THIS is the sound Bob Wootton shouldve gone for after Luther died. Not whatever tf we got. Tbh I dont listen to anything past '68 since it just doesnt have the same boing that Luther had.
Like all other Cash/Luther fans, l have many favorite Johnny Cash songs, but if someone was holding a pistol to my head and told me to choose my very favorite, it wound be Big River. This is AWESOME guys.
You've captured that distinctive sparse elemental beat and tone that Luther was known for ever so well. While they may have played the same songs, I don't believe his replacement got close to Luther's subtle inflection. The other JC songs you've done are great as well Tennessee Flat Top Box is inspirational. Would love to hear them played live. Great stuff thanks for all your hard work putting the videos together.
Thank you very much man! I really appreciate this comment, and it's great to hear that my videos are appreciated by fellow Perkins enthusiasts! It gets me motivated to make more videos, thanks again!
Sometimes I watch/listen to videos, and once it's over, I think, "Now that was a waste of 3 minutes of life that I'll never get back".. This was _not_ one of those times! Very enjoyable. Good job!
it's a lot of fun to just hum or think the song along with it and hear the chord changes and runs coinciding with your mind. 8-) Makes me want go go out and find me a local country music show tonight. We have several in my area, not far from Ft. Knox. Again, fine job!
Great video! I really like that you played the brush drums instead of using a drum track. I wish I could do that myself. Years ago I saw Johnny Cash live in concert, with Bob Wooton who replaced Luther. His great drummer W.S. Holland was also with him. He was so great to watch and listen to. I've loved the sound of the brush drums ever since.
Your playing is good but that Super Reverb is what grabbed my immediate attention lol 😆. It sounds fantastic!!!! I keep telling myself I don’t need one but damn 🤦♂️. I had to sell my Twin Reverb a few years ago and miss it dearly. I may try a super next time though. There’s just no reproducing that tube spring reverb unless you got the real deal 👍🏻
Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky And the tears I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River And I'm gonna sit right here until I die I met her accidentally in St. Paul (Minnesota) And it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawl Then I heard my dream went back downstream cavortin' in Davenport And I followed you, Big River, when you called Then you took me to St. Louis later on (down the river) A freighter said she's been here but she's gone, boy, she's gone I found her trail in Memphis, but she just walked up the bluff Raised a few eyebrows and went on down alone Now, won't you batter down by Baton Rouge, River Queen, roll it on Take that woman on down to New Orleans, New Orleans Go on, I've had enough; dump my blues down in the gulf She loves you, Big River, more than me
Tom Frost Hi, thank you very much! That's a Fender American Vintage '65 Jazzmaster straight through a RI Super Reverb. I think the settings are: vibrato channel with bright switch up, volume 4.5, treble 4, middle 8, bass 4, reverb 3.5.
Great tone man, can I ask what the settings are on the super reverb and jazz master?. The sound has subtle differences to an Esquires attack click if that makes sense!
Thank you very much! I am using a Shure SM57 which i know Luther used for live recordings, but i also blend the Shure with a large diaphragm condenser mic, that picks up every single detail of my amplifier perfectly, i guess you can use any kind of large diaphragm condenser.
Blu_Is_A _Name Thank you very much for the comment! I use the reverb on the Super Reverb amp - Luther Perkins also used a Super Reverb. The guitar I'm using is a Fender American Vintage '65 Jazzmaster.
On this particular song, i'm picking on both at the same time, some times single hits, some time double hits and even triple hits at times, but double hits the most. I've been listening to many Big River versions, and Luther plays differently on every single on of them.
ok cool. btw did you make a video on picking? Because on the video lesson i posted recently i tried to cover the different styles of how ive seen it done, listened too, and had a guitar teacher listen and tell me and i don't want to be wrong on it.
Btw: I saw you were wondering about my recording set up! Sorry for not answering, but here it is: I have a soundcard called Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 which is an amazing microphone pre-amp platform. Through the soundcard i record my amplifier with a microphone in front of my amp, and then film myself while playing:)
Hey! The big one hanging on the side of the hi-hat there, is a Studio Project C1 condenser mic, and the one attached to the snare drum, is a Samson drum mic, from the Samson 7kit drum mic set. They are both relatively cheap mics, alltough the Studio Project can be hard to find some times. If you're looking for a condenser like that one, i would go for the Røde Nt1.
I know I'm young but I got a correction. I heard this from the original During the solo, you did the b7 section wrong. After you do the E section (into riff) you hit the 2nd fret of the A sting (A2). Next you hit A1 than A2 D1 A2 D1 A2 D1, that the intro riff again. Do you really have to do this? Na, Luther probably did what you did it later on. Keep Rocking :)
GRG | Get Rhythm Hi. My name is Kenny Dobbins. I love the way you are playing in this recording. I have a chance for a recording contract as I know W.S. Fluke Holland personally only through talking to him over the phone, but he is a distant cousin of mine, and him and Johnny Cash were music therapy for me growing up as I Autistic. I asked him if he can help fulfill my dreams of being a Country/50s Rock style singer. He told me to record a demo, and send it to him, and that he would not give up until he found a company that would sign me to a contract. He is going to be my drummer, so I was wondering if you would be interested in joining my band when that happens and going professional, but I do have to tell you one thing. I play Acoustic Guitar, and W.S. Holland is going to be the drummer, so I wondering if you would like to play Electric Guitar or Bass in my band. Thanks.
You need to go back over this and add a guitar playing the melody......then you have a finished product...or have an electric piano playing the melody....only real Perkins/Wootton fans get this.....
Gorden Scottfan This is a video about Luther Perkins style of guitar playing and it shows how this song is played with Perkins’ playing in centre. By adding melody on top would shaddow what I’m trying to demonstrate.
Luther would be proud to see that we still listen and admire his work
This is the closest Johnny Cash sound i've ever heard!
Thank you very much!
Sounds just like Luther Perkins style of picking
@@GetrhythmgausdalIf only you had someone who could sound like Johnny Cash. Can you also do Folsom Prison Blues and I walk the line
I think Luther would be VERY happy with this!
Thank you very much for the comment, appreciate it!
THIS is the sound Bob Wootton shouldve gone for after Luther died. Not whatever tf we got. Tbh I dont listen to anything past '68 since it just doesnt have the same boing that Luther had.
I agree. Luther gave Johnny Cash that distinctive BOOM CHIC A BOOM sound that made Johnny Cash famous.
I'm not sure how many times I've listened to this rendition, but it is the best I've heard ever. The guitars sound just great. wow!
Like all other Cash/Luther fans, l have many favorite Johnny Cash songs, but if someone was holding a pistol to my head and told me to choose my very favorite, it wound be Big River.
This is AWESOME guys.
I love big Big River I play it on my MUSE.
You should do more luther perkins instrumentals

Great! Andy cardno of union avenue here x
Big River is my go to song when I just cant seem to get any pep to my step in the mornings. It works way better than coffee.
Johnny Counterfeit could sing and sound exactly like Johnny Cash. Unfortunately he has passed away.
Sometimes I watch/listen to videos, and once it's over, I think, "Now that was a waste of 3 minutes of life that I'll never get back"..
This was _not_ one of those times!
Very enjoyable. Good job!

Love that Gear. Looks like Old Ludwig Drums. Used to Play Drums in a Bar Band Mid Seventies. Great Stuff!!
Luther played the boogie woogie in a special kind of way!
Well played. That was fun to sing along
Awesome, I could listen to it over again and again!
Thank you very much!
Bravo!! Loved it! and Thanks for Lyrics. Grew Up listening to Cash. You like John are Gifted.
I would love to hear them do Folsom prison blues and I walk the line
Me too
Man that is good jamming you're right on tune right in with lyrics hit me up I'm down I sound like Bob Dylan Johnny Cash mixed lol💯😎👊🙏💙
Am I allowed to borrow this for an album I'm working on?
Sure!
Exactamente como debe ser! Felicidades jovenazo, excelente aporte!

Fantastic
Timeless classic,well done.

How that song is not in the top 20 ever, should be.Just sayin'
I agree!
stunning and that's it.
Great Cover love that JM. Fantastic picking style ,,, 👍
Thank you very much!

Great playing, So darn good I had to sub your channel. Thumbs Up on the video.
Excellent!

Absolutely beautiful, you did a damn good job

Enjoyed my visit. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Thanks it a great sound!
Luther used an Esquire on the walk the line album.
yep good stuff I play a bit of Johnny cash with my jazzmaster same colour as well
awesome.
Love it thanks
Great Job, Love that Luther sound! could you tell us a little about your equipment, guitars, Amps, settings? thanks! Love it!
Makes a good backing track.
Perfect

SHE LOVES YOU BIG RIVER MORE THAN ME
Brilliant Which model of Jazzmaster are you using? I'm looking to buy one
Thanks! That’s a Fender American Vintage 65 Jazzmaster.
Nice job. The closest I've heard anyone get on RUclips.
Thank you very much!
Great tone man, can I ask what the settings are on the super reverb and jazz master?. The sound has subtle differences to an Esquires attack click if that makes sense!
Everything turned to eleven.
What guage flatwounds are you using ?
In this video I’m using .11 roundwounds. When using flatwounds I go for .10 or .12.
Let A. R Cash sing for you guys while you play
Big River
So geil ❣️❣️❣️
Also awesome! What is the mic you are using?
Thank you very much! I am using a Shure SM57 which i know Luther used for live recordings, but i also blend the Shure with a large diaphragm condenser mic, that picks up every single detail of my amplifier perfectly, i guess you can use any kind of large diaphragm condenser.
GRG | Get Rhythm
In those days it was the mike for everything...Everyone had one.
Richard Jandrow
Indeed it was, and still it has a place in every studio today. One of the best instrument mics around!
How'd you get that reverb in the background? Also, what kind of guitar? (Big fan by the way!
Blu_Is_A _Name Thank you very much for the comment! I use the reverb on the Super Reverb amp - Luther Perkins also used a Super Reverb. The guitar I'm using is a Fender American Vintage '65 Jazzmaster.
Are you tuned up half a step like they did ?
Yes.
What are your settings on the Super Reverb? Just got one and want to try this sound for myself - nice 65RI Jazzmaster!
Thank you very much!
My settings are:
Vibrato Channel 1: Bright switch up
Volume - 4 Treble - 8 Middle - 7 Bass - 4-5 Reverb - 3-4 Speed - 0 Intensity - 0
Jazzmaster volume is about 6.
how do you pick? do you hit the double hit on the D string or hit G string 2nd fret then D
On this particular song, i'm picking on both at the same time, some times single hits, some time double hits and even triple hits at times, but double hits the most. I've been listening to many Big River versions, and Luther plays differently on every single on of them.

Now they just need to find someone who sounds like Johnny Cash to sing.
Hire Jackson Cash.... He's quite a good impersonator
can you make a video on just picking?
Of the same song?
Btw: I saw you were wondering about my recording set up! Sorry for not answering, but here it is: I have a soundcard called Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 which is an amazing microphone pre-amp platform. Ok cool
And just picking in general. Like show us how u do it
I think I can do that:) Just a video where I play the Luther part and nothing else?
I think Luther would've had an Esquire in the I Walk the Line album.
Yeah, I found that out myself somtime after posting this video.
@@Getrhythmgausdal nice.
Just need someone to sound like Johnny Cash to make this complete
Hi what mics are you using at 0:37?
Thanks!
Hey!

Is this the flatwounds
No flats here.
What bpm is this
I know I'm young but I got a correction. I heard this from the original

Thanks for the comment. I agree with you, but I didn't realize that when I reacorded this.
Yea, its still an amazing video. the '55 sun record single version is the best in my opinion.
Thanks! Yes, I like that one best too.
I learned the alt version's solo

Этот трек я всегда использую для оценки своей звуковой системы. Да, Лютер Перкинс знал толк в звуке! Такой талант и должен был быть рядом с Джонни.
YOU NEED TO SING IT AS WELL 🥴🥴🥴🥴👎👎👎👎
This is a demonstration of Luther Perkins’ guitar style so people can hear what he plays clearly without Johnny Cash’s voice over it…
