That VPI reminds me of the PS Audio Phono Preamp ][ that I bought new, from Mike Moffit, of Schiit fame, back when he worked at a high fi store in Santa Ana. I used it for many years and finally put it aside and bought the PS Audio integrated amp. I ended up putting it up for sale and someone bought it. What's unusual is he messaged me a few days later saying "What is this thing? It blows my more expensive pre out the window.".

The Art in phono pre-amp design is the RIAA curve. The best phono stages have the best curve measurements.
