The more i see the snake and the girl it reminds me the story of Legend of the White Snake. A Chinese folklore, originally a horror tale but turns into a forbidden love story of a man and a demon snake woman. The girl represent the daughter of the man and the demon snake. I don't know how to explain this based on the scene but i get the feeling that they are on a journey to find the meaning of life after the death of the man who is mortal while his wife and daughter are immortal and half-immortal.
