my mom is from a romanian community in serbia. they had a romanian orthodox church and the government treated them well. my mom spoke both, serbian and romanian. before she died she wanted to go back home. she didnt remember cyrillic. i leanred it. fluently like i can read it as fast as english. my thought was that id learn all 31 letters and read them to her as we drove along. she didnt survive. my culture still lives. i love this song. it brings me home

Interesting how "daleko" is same in Serbian and Polish. :O in fact, there are so many similarities that many words in this song are completely intelligible to me, as I'm someone who knows Polish. So I don't even need the Serbian to English lyrics for many words. I already understood some things before looking at the translation. :O :O :O
We have many similarities, both slavic languages so yeah :) Daleko(Far), Duboko(deep), Razvila(evolved/blossomed) Ruzo/Ruzice(Rose), Rumena(ruddy) etc etc..

Probably beacuse of kosovo. Albanians always claim kosovo is theirs, and some parts in the world claim kosovo is indipended, but serbia claims its part of the serbia(wich is true). Besides that its probably beacuse of history like battle of kosovo 1389, serbian uprisings and first world war 1. What people dont know is europe would be entire islamic beacuse of ottomans(todays turks) if serbs didnt cut their way durning battle of Kosovo where milos obilic kills sultan murat and he eventually pays it with its head. Serbian uprisings were been so effective on the ottomans that they almost got their indipendece, with leadership of the karađorđe, but soon they lost.

When I first heard this song I wondered if it was Czech or Slovak because the language sounds so similar, also the script of the title! :D Then found out it's actually Serbian. I thought Serbia had kyrillic script? Anyways, it's absolutely beautiful
Serbian use both Cyrillic and Latin script
The person who posted this posts folk songs from several countries. The original upload of this song by the group who sings it was in Cyrillic, but then later uploads by other people used Latin instead. Serbian is written in Cyrillic but also Latin is common. During Yugoslavia the official language was called Serbo-Croatian which was basically a Latin-written dialect of Serbian.

Poles and Serbs are twin brothers. We were always together until history separated us. There are few chronicles about Slavs from the old days. There are two main theories about the origins of our nations. The first is that some Serbs from the Danube escaped from persecution to the north. Those who settled between the Oder and Vistula rivers became Poles. Those who followed the Oder were called the Lusatian Serbs but were eventually Germanized. The second theory is that we lived side by side in today's Poland. White Serbs lived in Wielkopolska. Wielkopolska is the cradle of Polish statehood. For Poles, it is what Kosovo is for Serbs. To this day, there are towns of Sarbia and Sarbinów in Wielkopolska. When the Poles began to lay the foundations for the future state, some Serbs went west - the Lusatian Serbs. Some Serbs went south and settled in the Balkans, giving rise to the state of Serbia. I love Serbia. If I ever get married, it's only to a Serbian woman. This is my destiny. The two halves of the heart that once broke up somewhere will finally find each other.
