    Some of you were pretty brutal with your comments. I just paid over $200 for a system that works on the same principle and I'll bet with a little tweaking his will work as good as mine. The angle is very important when sharpening and I agree it would be better to set the angle with the blade in place but it isn't rocket science. As long as the angle is consistent the length of the blade and the same on each side you're going to end up with a sharp knife. I say "well done"!

    Pro tip: thread a nut onto the bolt before cutting it. Then when you remove the nut after, it fixes up all the mashed threads.

    • @2atlow850
      @2atlow850 4 months ago +5

      If you will take the threaded rod and mark it, where you want to cut it and then instead of putting the rod in the vise I put a bolt in the handle of my grinder. I clamp my grinder up in the device. That way I can spin the rod while I’m cutting it with my hands, rotate the rod as you cut the rod and you will never have to worry about putting a nut on first I know I’ve done this thousands of times when I was fabricating these things having to cut the same 3/8 rod all thread in a 4 inch lengths a friend of mine showed me that trick and it’s been a great ever since you can even as you’re cutting it cock it sideways or just a hair and then the opposite direction just a hair and you will have a somewhat of a radius on the end of the rod where you cut it

    Note: if the rod isn't exactly parallel to the two sanding faces, the two faces will grind at different angles. Using a drill press or horizontal boring machine will give you a better chance. Also, measure the angle with the knife in place; in the video you only measured to the edge of the board, but the knife stuck out another inch so your angle is actually less than 20°.
    The built-in strop is a nice touch.

    To get your knife sharper, you can use higher grit sandpaper.
    But I prefer using whetstones. An inexpensive 1000/6000 stone will do a really good job.
    If you don't mind spending money, the more expensive stones can sharpen your knives to 20,000 grit.

    While this will make the knife "sharp", the edge won't last as long as a properly sharpened knife using a 2 step wet stone. This method removes too much metal. Viewed under magnification, the edge has "teeth", which wear down faster than a properly honed edge. But " A" for effort!

      @onesikm3I made one in about an hour. I had everything I needed in all the junk I've saved over the years. I moved the knife hold down holes very close to the edge so I could sharpen smaller knives. Instead of wood screws I used machine screws and countersunk nuts for them from underneath. I laid a thin metal plate all the way across instead of the washers. I used double sided tape on the block but rethinking that now cuz the emory cloth is shot after 5 very dull kitchen knives. Prolly find a way to clamp the emory cloth so it's easier to change. Been looking for cheap a sharpening solution for a while now. I'm ok at free hand sharpening but this is way better to keep the same angle every time.

      5 kitchen knives and it's done. Better to clamp the emory cloth in the block. Double sided tape works but needs replaced every time you wear out the paper. I did 10 knives. I didn't like the washers so I used a metal plate to clamp down the knives. Machine screws with nuts instead of wood screws.

      Hmmm, that’s why he „probably“ uses double sided tape to be able to easily change the sanding paper… it’s not perfect,but c‘mon, it’s a nice peace of tool and I like the way it’s build. But some people can only criticise 😅

    • @GrumpyVeteran374
      @GrumpyVeteran374 4 months ago +2

      @FranzvonderAlm-u5i oh no, no criticism here. Great idea and inspiration for me. But... if you can take it to another level, why not. Double sided tape gets expensive. The glue on my tape kinda soaked into the emory cloth so it does need to be replaced every time. Just sharing here in case anyone else wanted to try it.

    The method is perfect, no doubt about, but your awareness of basic safety has a lot of headroom for improvement. Drilling a hole, especially one with 10 or more mm diameter with holding the tool in one hand the component in the other is really dangerous. Once you tilt one part, the component will fly around, hidding you anywere. So using a vise is a basic decision.

    It's not a good system.
    Each knife has a different angle settings. You have to painstakingly set the correct angle every time you sharpen.
    Something like the Horl system is better.

    Я люблю острые ножи и они у меня всегда острые, но всю жизнь точил на брусках, мне и в голову не приходило так заморачиваться, угол заточки мерить, как-то интуитивно всё понятно, в зависимости от ножа. Как по мне, то 20 градусов это много для такого ножа, это скорее для мачете или сабли, какой- нибудь, для кухонного шеф ножа градусов 15 надо, можно и меньше.

    It'll work, but depending on how thick the double sided tape is, that will tell you if your getting a slight convex edge and not a flat edge, either way it will work.

    Zkus ten nůž brousit krouživými pohyby celou plochou smirkového plátna. Mělo by to jít rychleji. Já nože ještě přeleštím zelenou brusnou pastou na filcovém nebo koženém kotouči. Takto vybroušený nůž pak projede oloupanou cibulí vlastní vahou.

    Admiro tus ganas de crear cosas. La verdad, entre el tiempo que lleva hacer la herramienta y el montaje del cuchillo no es práctica para nada. Sigo prefiriendo mi vieja piedra de agua, no lo afilaré en un minuto pero si en cinco. También se puede comprar una piedra esméril para afilado en cualquier ferretería por muy poco dinero y se afila manualmente en 5 minutos máximo.

Of course I've got many years of experience going for me. But yes you're invention works well for those who've never sharpened anything before. Well done, 👍👍

      Can you tell me how you sharpen your knives ?
      I’m very interested. Send me a message if you don’t want to post it here, I’d completely understand because of all the negative comments people give too often and too easy.
      Thanks in advance and lots of greetings from Belgium !

    That is an awesome idea that I would like to try to make. But how do you tell what angle to sharpen it at? Different knives have different angles on the blade edge.

    • @frederickepperly9854
      @frederickepperly9854 12 days ago

      Unless you feel the need to change it, simply follow the factory bevel. Make a burr. Do the same on the other side. Strop. It's more about consistency than angle, but if you don't match the factory angle you'll be doing a re bevel first and that's going to take awhile. Use a sharpie. Or, if you want to change it, angle between 17° and 20°
