    That breaks my heart. Such an iconic spot, somewhere I had wanted to go.

      They haven’t taken away the whole thing yet and don’t know if they will. Only 300 meters of land was demolished, only cutting the access to the now SPIt island. Another 700 meters will be removed this year.
      There’s currently a boat access to kite there, not sure if any non kiters are allowed access for now

    So sad to see this go. Was such a beautiful spot. I loved the town and the area in general. Squamish was really just a better Hood River surrounded by great outdoor sports on the snow land and water. Maybe with winging taking off Squamish will be able to offer great wing launch spots that don't quite require the space that kiting needs.

    It‘s so sad, that all over the world, we have to fight for our few kitespots. I am toughed be your movie and pray for your spot. Beside so many aggressive and antihuman things going on in the world, I do not understand humans fight other humans and destroy what other humans love. This is insane😔. We come to earth as loving creatures and this capitalistic society makes some very powerful people to psychopathic monsters. Love and peace to all of you ✌🏽☺️

    Sounds like the people in charge aren’t clever. This is clearly one of THE touristic magnets of Squamish. I, a tourist, am disappointed by such a lame decision. And, out of curiosity: Why didn’t they build a bridge?

    • @fuego604
      @fuego604  2 года назад +3

      Totally agree with you in this one ☝️. Bridge was in the original plan but didn’t have the funding at the time. The watershed society had a strong proposal to spend the money they were given by the government before it was taken away so they spent it on the removal instead. There was barely any studies on how the removal of the spit will benefit the salmon population.
      At the moment, when it’s low tide, the section that was removed is expose so no salmon or any fish could swim across making the removal efforts worthless.

      I windsurfed in Wellington for more than a decade and it's amazing. The contrast with Squamish is crazy. There's hundreds of easy and free ways to access the ocean in Wellington. We had only two ways to access the ocean in Squamish: Nexen beach and the spit. Who knows if/when Nexen will be available but you can be sure the parking will be inadequate and expensive. Our only spot to access to the ocean at the moment is the spit which has become very difficult.
      Like everyone else, I'm all for helping the salmon - even if it means removing Spit road. Lets just assume this will help the salmon, despite the DFO research not being made public.
      The windsports users and public as a whole just want access to the ocean. Darrell Bay would be ideal for wingers/windsurfers and even as a desperately needed public boat ramp. Instead, it's unused and the parking lot is slowly falling apart.

    • @fuego604
      @fuego604  2 года назад

      Thanks for the input. This is only a small part of the Documentary. The issue is still evolving and the faith of the SPIT is uncertain. The kiteboarders are powerless at this point but I'm sure there will be a solution "alternative".

    • @fuego604
      @fuego604  2 года назад +1

      Yea, the Squamish Windsport Society is providing boat access to the now SPIT Island.
      They only removed 300 meters of land for now and will be removing another 700meters in the fall.
      The district failed the windsport society by not offering any solutions. The future of the SPIT is still up in the air.
      With how the Spit island is set up, the winter storms will slowly wash away the area if they don’t maintain it.
      Go and kite there while you can. Such an amazing spot

      @@fuego604 so as of September even the island won’t be accessible by boat?! I kited 2 years in Squamish and had to move to Montreal the past 2 years for work, but I’m moving back in September just because of the wind conditions in Squamish. You said it right my dude! I've been kiting there since 2007 and it became part of my life. It's a place where I learn and met older and younger kiters. I hope they come up with a better solution so I can go and kite again. What they are offering as an alternative to getting to the "Spit Island" is a "Boat Service". This is nowhere near as environmentally friendly as the old Rocks and Gravel that made up the old Spit Road.
