puns and just clever gags from every angle and in every direction is mind-melting. It's everywhere, from the images, cuts, editing as such, music, sound FX and of course dialogue & acting. It's incredibly rewatchable, much like Hot Fuzz (Pegg & Frost even have a cameo in the Scott Pilgrim series)
My favourite example of this from Scott Pilgrim is the sequence where Knives goes to his apartment to find him and the door is answered by his roommate. That whole exchange where Scott is kinda visible, then hidden, then jumps out of the window and leaves behind Knives is so well choreographed that you almost forget about the dialogue, which just reinforces the humour of the situation.
This and Every Frame A Painting’s take on Edgar Wright’s work are both top notch. Thanks, Danny. Love your essays.
Something else I love about this movie is how it parodies the quick and almost incoherent editing that many actions movies did at the time like Jason Bourne but ironically somehow manages to be coherent than the films it's parodying. I hope that one day I'll become just as good of a director as Edgar Wright, it's very unlikely but a man can dream. 😔

Hot Fuzz is definitely my favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy. I didn't even like it all that much upon first watching, but my roommate would put it on a lot, and it wasn't until I started noticing all the little details and callbacks upon repeat viewings that I realized just how amazing it was. Edgar Wright is now one of my favorite directors.

They made the worlds end, which wasn't that well received. Edgar Wright also went to work on other projects, such as baby driver.

Hot Fuzz is my favourite movie of all time, I sometimes chuckle like a maniac when I think about a scene.
The use of Adam Ant in the opening montage is only its first touch of cinematic brilliance.

Hot Fuzz is quite possibly the best movie of all time, objectively speaking. Very few that I've introduced it to haven't declared it their favorite and fewer still haven't at least had it in their top ten. That's a lot of double negatives, but I'm sure at least one person will understand.

My mum lives in the small rural city of Wells, Somerset where Hot Fuzz was filmed, and it is the pride and joy of the community. People from our county quote it constantly.
A few weeks ago they screened it on an inflatable cinema in the Bishops Palace garden where they shot the sinister “greater good” scene ❤

Excellent work, as always! I've espoused my belief for years that Hot Fuzz is Wright's & Pegg's best film, but it only works if you've seen the references (especially Shaun of the Dead). It's like how The Empire Strikes Back is great, but you miss so much of it if you've not seen A New Hope.
I agree it’s important to see the first but not absolutely essential each movie should be able to stand by itself and they do. Today watching a movie is like signing a mortgage!
I don't think this is necessarily true, my whole family loved Hot Fuzz and they saw it before having seen Shaun of the Dead. I also find it the easiest to introduce to friends out of the three.
@@BooksMusicMe17 Poor word choice on my part. Hot Fuzz doesn't "only" work if you've seen Shaun of the Dead; that's the whole premise of this video. It does, however, exponentially increase the viewer's enjoyment when they get all the jokes.

Hot Fuzz and Mr Robot, two of the best ways a director copy/stole from other movies but instead of plagiarizing, they made it their own.

@@horizoniki a lot. I don't want to spoil anything but he got a lot of inspirations. There is a video explaining how Sam Esmail incorporated a lot of famous movies and TV shows in Mr. Robot by Wisecrack. It's really good.

@@horizoniki Watch all 4 seasons. The second one is a little slow on first watch, but it's definitely worth it. One of the best TV shows ever made and an absolute massive entry on the Cyberpunk Genre.

I really wish they had done the same as they had in the Spaced series DVD extras, a Homage-o-Meter, showing which movies they payed homage to at which point. I found that fascinating in Spaced because I didnt even know half of them at the time.

Hot Fuzz is basically Princess Bride for cop movies. Perfectly lampoons the genre while simultaneously doing the tropes better than the source material.
This film makes me just beam with delight- especially that final high octane third.

Great video essay! I hope one day you'd consider doing one of The World's End. It's an underrated masterpiece in my opinion, it doesn't get as much attention as Shaun or Hot Fuzz, but the movie has the strongest emotional core from the three.
I didn't like World's End much the first time I watched it. Maybe because I was expecting something closer to Shaun and Hot Fuzz. But on rewatch I couldn't agree more about it's emotional core being the key why it's a different experience. It's not meant to be "funny", it's deeper than that.
I think it's a good film, but the weakest of the three, however you're absolutely right on it having the strongest emotional core.
No matter how many times I watch Hot Fuzz, the blend of tones when Danny tells Angel to take his car and leave (highly dramatic) blended with the "Judge Judy and Executioner" line kills me

You've completely misunderstood this film when you say it "make you think all its ideas aren't stolen".
The many many references are neither "stolen" nor concealed - they _want_ you to discover and enjoy these.
You take it way too literally. It's pretty clear he doesn't mean it in a negative way, the whole video is nothing but praise and appreciation of the film.

What I love is not so much the action homage, but the Rom Com. Underdiscussed, but there are so many bits, inviting him in for coffee, the longing glances, the taillight illuminated look as he drives off, etc.
The number one thing I’d take away is that nostalgia is not always a toxic impulse but exactly what drives the people who make the best art. If anything people like Edgar Wright and Tarantino or Jon Favreau among many others are great examples of how being a total nerd for nostalgia is a great thing. I remember having chats with friends when I was a kid inspired by all the action movies we watched and how we would make action flick. To me Edgar Wright is what you get when you follow through and keep going. Anyone out there feels that spark should follow it.
It's not "nostalgia" they're nerds for it's movies and specific genres of movies, nostalgia is a meaningless word.

Hot Fuzz is one of the best comedies I've ever seen, and have rewatched it countless times b/c it's THAT good.
Hot Fuzz is one of the tightest, most technically proficient, and well rounded movies of all time. Slam dunk. 10/10 for what it is.
One thing I liked about Hot Fuzz is that it makes fun of the English countryside experience, but in a quite affectionate way that obviously shows they understand it; the fact Wright lived in Wells does not surprise me. There is too much media that either romanticises the countryside or treats everyone as stupid yokels.

Tony Scott made great movies. Spy Game is my favorite. It’s a great example of story-within-a-story but also very clever with its presentation and characters.

I'd like to add that along with everything else, I live about 30 minutes away from where Hot Fuzz was filmed/set and it is an absolutely perfect characture of this part of england that only people who live here will probably truely appriciate
Hot Fuzz is literally The Wicker Man. Holier-than-thou policeman arrives in small town, discovers that locals are unhelpful, begins to realise that locals are a little bit insane and then gets fucked over by the locals.
And The Equalizer himself is in it too.

You skipped Hong Kong "bullet ballet" films entirely, which a lot of the US '80s/'90s action movies themselves referenced or outright stole from. Drop Zone and The Last Boy Scout are the earliest movies I can recall that borrowed liberally from John Woo, whose influence was undeniable.

My fav of the Corneto Trilogy
I remember seeing Hot Fuzz in the theatre with my mom-- I grew up raised on 80s and 90s movies that my parents liked, and seeing something that so brilliantly paid homage to so much of that was an amazing experience for us to share. Probably the most my mom and I have ever laughed together that I can remember.
Edgar Wright has been such a brilliant filmmaker and so incredibly inspiring for me too!! Thanks for making this video essay that adds on to another layer of why I love Edgar Wright's films

When I was a kid I remember there was one summer where me and a friend watched hot fuzz (or its directors commentary) like every day for 2weeks straight. I think it really speaks to how packed the film is that we were still noticing new jokes even nearing the end of that spree.
I think that something that is truly brilliant is your ability, Danny, to so perfectly articulate and communicate the choices, direction, and artistic talent of the directors. You are, by your own right, an excellent director of your chosen medium.

I love the grandma kick scene in Hot Fuzz. Edgar Wright in an interview said that after filming it, he could feel one or a few clips added to the sequence would really take it home and then had to do some convincing to get the extra half day or so of filming for it. thank goodness for the dedication to his vision because he got the clips he needed and its a really great grandma kick scene
Its so inspiring watching how edgard perfected his craft to that level, but it also tell us that he already had the idea, just not the technique!
It's actually amazing to me how much pastiche Wright gets away with without somehow sacrificing originality and without making you giving you that feeling of cultural exhaustion that such films often elicit. He's the best at what he does.

I got to see this film on a cold night in Wells, outdoors, projected on a screen on a field, just behind THAT Somerfield, and just a 2 minute walk from the wonderful high street 🙂. 2007/2008 ish. Happy days.
I have just seen this and I love the talk. One of the other things that I love about the movie is that it takes a lot of things about Gloucestershire towns and villages and the west country culture and weaves them into the film. Anyone who isnt there will get the jokes (the accent for example) but there are a lot of subtle references to the villages of the area in it-(there are actual model villages in Bourton on the Water for example) which make it funnier for those from the area.
"Show me" being the first line you use from Hot Fuzz, and in response to your own train of thought is some crisp editing

I don't think I go a week without a hot fuzz reference. It's definitely a top 5 for me.
Its honestly one of the greatest films of all time. When i first watched it i loved it, then i watched it again and loved it more, then again and even more and now i must've seen it a few dozen times and its arguably my favourite film ever.
Hot Fuzz is always gonna be a classic! I was in a hotel the other night after a long day of working and a long night of drinking, i turn on the TV and it was on, great way to end the night haha :)

Hot Fuzz is a masterpiece in comedy writing
This is one of the most re-watchable films of all time. There's SO much detail in what's happening, what's said and what the actors are doing that you won't get it all on the first, second or even third viewing. I've seen this movie at least 20 times and I still laugh at something I missed the first 19 times I saw it. Edgar Wright was the original director hired to do the first "Antman" and I do wonder how that would have turned out. My understanding is that the studio and he couldn't see eye to eye on how to shoot it. I imagine Edgar wanted to do more of a comedy spin and the studio didn't quite want to go that far, though the version they got does have quite a bit of comedy in it.
Hot Fuzz is my favorite movie to watch and reference when I just want to relax and laugh. So quotable.
Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson are so unique and distinct you can tell within seconds of the film hands down my two favorites.
when I was a teenager the first movies I ever recorded off tv on vhs were Highlander and Bloodsport. I must have seen both movies hundreds of times each.
Hot Fuzz is the only other movie I watched nearly as often.
Wright Pegg and Frost and all those who sailed with them. From Spaced to Baby Driver to Mission Impossible and beyond. I have really enjoyed the ride these guys have taken us on.

I've lost the count of how many times I watched Hot Fuzz. It's a masterpiece
3:49 I believe the switch happened just a tad earlier with the red taillights of the car lighting them up red just like the scene reminiscent in Goodfellas with the red taillights where there was no going back to the way things were.
I honestly think this is still one of the best movies ever made. And it gets better with each rewatch
My wife and I saw Shaun of the Dead on a whim, knowing nothing about it, about Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, nothing. Walked out massive, instant fans. But going into it, Hot Fuzz seemed like a very different thing for him to take on. And yet... it is such an incredibly crafted film that it seems completely effortless. It walks all these genre boundaries and crossovers perfectly and entertains with every frame. It just doesn't get much better, you know?

This is by far my personal favorite trilogy of films. But if I was going to be marooned on a deserted island and had to choose just one to take with me it would be Hot Fuzz.
The strange thing about Hot Fuzz is that I didn’t really think much of it when I first watched it. It was only after repeat viewings that I grew to really like it, then really really appreciate it.
It's absolutely awesome how Hot Fuzz is basically just a higher budget version of a previous film. Inspirational even.
