00:05 Do you know any more on Melton at this point? 00:07 STEVE KERR: No. Don't know anything. 00:08 Are you going into this thinking, I mean, even if you don't have - you clearly at this point don't have a firm timetable on him, but you're expecting at least like a chunk of games? 00:16 Yeah, for sure. Yeah, he needs more evaluation over the next few days. 00:21 Steve, DaMichael (Cole) from the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Just curious, have you noticed anything in particular with this Grizzlies team that has allowed them to be a little bit more successful, I guess, this season with the injuries than last year? 00:36 Well, they're playing so hard. And I've always admired the Grizzlies organization for the way they've developed players, the way they've drafted, how hard they play. They beat us last year in Memphis without anybody. And so Taylor (Jenkins) does a great job and every game, they're coming after you. So that's been built into the culture there. And I just think they've got good players. They've got better players this year than they did. last year. So, despite the injuries to their key guys, they're still Top 10 in both offense and defense. They're playing fast. I think they're No. 1 in the league in pace. They crash the offensive glass. They put a lot of pressure on you. And so we can't let our guard down tonight, just because Ja's out. And we know the drill against these guys. We have great respect for them. 01:33 What's it like coaching against Scotty Pippen, Jr., given your history with his dad? 01:37 Yeah, I don't know. I guess I'll find out tonight, but it's strange now, but he's not the first son of a former teammate or opponent that I've coached against. This is just a sign of how old I am now, more than anything. 01:58 Steve, is it safe to assume that Kyle's okay tonight? 02:03 Kyle? Yeah. Yeah. He should be good to go. 02:06 Okay. And is it safe to assume that you're ready to give us your lineup? 02:08 No, it's never safe to assume that. 02:12 Good try, Monte (Poole). That was good. There was a report today about possible tweaks to the All-Star Game when it comes here in February. I don't know if you saw that, possibly-- 02:23 Blissfully not on Twitter. 02:25 That was sort of my point, was how much attention have you paid to that in the past? How much does it need something, do you think? I mean, obviously it's relevant because it's here this year. But the idea of the story by Shams (Charania) was about the league discussing the possibility of dividing the All-Stars into three teams and then taking the winner of the Rising Stars Game and making it a four-team tournament, basically. Any thoughts? 02:52 No. Is that fair? Do I - am I required to answer that question? 02:59 (Raymond Ridder:) Since it's here, you think it's a great idea. 03:01 It's a great - it's a great idea. It's a great idea. Our fans are gonna love it. 03:06 Ridder said, "Concur." 03:09 Steve, that first home stand you were speaking about your guys' emphasis of taking care of the ball. And also it seems like that's been - the turnovers have been down and also still sharing the ball the way and moving it the way you want to. Have you been pleased with that progress? 03:25 Yeah. We're more organized this year and I give our younger coaches a lot of credit. We've learned a lot from, Seth Cooper, Lainn Wilson, Will Sheehey, these guys have done a great job in the gym with our young players the last couple of years, a great job with our Santa Cruz team, in Seth's case. And I'll be really honest, I spent a lot of time with them this summer and asked their advice. How can we get more organized? How can we maintain our ball movement? Because I watched them on the floor and and they've really brought great ideas to us this year. And I spent time with all of them over the summer, plotting our summer, how we could accomplish our goals. And so I really give those guys a lot of credit and then I give our players a lot of credit for being very coachable and being adaptable to some new things, new ideas and guys like Draymond and Steph. We've played a certain way for a long time and they've won championships, so for them to be amenable to some change has been a key to all of this. So I think we can get a lot better with our execution, but I'm pleased with the early season results because turnovers are down, transition is up from an efficiency standpoint and, all in all, we're playing pretty well. So I think the changes have been very positive. 04:58 Have they just been minor tweaks, Steve? 05:01 It's mainly getting organized. I think the - in the past, we've been a team that played out of chaos a lot. We've always loved to move the ball. We're always going to be a ball movement team. I just think we're getting to space better and then operating from those positions better. So even though you still see the ball movement and the pace, I think you see fewer difficult passes. You guys wrote about the play in Boston where Steph threw it deep and I called a time out and yelled at him 'cause it was a turnover. And so I've really tried to hold Steph and Draymond accountable for those types of decisions, where in the past I maybe didn't mind them as much, 'cause if we can generate pace and live with a few turnovers, it was really positive. But it's no longer the case. Everybody else is playing fast, too. And so we're just more organized and in better spots to avoid risky plays. 06:02 Steve, Draymond said the other day in a podcast that LeBron - when he was contemplating his future of whether to stay or go to Memphis - LeBron helped convince him to stay because of what he built here and what that meant. Did you ever think or wonder what it would have been like to not have Draymond and especially him going to a team like Memphis, the way they're built, especially the way Draymond's playing right now defensively? 06:24 Well, I talked to Draymond when he was going through that process of free agency. And so I did think a little bit about it. But ultimately I wanted him back, for obvious reasons. I mean, he's still one of the great defenders in the league, one of the all-time great defenders and impacts winning the way he does. So that would have had to have been a sign-and-trade. And frankly, we weren't interested. I know I wasn't. And so I never - even though they were interested, it was - it would have had to be a collaboration. He wasn't an unrestricted free agent. so, It, worked out as it was supposed to work out. He's meant to be a Warrior for life. 07:14 Podziemski's been kind of quiet, really, most of this early season. How would you just kind of diagnosis play right now? 07:21 I think the last two games there's been some indecision, first time I've seen that from him since maybe early last season. It happens to everybody during the course of the year. You just get into a little bit of a rut. I know what Brandin is about and I expect him to come out with a lot of fire tonight, a lot of energy. I want him firing away when he's open. He's at his best when he's super-aggressive. And I think he'll come out aggressively tonight. 07:51 You guys are never gonna get to the free throw line a ton, be at the top of the league as far as that goes, but your percentage is pretty low this year, obviously. How do you as a team-- 08:00 If you consider dead last "low". But that's still a judgment call. 08:06 Yeah, just as a team, how do improvements come with that? Obviously Steph is Steph, but how do you max - How important is maximizing those few opportunities, if you guys do get to the line a lot? 08:16 It's huge. It's huge. I mean, the other night it almost cost us the game. And it's a great question. How do you coach that? So we've, over the years, always encouraged guys to shoot 50 every day. I used to shoot 100 a day with a toss-back. It was very meditative. I've encouraged our guys to do that. We have way more coaches now than we did back in the day. So the toss-back came in handy. But free throw shooting is mostly a mental thing. And so we have built-in resources to try to help guys with that. And there's no question we've got some guys struggling. We've gotta find our way and I've gotta consider a few different things. 09:06 I know you want to play fast. Are you playing fast enough for your taste, or do you, would you want to take it up a little bit more? 09:11 I'd like to take it up a little bit more. I think when we get in trouble, we're not getting the ball up the floor quickly enough or getting it out of the net quickly enough. So the higher the pace, the better for us for sure. But it requires all five guys to be participating and locked in.
11:21 Moses, how are you doing? How was practice today? How do you feel like this team - how would you describe this team's start to the year, 10-2 record? 11:32 MOSES MOODY: It's been good, the energy that we felt in training camp, going into it in Hawaii, the camaraderie we built there. And then just a lot of the things we talked about. We've been executing really well and we've had the outcome that we were expecting - we would have expected. 11:46 A lot of guys are saying that this year, the chemistry is so much better than it was last year. And I guess you kind of just mentioned that, but how much does that make a difference in terms of just day-to-day stuff and just coming into the building? 12:02 Honestly, we had really good chemistry last year, so I don't want to discount that. Because the energy CP (Chris Paul) brought into the team, especially in the locker room, off the court, it was a really good group of guys that got along really well last year, as well. This year, I think on the court, things are moving fast, moving fast, the ball is moving fast, we're running, playing hard, playing fast, so the chemistry shows a lot on the court, as well. Yeah. 12:26 So when you look, I mean, you watch you guys play and you want to move fast, I know they want to, you want to have pace and everything, but it looks like the ball is moving even more than it did last year. 12:35 Yeah, yeah, that's something the coaches have been preaching. And then we are able to see the outcome and see how that benefits the team and how that - it's one thing if your coaches are telling you to do something and it's like - but if you can actually see the benefit that comes from what your coaches are telling you to do and it inspires you a little differently. 12:58 Jonathan was saying that when Stack talks to you guys, he said, "He not only teaches, he shows us," and so how much does that make a difference? 13:05 Yeah, that's cool. 'Cause principles that he talked about, he will get in the stance. He'll show you exactly what he mean, how to do it. He'll even hop into ones sometimes and be talking out what he'd be preaching. But as well as that, he has these sayings or things to remember when he's saying it. Like a thing on defense, he say, "Lay in the weeds." But he's talking about like a lion or whatever, like in the weeds reacting to go either way. But he's talking about on defense, but it's like - that puts the image in your imagery, put the image in your head so you can think of it like that, when in those crucial moments. If you say get - like, "foot behind," I'm remembering that in the game, I'm not remembering, "Oh, get behind the guy so I can chase over," and then - no, it's "foot behind" and then "war over," like I'm going to war, we finna battle over the top, but just having that imagery makes you remember it in crucial times. 13:53 You guys lost a lot of close games last year, but this year, I mean, Steve said maybe it's one of the reasons why you guys had some success, more success, is that mostly it's the defense. He said, "We play better defense and down the stretch now and getting more stops." How important has that been? 14:08 Yeah. Yeah. I think it's been really big for us. 'Cause like you said, that's not - nobody talks about that. Like we - like the last season didn't turn out how we wanted it to, but we lost a lot of close games. We lost so many close games. We could have probably been out of the Play-in Tournament if we won half the ones we would - were guaranteed supposed to win, but we - but I think that's a skill, winning close games and figuring out whatever it takes, no matter how ugly it is. Just coming out with the win is a skill and a talent. And I think we've done a good job of that this year. 14:38 Speaking of ugly games, the other night, did you even watch the film of that game? 14:44 Yeah, we just got done. We watched it. And then I watched it afterhand. The In-Season Tournament is always kind of funny when you're dealing with the point spread and everything. You want to get as many points as possible, but you want to - but you also, yeah, and then the other team is still fighting when they would usually be not fighting. And it's just something to get used to. Just watching the game, it looked like, I mean, it looked almost at times like football out there. It was like a lot of physicality. Yeah. And when I say point spread, I want to make sure y'all know I'm talking about the In-Season Tournament, the point differential rule. 15:15 What does "foot behind" mean with Stack? 15:19 It's just not getting back cut, forcing the defender one way. 15:27 And what are some of his other terms? You mentioned the "laying in the weeds" and "war over." 15:32 Yeah, I can't let everything out. I don't know who listening. I can't let everybody in the playbook because you can say it on the sideline. They don't know what he talking about. 15:43 Moses, what's jumped out to you about playing with Kyle so far about what he brings his skill set? 15:48 Yeah, Kyle is really smart. And the way that he play the game, he's thoughtful. He's very - he moves with intent. Everybody talked about the slow motion thing and all of that. But it's for a reason, like he can move faster than he moves, but he's just so thoughtful and knowing what he's doing, why he's doing it. So that can - he slows the game down, literally. James Banks. 16:09 Yeah, yeah. 16:09 (Raymond Ridder:) I told him those three three-pointers he made in Boston, he started shooting them on Wednesday and he finished on Thursday. 16:17 Ha ha ha ha ha. Cool.
