Just a follow up to your segment. A year later in 1970. Pride was originally called, "Gay Liberation Day." There were only 4 major american cities that hosted a coming out pride parade that year. NYC, Boston, LA, San Francisco.
Fast forward till today. Every american city has a pride parade. From Anchorage Alaska to Honolulu Hawaii. From the most staunchest conservative red states, to the most open minded liberal.
Pride Parades have also been imported abroad. Japan, S. Korea, Thailand, Philippines. Are some of the largest in Asia. Latin American pride parades in Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, Colombia, Buenos Aires. Are the most heavily attended.
    Pride has gone global.

Not really Pride has gone global, there are 76 countries that have homosexual laws against gays, 6 of which the penalty is death. Most are Muslim controlled countries. And we need to fight that injustice in those countries. China doesn't allow gay right or same sex marriage, so #boycottChina

I watch your videos just to see my name at the end. I’ll do a Chorus Line kick with you any day. I’m proud to be a kick line gay weirdo lol. I’ve been called a lot worse in my life. One day, I will have to tell you about my wild experience the last time I was in NYC !!! On a serious note, I wish this video would go viral. I think the LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 community needs to be reminded of this because our rights are always under threat, especially in light of what Clarence Thomas said in his Roe v Wade statement. The world blames us for all that is wrong in society and in some countries it is still illegal to be gay. Our fight is never over. Thank you, Tom, for being being an ally !!

The one thing you, Tom did not cover was when the "lesbian/gay march" first left Christopher St to protest and celebrate in less friendly environs such as Midtown. I confess I do not remember myself, but do recall myself marching up Fifth Ave in either 79 or the early eighties. Thanks and cheers.

OK... I'm a subscriber. I enjoy your videos. And you got some things right in this video, BUT as for why June 28th, 1969 was the powder keg it was, you totally missed the mark... COMPLETELY! Judy Garland is a gay icon and was always friendly to our community! She started in the Wizard of Oz in 1939 which was an early movie that showed men in non-masculine roles (The Cowedly Lion, Scare Crow, The Tin Man) Gay men were drawn to that movie and drawn to Judy Garland. In the in 1940s, 50s, 60s gay men used a phrase to communicate to another person to see if they were gay and only other gay people knew the phrase and could respond appropriately. "Are you a friend of Dorothy?" Well... On Sunday June 22, 1969, Judy Garland died by suicided in London. The Stonewall Inn had been raided many times before, but this time was different. THIS is why that following weekend was a powder keg that is was Gay people were distrait over this huge loss of an ally. And it was the lesbians and drag queens who stood up to the cops! (Side note: this is why most gay pride parades start with Lesbians' and drag queens in front out of respect of their actions in the Stonewall riots.) They had had enough. They just wanted to morn Judy Garland, but the cops came in to harass them like they usually do. Lesbians' normally don't take crap from anyone, and the drag queens were pissed off, and that started the Stonewall Riots. THAT started the modern gay rights movement. Not the mobster's owning a gay bar, which is something that I never knew before about the Stonewall Inn, but was the same here in St Louis, but you focused a lot on that, and it had nothing on what happened that day at the Stonewall riots! It was about people distraught over Judy Garland Death and harassing cops. And that why it because a power keg for violence that night. That is why June 28th happened at the Stonewall Inn. There are plenty of books written (and a few movies and documentaries) on this subject. I get you are not gay. But I would suggest seeking out people from what ever subject mater you are doing a video on, to make sure you get the story right. This year, at my work, the new diversity manager reached out to me to learn more about pride month, and it's history, for their June Diversity Email to the origination for Pride Month.

Dear old Mom wonders why didn't a female ever SEE my son. Because there's so little love. They have enemies. Not surprising. They demand that reproduction is 'the way'. BUT "the way" blades the lands of balances resulting in pandemics. And in these times, you cannot feel loved where there's only 24 hour supplies of food. They even go so far as to scorn "The Lord". It's no wonder that they have enemies.

Coming from a straight person, Happy Pride, brother! It's a damn shame that we live in an intolerant society full of self righteous Conservative Republican people that's not willing to let the LGBTQ communities be themselves. Just remember that you have jealous, envious, and hateful assholes that will always find ways to show malice because their lives are not where they want it to be. I mean, some LGBTQ people and I have had our differences in the past, but living around intolerance and hate all the time is no way for a human being to live. As a proud 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 member, I actually went back in 2019 but unfortunately I didn’t get to see the actual parade….only the surrounding parties (my cousins who had went in 2018, thought the parade was boring, and didn’t think to tell me until we got on the train going to the city, that we were only going to the parties) so I missed out on the true NYC pride experience. Then 2020 it was cancelled, last year there was an impromptu parade which I also missed, and this year I’m gonna miss it again due to Covid still being around, as well as Monkeypox, and the whole crime rate rising again. So hopefully next year I’ll be able to go, and it will be better.

Great Video! I attended Xavier High on 16th Street an easy walk to the Stonewall Inn. The Stonewall Riots took place between my Junior and Senior Year. Where was I when it took place? Doing the college tour at Holy Cross and BC! The next summer I was working in lower Manhattan saw the announcements of the first Gay Liberation Parade posted in many places. Unfortunately, I missed out on making history then. However, I had a wonderful time participating in the 1978 NY Pride Parade marching with the UCONN group. When we got to the Sheep Meadow I got to watch Grace Jones ride a motorcycle up onto the stage to perform. It was wonderful! In April 1993, I also took part in the March on Washington marching the college where I worked. Another great experience! The decade 1969-79 was a Golden Age of LGBTQ+ liberation in the U.S. Two useful sources of interest are George Chauncey's "Gay New York: 1890 - 1940" and Charles Kaiser's "The Gay Metropolis" that covers the period after 1945. And, of course, there is Martin Duberman''s great class "Stonewall". He analyses the lives of half a dozen LGBTQ+ people whose lives intersected during Stonewall.

Great video. I think it’s badass that people stood up to corrupt police. That took some bravery and some not today mofo energy that is rare at any point in history.
