On July 26, 1943, Los Angeles was blanketed by a thick gas that stung people’s eyes and blocked out the Sun. Panicked residents believed their city had been attacked using chemical warfare. But the cloud wasn’t an act of war. It was smog. So what is this thick gray haze actually made of? And why does it affect some cities and not others? Kim Preshoff details the science behind smog.
Lesson by Kim Preshoff, directed by Juan M. Urbina Studios.

I live in Santiago de Chile, a city historically affected by smog. The city lies in a valley, which makes the problem worse. In the last years, luckily, the cases of extreme pollution have dropped significantly thanks to state policies, but there is still a lot to do.

Hi, generally a good video. However, nitrous oxide (N2O) is not the same as nitric oxide, also know as nitrogen dioxide (NO2 or N2O4 since it exists as a dimer), which is what the real problem is in smog. This is often represented as NOx. These are very different compounds with completely different properties. They are as different as water and hydrogen peroxide. Nitrous oxide, is a colorless, nontoxic gas, in fact it is used as a dental anesthetic. N2O4 is a reddish gas which is highly reactive, corrosive, and toxic. It would also be reasonable to refer to the compounds in smog as "nitrogen oxides", if you prefer. Please correct this.
