Some of you were pretty brutal with your comments. I just paid over $200 for a system that works on the same principle and I'll bet with a little tweaking his will work as good as mine. The angle is very important when sharpening and I agree it would be better to set the angle with the blade in place but it isn't rocket science. As long as the angle is consistent the length of the blade and the same on each side you're going to end up with a sharp knife. I say "well done"!
@maxpal78abit like saying "first build this basic rocket and you too can into cosmos in a miinute" First invent combustion engine and the wheel and you can speed down the road doing 80mph. First build a computer out of absolute scrap with a hammer and you can make a data center in under a minute.
If you will take the threaded rod and mark it, where you want to cut it and then instead of putting the rod in the vise I put a bolt in the handle of my grinder. I clamp my grinder up in the device. That way I can spin the rod while I’m cutting it with my hands, rotate the rod as you cut the rod and you will never have to worry about putting a nut on first I know I’ve done this thousands of times when I was fabricating these things having to cut the same 3/8 rod all thread in a 4 inch lengths a friend of mine showed me that trick and it’s been a great ever since you can even as you’re cutting it cock it sideways or just a hair and then the opposite direction just a hair and you will have a somewhat of a radius on the end of the rod where you cut it
Note: if the rod isn't exactly parallel to the two sanding faces, the two faces will grind at different angles. Using a drill press or horizontal boring machine will give you a better chance. Also, measure the angle with the knife in place; in the video you only measured to the edge of the board, but the knife stuck out another inch so your angle is actually less than 20°. The built-in strop is a nice touch.
@brentfrank7012 I don't know where you are from, but there are plenty good english dictionaries on the Internet. The words sharpened and spoiled are not synonyms. Just so you know. Hahahaha.
To get your knife sharper, you can use higher grit sandpaper. But I prefer using whetstones. An inexpensive 1000/6000 stone will do a really good job. If you don't mind spending money, the more expensive stones can sharpen your knives to 20,000 grit.
Nice click bait and fake comments. BTW thats a hell of a long "1 minute" You do realize it would be a lot easier to just spend the money and buy the product that is made to do this
After one minut I just stopped and doubled the speed in the settings, saved me some time. Also that ' sticky jeans' part is unnecessary , just wipe the dirt of on any rag .
While this will make the knife "sharp", the edge won't last as long as a properly sharpened knife using a 2 step wet stone. This method removes too much metal. Viewed under magnification, the edge has "teeth", which wear down faster than a properly honed edge. But " A" for effort!
I wanted to sharpen my knife for meal preparation, not an all day project. I decided to use my knife sharpener and had the task accomplished in three minutes.
Right, but what if you didn't have a knife sharpener? This person is merely showing how to construct one. After it's completed then it too will sharpen a blade in three minutes. There really isn't any good reason to be a rectum.
You may also be genius, very very super smart to see this as genius. I want to understand better what makes a genius. As a person who is not so mentally gifted…. Please explain the genius factor here; how you see this is not smart, you see it is not extremely smart. You see it is genius. Others may not but I want to know. What makes genius-level work, can you tell us?
man created a fixed angle system where you have to manually set the angle every time instead of a simple diamond whetstone where you can build the muscle memory for the angle and not have to tinker with it
Homemade Lansky clone? If your serious about keeping your blade sharp, invest in the real thing! I've been using the same 3 stone kit for over 40 years, and nothing comes even close to the precision and sharpness you can achieve.
If sand papers really work well in knife sharpening, the professionals need not expensive whetstones. The video demonstrates a bad example. Sharpness would not last long and the knife is damaged.
@onesikm3I made one in about an hour. I had everything I needed in all the junk I've saved over the years. I moved the knife hold down holes very close to the edge so I could sharpen smaller knives. Instead of wood screws I used machine screws and countersunk nuts for them from underneath. I laid a thin metal plate all the way across instead of the washers. I used double sided tape on the block but rethinking that now cuz the emory cloth is shot after 5 very dull kitchen knives. Prolly find a way to clamp the emory cloth so it's easier to change. Been looking for cheap a sharpening solution for a while now. I'm ok at free hand sharpening but this is way better to keep the same angle every time.
Sure that works.. but it’s time consuming, not that kind to your knife, you’re going to through sand paper, just seems like a little of work dor the cost and results. Save up and buy a Lansky or WE40. Faster, easier, last forever, kinder to your knife. Better results.
But why go through all that trouble wnen you can buy whet stones. 400, 1000, 3000 grit. Spent 20 minutes and then use leather to remove all the micro imperfections. Why spend 5 minutes when you can do it in 20.😅
This is brilliant and well thought out. I love seeing people using the brains that GOD gave you for creating and coming up with solutions to everyday problems. ❤❤❤❤❤
The sharpening angle should be 10 degrees, not 20! It is sharpened first by 1000 grit sandpaper and then by 400. Otherwise, everything is fine! Greetings from the North Caucasus! ;)
If you can build this contraption you can easily hold the knife at 21 degrees and sharpen it ! How long do you think that thin paper is going to last ?
5 kitchen knives and it's done. Better to clamp the emory cloth in the block. Double sided tape works but needs replaced every time you wear out the paper. I did 10 knives. I didn't like the washers so I used a metal plate to clamp down the knives. Machine screws with nuts instead of wood screws.
Hmmm, that’s why he „probably“ uses double sided tape to be able to easily change the sanding paper… it’s not perfect, but c‘mon, it’s a nice peace of tool and I like the way it’s build. But some people can only criticise 😅
@FranzvonderAlm-u5i oh no, no criticism here. Great idea and inspiration for me. But... if you can take it to another level, why not. Double sided tape gets expensive. The glue on my tape kinda soaked into the emory cloth so it does need to be replaced every time. Just sharing here in case anyone else wanted to try it.
You know the guys trying to do some nice things here give a little bit more kindness, man that's why everything is so screwed up on this Internet. In the meantime is a perfect gift for the person can't hold it at 21° and the add-ons are great idea for them
The method is perfect, no doubt about, but your awareness of basic safety has a lot of headroom for improvement. Drilling a hole, especially one with 10 or more mm diameter with holding the tool in one hand the component in the other is really dangerous. Once you tilt one part, the component will fly around, hidding you anywere. So using a vise is a basic decision.
Just imagine if your parents weren't tightwads.... they'd have bought condoms and you wouldn't be here. So you'd think you'd be more grateful when it comes to being thrifty and trying to improvise....
It's not a good system. Each knife has a different angle settings. You have to painstakingly set the correct angle every time you sharpen. Something like the Horl system is better.
Amen to the previous commenter. Not only that but the price of the materials probably far outweigh the cost of the new knife and the fuel to drive to the WalMart
It'll work, but depending on how thick the double sided tape is, that will tell you if your getting a slight convex edge and not a flat edge, either way it will work.
Zkus ten nůž brousit krouživými pohyby celou plochou smirkového plátna. Mělo by to jít rychleji.
I've been sharpening knives for about 65 years; and although your invention works well, but I have methods where I can do it quicker and cheaper. Of course I've got many years of experience going for me. But yes you're invention works well for those who've never sharpened anything before. Well done, 👍👍
Hello George, Don’t mind the negative comments… Can you tell me how you sharpen your knives ? I’m very interested. Send me a message if you don’t want to post it here, I’d completely understand because of all the negative comments people give too often and too easy. Thanks in advance and lots of greetings from Belgium !
Thank you for your video. @ 6:27, that piece is known as an "electrode welding rod" which can be purchased at a hardware store. A similar size steel rod may also be used as a substitute.
That is an awesome idea that I would like to try to make. But how do you tell what angle to sharpen it at? Different knives have different angles on the blade edge.
Unless you feel the need to change it, simply follow the factory bevel. Make a burr. Do the same on the other side. Strop. It's more about consistency than angle, but if you don't match the factory angle you'll be doing a re bevel first and that's going to take awhile. Use a sharpie. Or, if you want to change it, angle between 17° and 20°
Some of you were pretty brutal with your comments. I just paid over $200 for a system that works on the same principle and I'll bet with a little tweaking his will work as good as mine. The angle is very important when sharpening and I agree it would be better to set the angle with the blade in place but it isn't rocket science. You don't have anything better to do. That's pretty easy to tell. Want a napkin to dry your eyes?
@bhedgepig9653 A double-edged sword! ))
Pro tip: thread a nut onto the bolt before cutting it. Then when you remove the nut after, it fixes up all the mashed threads.
If you will take the threaded rod and mark it, where you want to cut it and then instead of putting the rod in the vise I put a bolt in the handle of my grinder. I clamp my grinder up in the device. That way I can spin the rod while I’m cutting it with my hands, rotate the rod as you cut the rod and you will never have to worry about putting a nut on first I know I’ve done this thousands of times when I was fabricating these things having to cut the same 3/8 rod all thread in a 4 inch lengths a friend of mine showed me that trick and it’s been a great ever since you can even as you’re cutting it cock it sideways or just a hair and then the opposite direction just a hair and you will have a somewhat of a radius on the end of the rod where you cut it
Or you could just finish grinding the bolt like a pool cue
Exactly...
Was really looking forward to the palm test at the end
If we use your hand, we can get rid of your ability to comment. Be economical, and give us two for the price of one.
11:35 I will try it right away with my dull knife great video
Watch at 4x. You’re welcome😎
Thank you. I took your advice and glad I did!😅

Good Lord ! I hand sharpened 4 knives while watching this.

It's great that you share this useful idea.
While I was watching this video, I grew old and died.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤭🤭🤭
Tears laughing 👍

That's only because your not allowed to play with power tools though, huh??😂😂
same, how dumb , waste my time.. down voted
Very smart person. Way cheaper than buying the same thing from the fancy producers of sharpening products. ❤

Thank you for all that you do Sir, you are appreciated. 🙏🙏🙏
I believe it is papaya. A tropical fruit.
Delicious and healthy fruit that grows directly off the stem
mamao fruta tipica do Brasil
@pauloricardoalves2409 A typical fruit in our back yard in Florida. Its also great eaten green in soup in place of potatoes or shredded and pickled.

Buy a Lansky,I was a dealer for 10 yrs,the best!
Lansky sucks. Cheap azz stones. By making one, a diamond sharpener can be fitted. And no more need for full of crap dealers
That's a lot of work for the same results you get with a knife wand on 30 seconds.
Never run a knife blade across your palm of hand to test for sharpness. Always use your wrist. You also might keep a tourniquet handy.
😂😂😂
This video is just a homemade version of something that is commercially available. I'd like to know what else is worth it.
Don't throw away the seeds, let them dry and use them as pepper.Or take a teaspoon of fresh seeds every day and chew on them.Very healthy for you
Brilliant! I shall try it!
I can never free hand a consistent angle on a stone.
Letting the machine do it is genius.
I still think it's easier to spend 50 bucks on a machine and diamond stones and sharpen properly) my time on making this machine is worth more)))
good..🥥👍
To make it razor sharp you should have made a second set of 3,000/6,000 grain sandpaper and set up a leather strop on the base.
I like this video. Nice work
man created a fixed angle system where you have to manually set the angle every time instead of a simple diamond whetstone where you can build the muscle memory for the angle and not have to tinker with it

Wow! I never thought something as simple as this could make such a great tool. Thanks for sharing
Bure B$, it could broke edge of knife
@ลุงปิแอร์ only if you are an idiot. This is the same basic design as some commercially available knife sharpening sets.
If sand papers really work well in knife sharpening, the professionals need not expensive whetstones. The video demonstrates a bad example. Sharpness would not last long and the knife is damaged.
To be honest, it is cleverBUT it's yet another gadget
I learned to sharpen freehand years ago, and with practice, you get a razor edge every time.
I don't think it's that simple to sharpen by hand, as it doesn't maintain the symmetry of the angles on both sides.
Agreed! Practice makes perfect!
@guglielmi600 how perfect does an edge need to be? if it works it works
Might as well just buy a Lansky Sharpening kit and dispense with spending all that time and effort making your own blocks. What is your time worth?
I'm inspired. Already have 3 upgrades in mind. Can't wait to try it. Thanks for sharing!
Me too I’m about to cobble one together what alterations did you have in mind ?
@onesikm3I made one in about an hour. I had everything I needed in all the junk I've saved over the years. I moved the knife hold down holes very close to the edge so I could sharpen smaller knives. Instead of wood screws I used machine screws and countersunk nuts for them from underneath. I laid a thin metal plate all the way across instead of the washers. Why is it that when you watch a dyi you have to do what looks like hours of work just for something so simple to accomplish?
Awesome idea, great work 👍 Don't listen to the moronic bots comments!

Congrats...you built a Lansky sharpener...
Congrats indeed. Lansky sucks. Cheap stones. This can be made to use anything, including diamond sharpeners.
The greatest quality of this tool is precision for anybody !
yes, god wants you to use your brain to solve everyday problems but not to question his logic and morality :)
Wait is the minute over I didn’t even realize the minute had passed
This is easiest and quick with less effort with good results.
Well done sir
No way it will broke the finesse of the edge, use the dedicated stone
The sharpening angle should be 10 degrees, not 20! It is sharpened first by 1000 grit sandpaper and then by 400. Otherwise, everything is fine!
Greetings from the North Caucasus! ;)
Old concept at pennies per cost. Bravo! Excellent job!
The knife is completely scratched. What amateurs and incompetents!🤦
In the meantime is a perfect gift for the person can't hold it at 21° and the add-ons are great idea for them
@GrumpyVeteran374 thx for clarifying 👍🏻
The method is perfect, no doubt about, but your awareness of basic safety has a lot of headroom for improvement. Once you tilt one part, the component will fly around, hidding you anywere. So using a vise is a basic decision.
Is there any one of these that's a simple solution, and doesn't involve power tools, and a trip to the hardware store???
Yes , buy a wet stone and learn to do it properly !
U need to grind down the heel, by the hilt..if not, it wont cut through finer foods, like veggie skins etc
Total waste. Get some sharpening stones....medium and fine. 🎉
Could say the same thing about one of your parents not swallowing, technically. We won't though, cause that would be rude. Sorta like your attitude.
This is for me bc i never keep the right angles when free hand sharpening. 👍
I have something like this I bought years. Has several different stones, all the way up to 3000.
Oh dear, what a shame. Get a life and go buy a proper sharpener. He does not mention you will need to replace the abrasive after almost every use.
Yeah, this isn’t serious, just to get clicks and ad income.
Just imagine if your parents weren't tightwads.... they'd have bought condoms and you wouldn't be here. So you'd think you'd be more grateful when it comes to being thrifty and trying to improvise....
Razor sharp in a minute???………it takes half a lifetime to make that contraption!!😂
We never sharpen both sides of a knife, because it is fragile and sharp, but remove the micro-burrs on the side of the unsharpened side! 😮
Mr Emerson?
"We"? You and that mouse in your pocket?
Wow a cheap and effective Lansky knock off. I know how sharp they get an edge, this would be no different. Cool Idea!
It's not a good system.
Each knife has a different angle settings. You have to painstakingly set the correct angle every time you sharpen.
Something like the Horl system is better.
or you could just go to an outdoor store and get a real good knife sharpener. saves hrs of work building one
You could, if you were an inept clutz that had more money than brains. But could you customize it? Oh that's right - you should just go buy one.
Brilliant mate pure brilliant

Please either drag the sandpaper or push it. Ignore me if you know it doesn't matter.
What apps did you use for elevation measurwments?
i think app angle metter
Amen to the previous commenter. Not only that but the price of the materials probably far outweigh the cost of the new knife and the fuel to drive to the WalMart
Using crane to lift little stick
What about tweezers when you pee? No problems with overkill then
I couldn’t built it because I didn’t have a sharp drill bit, sharp pencil, or sharp scissors.
That was the world's longest minute!
Only took me 30 seconds to watch
Longer than the minute that made you?
A minute in what planet??
It'll work, but depending on how thick the double sided tape is, that will tell you if your getting a slight convex edge and not a flat edge, either way it will work.
Zkus ten nůž brousit krouživými pohyby celou plochou smirkového plátna. Mělo by to jít rychleji.
Great ado for nothing
too bad the foam backed double sided tape will compress on each stroke changing the angle and rounding off the blade edge... fail

I've been sharpening knives for about 65 years; and although your invention works well, but I have methods where I can do it quicker and cheaper. Of course I've got many years of experience going for me. But yes you're invention works well for those who've never sharpened anything before. Well done, 👍👍
What is your expert method?
Yeah, but your video sucks.😂
WHAT TYPE OF STONE DO YOU RECOMMEND
Where's your video?
Hello George,
Don’t mind the negative comments…
Can you tell me how you sharpen your knives ?
I’m very interested. Send me a message if you don’t want to post it here, I’d completely understand because of all the negative comments people give too often and too easy.
Thanks in advance and lots of greetings from Belgium !
There’s a company that makes these kits. They can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. Unless you want play arts and crafts all day.
Thank you for your video. @ 6:27, that piece is known as an "electrode welding rod" which can be purchased at a hardware store. A similar size steel rod may also be used as a substitute.
😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅😅 after few days of preperations he managed to cut the pumki. Way to go .. n !!!
Not as hard as you keeping silent, apparently
@frederickepperly9854que poco democratico che ,
You can buy a knife sharpener at most department stores in less than 5 minutes.
Or, if you want to change it, angle between 17° and 20°
I use tradition sharpening methods and my knives are razor sharp. Would Antony really go through this stuff?
