5 reasons why Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth is Square's best sequel

Final Fantasy is an anthology series of sorts: narratively speaking, the majority of FF games are standalone experiences with a unique set of locations and characters. There are a handful of recurring elements and themes, but for the most part, each new Final Fantasy saga starts from scratch in a brand new world. And that’s a huge part of the charm.
In this video, our resident JRPG obsessive Alex Donaldson argues that FF7: Rebirth is one of the best Final Fantasy games ever released precisely because it’s building on a strong foundation: 2020’s Remake, certainly, with its incredible combat system and jaw-dropping production design, but also the 1997 original which it so deftly reimagines, and its plethora of spin-offs.

4 reasons that make it not the best:
- No Knights of the Round
- No Bahamut Zero
- No Planet's Weapons
- Confusing and debatible ending

I just finished it and I have a weird taste in my mouth. I think if I didn’t play the original I would have liked it a lot more but I couldn’t help but be irritated a lot. Everytime I saw Zack I literally said “not this s again” out loud. There was just so much annoying about it so I can’t say it’s a good sequel. And that ending would probably confuse new players too much for it to be a good new game either. Hard to rate it, a lot of it was good.

It probably helps that Square have never made a direct sequel to anything that was actually that great. It also helps that FF7 Remake was not that good, with loads of padding and terrible level design, so the only way was up.

It has an 87 (8.4 user average) on metacritic so that means it's actually pretty good even with the padding. 😊

The confidence with which you're so objectively wrong about the game is commendable. Both entries are among the best games of all time ratings wise, among both public and critic reviews.
