why does this have 71 dislikes, i dont even surf and have never rode a wave, surfed a wave etc, but watchin surfing vids is so cool. just the size of the waves is amazing let alone being able to ride one!!
Hey bro, look at that wahini ride that wave. There's sum super ultimate gnarly, radical surf that needs to be shredded braw! I remember one time, I slept in my Suby and was the first one to pull into Breck next morning. I seriously could NOT wait to shred mad powder! I jibbed till I was gassed that day braw! !
There is also "private Mavericks" which is a good place for beginners. During sub-tide, the exposed beach reef is covered with sea anemones, you walk on them and they can take it somehow. If you try to get one loose it is pretty hard to do. The sub-tide is also when people pick up clams and other weird edibles.
Sounds scary - just the way I like it... meaning, I'd have adrenaline rush to get out there, get in lineup somewhere and then I'd be like "And now what???"... I'd probably sit on the board watchin' other people catchin waves and then thinking - I can do it - go for one and than break into 1000 pieces :) Respect man!
There is a reef about 700meters out to about, it is at a 40-degree angle to the beach, so it guides the water one direction, over a shallow reef, just like the one that proceeds from the beach to about 500m out.
Don't see any long rides on this epic day though. But yeah you're right, Mavericks is like a small Waimea, or even a small Ghost Trees. But it's mostly like a right hand Margaret River, without the Box up the beach for the tube freaks.
I live like 15 minutes away from this place and I never knew it was so close by. It's funny cuz Half Moon Bay is such a small quiet community but when the waves hit it ain't quiet no more!
Ya know I have to say that when I think of surfers I imagine a stereotypical lazy, dumb individual doing it but......it takes a hell of a lot of skill and training to do this without dying. I am amazed. This is incredible and beautiful to watch. I could never do it, though I would like to. I am really impressed and in awe of these surfers.
Is it true that these waves were discovered from the smoking area at a high school by the guy I guess who made this whole thing famous? He surfed it by himself for years? I'm not a surfer but I'm just starting to learn the history of this sport and I have to say I'm impressed!
@arpadpihes Also, remember that all waves slow down as they reach the shore, causing their wavelength to decrease, thus making them taller, till they break.
i don't understand, japan was hit by smaller waves but this had much much bigger ones and that place didnt have a tsunami. One of life's greatest mysteries.
ha, ive been fishing of the coast of newfoundland for the past couple years with my dad. ive seen swells out at see that dwarf our 45 foot fishing boat. literally i was scared shitless in my first storm.
Big, big waves and if you get taken over the falls your hitting bottom. It was shallow! So stoked to surf it, and left thankfull i was alive and not too beat up!
@Truth5212 because the seafloor topography leading up to the surf spot is like a gigantic ramp and the currents go right up it and then when the get to the end of this seafloor "ramp", viola, The signature Maverick surf.
At 0:08 seconds, I Fond memories. I used to live at this RV Park, Pillar Point, back in 2001/2002. I had a view of the lighthouse and the mavericks everyday. I miss the sound of the lighthouse beep every few seconds.
Video with HORIZON has nice atmosphere, a nice tune... steady now. This reminds me of a day around 1995-6 I caught atleast 20 quick 3rd reef STEAMERS cloud breaks, just a single big drop peeling off the shoulder right back to pole position. 2 or 3 others but I was the young ace. Finally I decided to try & ride one all the way in, and was in trouble [out of 'current' luck] as the mush drove schlept me into a mob of angry has-beens [run over that lazy carp? hehehe lol]
I surf in Sicily, on the Mediterranean sea, and every time I see video on Mavs I always have nightmares when I go to sleep...brrrr!!! :-/ p.s. Massive Attack rules ;)
The warriors took the wave by the throat and traveled towards the head for the kill. Only one lone knight thrived and fought the wave's attacks and defended himself with pride. As the other fell to their watery dooms. The lone warrior surf, and prevailed.
@angrytitties Ok, didnt know. Here in Holland we only do kitesurfing and windsurfing. We dont have real waves to surf on. Thanks for letting me know :)
Sick. Sick video. There's a moment, right before the drop in, on the crest of the wave when it looks like the guys are just suspended - a moment of weightlessness, then sheer unadulterated power and speed and AWE. Mavericks, with it's grey water and angry looking waves looks worse (or better depending on your perspective) than Pipeline or Tasmania. Scares the bejesus out of me.
AMAZING! 10 for the music !
10 for the footage !
10 for everything !
2 years on, and never saw that clip!! lovely, thank u. xx
10 for the music !

Holy... Two things I'm afraid of- giant waves and tornados. You guys and your balls of steel just cured me of one. :)
Amazing and I love how you put it all together. Good job mate!
far out!!! beautiful video! love the music too.
Nice choice of music, huge massive attack fan.
ive never been surfing before, but when i watch these videos i can only imagine the rush you get from dropping from a huge wave like these..
why does this have 71 dislikes, i dont even surf and have never rode a wave, surfed a wave etc, but watchin surfing vids is so cool. just the size of the waves is amazing let alone being able to ride one!!
Oh my gosh, I don't know how waves can be that big! They are huge! I'm used to little waves in Cornwall
Song is Inertia Creeps by Massive Attack if anyone was wondering.
Can't even fathom what a rush. Killer footage.
I hear ya. I'm all into paddling into the wave and pure surfing but it's fun to watch some of the big wave surfing with tow in.
WOW!!!!!!! ITS A GREAT VIDEO!!! LUV THE WAVES!!♥♥♥
Stunning footage!
I admire those guys for their courage. It must be such an out-of-this-world feeling of rush that makes them do it
Inertia Creeps by Massive Attack. It's from the album Mezzanine.
amazing waves! that's beautiful man!

@MZCHILLWILL09 hahaha Dude that made my day... so uneducated yet so amusing.. Love it
0:56 I love it how the guy, paddling, is like, " Oh really , thats how u do it ? , check this out" and catches the wave with his bair hands!
Always cool - perfect music for this vid.
This gave me a rush just by watching good job on the video and the people surfing these monsters !
best surf video ever
im in love with theses waves

@DrunkenLeprochaunPro me too... I've always wanted to watch the mavericks surf contest. Maybe some day I'll enter it(:
fabuloso el video, me encanta la toma que todas las tablas pasan para el otro lado y solo agarran la ola un surfista, increible

That swoop at 0:47 is a classic piece of style. Even if the end section clipped him .. Nice..
Nice song from Album "Mezzanine" (Massive Attack)... Sounds fresh even after all these years.
Artist: Inertia Creeps
Song: Massive Attack
Sick Vid & Track... Bring It!!

@ShitMyCatsOnFire...first of all I love your name...lmao! And thanx for lettin me know where these waves are...sweet man!
@SnowboardProCamp Road trip to Half Moon Bay!
That is crazy scary! Props to the guys who are good enough to do it, but I have no desire to ever ride a wave that big and intense.
Is it true that these waves were discovered from the smoking area at a high school by the guy I guess who made this whole thing famous? He surfed it by himself for years? I'm not a surfer but I'm just starting to learn the history of this sport and I have to say I'm impressed!

these waves are MASSIVE. the biggest wave i've ever surfed was like 7ft, and i thought i was the coolest person ever!
curl there is insane - beware of the rip and rocks that take out even the best in the world! Awesome!
Big, big waves and if you get taken over the falls your hitting bottom. It was shallow! So stoked to surf it, and left thankfull i was alive and not too beat up!

@vinman9899 3 strikes and you're out. "Mavericks" in the TITLE OF THE VIDEO is in northern California, a little south of San Francisco.
@ortleysurfer
that is a nexrad or similar - weather radar jobby tower
Surfed Waimea on a 12 ft day and thought i was going to die! These guys are nuts!!
I don't even know why I just watched that,I would have peed myself just being there, but amazing footage!
These wash rollers are great to learn on.
Too bad.... I was out there today and it looks like no sets will be strong enough to have the contest this year before the deadline next Tuesday.
@nonnemar i agree, im a small wave surfa myself but thats just the type of surfa i am. but still i respect my fellow surfers

p.s. Massive Attack rules ;)
@calimon00 Massive Attack is awesome dude
No, Mavericks is a beach and we get these 35-50ft waves for a couple months a year and it's got the biggest waves in Norcal for sure.
@GoodHipHopLyrics Congratulations. And good luck with surfing Mavericks bro - I'll send your family a card and flowers!

The warriors took the wave by the throat and traveled towards the head for the kill. Only one lone knight thrived and fought the wave's attacks and defended himself with pride. As the other fell to their watery dooms. The lone warrior surf, and prevailed.

Really clean day.

@angrytitties Ok, didnt know. Here in Holland we only do kitesurfing and windsurfing. We dont have real waves to surf on. Thanks for letting me know :)
@ppcg2510 most big wave surfers use bindings like on snowboards to their feet cause otherwise the board is just dragged away
Bienvenido al mundo extremo de Massive Attack. Ten un buen viaje y procura no volar demasiado.

Breathtaking.
At the 1:00 mark a guy paddles in and drops on the dude who towed in. That's one of the coolest things i ever saw.
